Rosemary strode up the stairs of the grand residence, her steps long and steady. Her face glowed, lit up with a happiness she could no longer hide. Clutched tightly in her hand was a white paper bearing the hospital’s letterhead. Her breath came slightly quickened, but the joy swelling in her chest seemed to erase every trace of fatigue.

“Bibi, where is Calvin?” Rosemary asked the middle-aged maid as she walked past the second-floor hallway.

The maid stopped and smiled politely, warmed by the bright aura radiating from her young mistress. “Master Calvin is in his study, Madam.”

“Thank you, Bibi!” Rosemary replied quickly, wasting no more time and hurrying toward the end of the hallway.

Her heart soared. She could not wait to share this extraordinary news with her husband. The doctor’s kind smile from that morning flashed through her mind.

“Madam, you are finally pregnant. After three years of waiting, your baby is growing strong within you,” the doctor had said warmly, handing over the test results.

Back then, Rosemary’s heart had felt ready to burst with joy. “Is it true? What wonderful news, Doctor! I must go home and tell my husband right away!” she’d exclaimed, her eyes shining bright.

Three years of waiting—marked by anxiety, prayers in the quiet hours of the night, and endless efforts—had finally borne fruit. Rosemary pictured how Calvin would pull her into his arms, spin her around in delight, or perhaps even shed tears of happiness upon reading the doctor’s note.

But the moment she reached the study door, left slightly ajar, her steps froze. A voice she knew all too well drifted from within—cold, sharp, and cutting.

“Do you really think I ever truly loved Rosemary? She’s nothing more than a tool to get revenge on her father!”

The words spilled from Calvin’s lips, shattering the silence of the room. Rosemary stood rooted to the spot. The smile vanished from her face in an instant, replaced by a deep, stunned confusion. Her body turned as still as a statue.

Inside, the call blared loudly through the speakerphone. Davian—Calvin’s closest friend—spoke from the other end, his voice trembling with barely contained anger.

“Calvin… are you serious about hurting Rosemary?”

“Absolutely!” Calvin replied, without a flicker of hesitation. His tone dripped with deep, seething hatred. “You know how much I loathe her father. If I can’t destroy his daughter, then my name isn’t Calvin!”

“Calvin, you absolute bastard!” Davian snapped. “You’d hurt Rosemary—your own wife—just to settle a personal grudge against her father?”

“I’ve told you countless times, Davian. It’s all been an act!” Calvin’s cynical laugh rang out, piercing Rosemary’s ears as she stood trembling outside. “If it weren’t for revenge against her family, I never would have deigned to marry her!”

Rosemary’s limbs went suddenly numb. Tears she’d once held back now spilled freely, streaming down cheeks that had turned deathly pale. Unconsciously, she crumpled the paper in her hand.

So it was all just a performance, she thought, her chest throbbing with unbearable pain. The happiness that had filled her heart only moments ago now lay shattered into dust. I was never the woman he loved. All this time… I’ve been living in a delusion.

Meanwhile, the argument inside continued. Davian was furious at his friend’s deception.

“Calvin! You know Rosemary is one of the kindest women alive! If you intend to hurt her, I won’t stand for it!”

Calvin let out a venomous chuckle. “Why? Do you want my ‘ex-wife’ for yourself later, is that it?”

“You’re despicable!” Davian snarled with rage. “You once begged me to back off! You asked me to stay away from her! And now you want to break her heart—all over a blind hatred for her father?”

“Davian… a convincing performance demands total commitment!” Calvin cut in sharply, his voice cold and untouchable. “If I hadn’t pretended to love her so perfectly, how could I have ever lured her into my trap?”

Just then, the maid Rosemary had spoken to earlier passed by again. She spotted her mistress standing motionless before the door, trembling violently.

“Madam? Why don’t you go in?” the maid asked, confused.

Rosemary flinched. She said nothing, only tightened her grip on the paper as she fought the storm of anger and heartbreak raging inside her.

The sound from outside caught Calvin’s attention.

“Enough, Davian. Stay out of my marriage!” Calvin said curtly and ended the call abruptly.

Footsteps approached the door. The heavy mahogany door swung open to reveal Calvin—striking and composed. In a matter of seconds, his cold expression melted into a warm, familiar smile—one that had deceived Rosemary completely for three years.

“Darling, what’s wrong?” he asked gently, stepping closer. “It looks like you have something very important to tell me?”

Rosemary looked back at him with hollow eyes, brimming with deep, raw disappointment. “Calvin… stop. There’s no need to pretend anymore.”

Calvin’s eyebrows lifted slightly. He glanced at the retreating maid, then back at his wife. “Oh? So you heard everything?”

Rosemary let out a bitter, hollow laugh—a sound that spoke of her heart’s total ruin. “Mr. Calvin… I truly can’t believe how brilliantly you’ve acted these past three years.”

Calvin folded his arms, dropping his mask of kindness completely. His eyes were now sharp and icy. “Why do you look so shocked?”

“Not shocked!” Rosemary’s voice shook, but her words were firm. “Not at all. It’s just… I was such a fool to believe in your false love all this time!”

Calvin took a step forward, looking her up and down with not a trace of remorse.

“Rosemary, don’t blame me for any of this,” he said, his tone cold to the bone. “Blame your father. He’s the one who drove mine to his death!”

"Hurry—don’t waste another second!" Rosemary cried, clutching her rounded belly as she half-ran through the sudden drizzle soaking the café courtyard. The burly man held a tall black umbrella over her and opened the passenger door of a silver sedan parked haphazardly at the curb. Ignoring the sudden dizziness and sharp twinge in her side, Rosemary slid in. The engine roared, tires screeching hard on wet asphalt, and the car sped off into the deepening night. Her mind was in chaos. For three months she’d built an impenetrable wall around her heart, convincing herself her love for Calvin was dead—replaced by cold, untouchable hatred. But hearing he lay dying, critically injured while risking his life to protect her family’s documents, that wall of ice cracked wide open."How was he even on that cliff road?!" she asked, voice trembling, staring hard at Davian’s guard driving at breakneck speed."Mr. Calvin learned a former business partner of his father’s planned to blackmail Mr. Wijaya

"Don’t waste time—get in!" The burly man snapped, shoving Calvin roughly until he stumbled into the backseat of the black sedan. The door slammed shut with a deafening crash. Before Calvin could twist around or speak, two more guards on either side clamped cold iron handcuffs around his wrists. The car surged forward, speeding away from the quiet beach road toward the highway.Calvin didn’t fight. The man who once radiated untouchable dominance now sat slumped, surrendering completely. His head and shirt were still damp from the water Rosemary had thrown in his face minutes before. His gaze was empty, staring out the window as coconut trees blurred past. Part of him felt left behind in that little café—with the woman who’d just shattered his pride with truths too painful to bear."Where are you taking me?" he asked, voice thin and ragged, stripped of every trace of his usual command. The driver glanced back. "Mr. Wijaya is waiting at his main residence. The man you nearly destroyed ha

"How dare you set foot here!" Rosemary shrieked, seizing the glass pitcher of cold water from the counter and hurling its contents straight into the face of the man kneeling before her.Ice-cold water drenched Calvin’s face and his once-fine, now-frayed shirt. He did not flinch. He made no move to wipe the water dripping from his nose, nor to defend himself. His red-rimmed eyes, ringed with dark shadows, remained fixed on her—no arrogance, no fury, only bleak, bottomless despair and regret. The soft chime of the café door faded from her ears, drowned out by the thunder of her own heart. Every terrible memory she’d buried deep these past three months surged to the surface, poisoning the sea air that had slowly been healing her."Rosemary… please," he whispered, his voice ragged, nearly lost beneath the crash of waves outside. His whole body trembled violently on the cold wooden floor. "Look at me… please, just listen…""Get out right now before I call the neighbors and have them drag y

"Let go of my hand, Calvin!" Rosemary screamed, yanking her arm with all her strength, trying to break free from his iron grip. The sound of rustling fabric and ragged breathing cut through the night’s silence in the dim room. Calvin stood firm in the darkness, his eyes burning sharp with a tangled mix of rage and despair. His hold on her wrist didn’t loosen—not even a little—only tightened until her pale skin turned red."You never know when to stop, do you, Rosemary!" he hissed, his low voice trembling. "Even after your body nearly gave out, after they just pulled that IV from your hand—you still try to steal my key and run away?!""What did you expect me to do—wait for you to tear me apart piece by piece, you devil?!" she shot back, defiant. Her eyes met his directly, no trace of fear left. "Kill me then! Kill me and this baby if you can’t stand to let us go! Because as long as I draw breath, I’ll keep looking for a way out of this hell!""Enough!" He roared, shoving her hand back

"Hold her head—quick!" Davian snapped, shoving the master bedroom door open with his shoulder and ushering two rushing nurses behind him.The grand room had descended into chaos. Calvin stood frozen at the bedside, chest heaving, staring down at his own cold, trembling hands. On the thick mattress, Rosemary lay rigid as a corpse. Her face, pale as paper, starkly contrasted with her dark hair spilling messily across the pillows.Davian hurried to her side, checking the pulse at her wrist—faint, thready, and erratic. He looked up at Calvin, eyes blazing with unbridled fury."You’ve truly lost your mind, Calvin!" He slapped Calvin’s hand away as it reached for her forehead. "Look at what you’ve done to her! She’s severely dehydrated, burning up with fever—and you still lock her up like an animal?!""I never meant for her to faint!" Calvin cut in, defensive, though his voice shook with undeniable panic. "She tried to sneak out in the middle of night through the garden! I was only restrain

"Come now, Madam—just a little more," the maid whispered, her hand trembling as she held out a spoonful of savory porridge to Rosemary’s pale lips.Rosemary didn’t resist. She opened her mouth slowly, chewing and swallowing in silence. Her eyes no longer held the wild panic or hysterical screams of two days prior. A strange calm radiated from her—a calm of surrender, carefully crafted as a mask. Deep down, every spoonful she swallowed was not submission to Calvin, but fuel. She needed strength. She had to gather every last scrap of it if she wanted to get out of this hell alive. In the corner of the room, two burly guards watched her every move with rigid attention. Seeing the mistress of the house now cooperating, finishing half her meal, the tension on their faces slowly loosened. Reports were sent to Calvin: Rosemary was finally learning her place, choosing to yield. But obedience was only an illusion.Night deepened, wrapping Calvin’s grand estate in darkness and a suffocating sil
