Elena slammed the tent flap behind her and burst into the dusty twilight. Tears stung her eyes, hot and relentless. She pressed a hand to her mouth as sobs shook her shoulders. The air was cool, but she felt burned from the inside.

She stumbled toward the edge of camp, digging her phone from a pocket. Hands shaking, she typed a quick message to Lucas:

I need you. Urgent. Please come get me.

She hit send and sank onto a wooden crate, head bowed. Minutes passed like hours. The camp lanterns flickered. A helicopter droned in the distance. But there was no reply.

Elena swallowed her fear and rose. She needed to move. With one final glance at the tents where Liam and Aurora worked together, she slipped into the darkening road beyond the perimeter.

She walked with purpose, phone in hand, waiting for Lucas’s pickup. She had called him so many times over the years—he was her anchor, her laughter, her safe place. Tonight she needed him more than ever.

Chapter 57Elena sat on her bunk late that evening, scrolling through her phone under the soft glow of a single lantern. The camp had gone quiet after curfew—only distant generators droned, and the olive trees whispered in the cool night breeze. She had hoped to sleep. Instead, she found herself reading a fresh round of gossip.“Sergeant Blackwood still refuses to see Miss Rossi off-duty.”“Liam’s heart belongs to someone else—rumor says a Florence nurse.”“Commander’s daughter is moping around; maybe it’s that Blackwood’s fault!”Elena’s chest tightened with each line. She shut her eyes and let out a soft breath. She had come here seeking purpose, a challenge, and perhaps—just perhaps—a connection with someone who understood the calling that drew her. Liam had been kind, professional, even protective. She had hoped there would be something more. But these rumors stung. She shoved her phone aside and climbed down from the bunk. She needed answers—and maybe one last chance. She stepped

Liam spent the next morning on edge. He arrived early at the helipad, already dressed in his flight suit, heart pounding before the first light glimmered on the rotors. He scanned the tents where Aurora and Elena worked. Aurora was nowhere to be seen—she was on rounds, he had been told—but Elena stood beside the medevac truck, helmet in hand, as if waiting just for him.He squared his shoulders and approached the chopper. “Lieutenant,” he said, voice curt. She lifted her gaze and offered a crisp salute. Her green eyes held something more—warmth? Hope? He couldn’t tell. He swallowed and returned her salute.“Sergeant,” she replied. “Thank you for the briefing yesterday.”He nodded. He had no intention of encouraging small talk. He wanted to keep this strictly professional.Elena tossed her helmet onto the truck’s hood. “I improved the drill plan. I moved the evac routes closer to the tents. I thought it might save time.”Liam looked at her, torn between admiration and caution. She was

Chapter 56Aurora was finishing her afternoon rounds when Captain Rossi called her over. He stood by the edge of the command tent, arms folded, eyes bright with an unusual mixture of pride and nerves.“Miss Calloway,” he said, voice low but firm. “I’d like you to meet someone.”Aurora wiped her hands on her scrub pants and stepped forward. Rossi gestured toward a sleek transport vehicle that had just rolled into the camp. Its side door opened, and a young woman in pilot’s fatigues climbed out.Aurora’s breath caught. The woman was tall and lithe, with sunlit hair pulled into a neat braid. Her uniform fit perfectly. Her eyes were a clear green, curious and confident. Around her neck she wore the same style of dog tag Aurora did. In an instant Aurora recognized a kindred spirit.“This is First Lieutenant Elena Rossi,” the captain announced. “My daughter. She just graduated from flight school and requested an assignment here. Elena, this is Nurse Calloway.”Lieutenant Rossi smiled polite

Chapter 55The morning sun was pale and gentle as Aurora stepped out of the field hospital tent. Birds chirped faintly in the olive groves beyond the camp. For the first time, she felt a moment of calm.Liam was already waiting by the truck, leaning against the side with two cups of steaming coffee in hand. He spotted her and his face broke into a bright smile.Aurora returned the smile shyly. She smoothed her scrub top and took the cup from him. The warmth seeped into her fingers and heart.“Good morning,” he said softly.“Good morning,” she replied. The words tasted sweet and new. They walked together toward the grove of olive trees at the far edge of the camp. The morning air was cool and carried the scent of damp earth and wild rosemary. They found a fallen log like the day they first talked here. Liam set his cup on a flat stone. Aurora sat and he settled beside her. Their shoulders touched, a small spark of comfort.“I thought since we survived yesterday I owe you breakfast,” Li

Part 2The night pressed in around Aurora and Liam as they sat by the riverbank. Moonlight danced on the rippling water and painted pale silver patterns on the ground. The camp lights behind them faded softly into the distance. For a while their only company was the steady whisper of the stream.Liam shifted on the log and offered Aurora a small smile. Tea in hand she felt its warmth seep into her fingers and her chest as well. She drew her knees closer, letting the silence wrap around them. After the day’s chaos and the long night of paperwork, it felt like a gift to simply breathe. She looked up at him and spoke quietly. “I never imagined reuniting like this.”He turned his head to watch the water. “Neither did I,” he admitted. “But I’m glad we have this moment.”Aurora touched the silver dog tag at her chest. It felt cool against her skin. She remembered her father’s steady voice and warm laugh. She closed her eyes and exhaled. When she opened them again, she met Liam’s compassiona

Aurora stepped off the transport truck and blinked in the harsh midday sun. The field hospital tents lay stretching across a dusty clearing. Everywhere she looked, she saw reminders of why she had come. She tightened her scrub top and squared her shoulders. Today was different. No uniforms of Florence. No boutiques. No rumors. Today was about this moment. She spotted Liam across the courtyard, unloading medical supplies from a box truck. His flight jacket hung over one arm. His dark hair was hidden under a cap, but she recognized his gait. That easy confidence. Her heart fluttered. She told herself it was just relief. Friend relief. No sparks. No past. Just catching up.Liam looked up. His gaze found her instantly. The world seemed to hush around them. His lips curved in a small, surprised smile. He stepped closer.“Aurora,” he said softly. “You made it.”She nodded, voice tight. “I did.”He offered a salute, playful. She returned it.They stood between rows of stretchers and tents. D

Chapter 53Aurora’s first morning in the field began before the sun rose. The air was cold and damp, heavy with anticipation. She slipped into her gear—steel-toed boots, olive drab scrub top, protective vest—and zipped the pockets tight. Her heart pounded like a drum. Every breath reminded her why she was here: to honor her father’s legacy, to help where it mattered most.As she stepped off the transport truck, she saw the makeshift hospital tents lined up against the hillside. Medics in white and red cross armbands bustled around. The world she had known in Florence—boutiques, wine, gossip—felt like a dream. This was real: scent of antiseptic and dust, the moan of distant helicopters, the urgent shouts of staff. Her team commander, Captain Rossi, a veteran with kind eyes and lined face, greeted her. “Welcome, Nurse Calloway,” he said firmly. “Ready for orientation?”Aurora swallowed. “Yes, sir.”He nodded and led her inside the largest tent, where plastic cots lined the canvas walls.

Chapter 55Aurora returned to the boutique the next morning with a calm determination. The sun was bright, but her mood was steady—cordial purpose replacing the fear that had driven her for so long. Behind her, the boutique’s gold-plated sign glinted mockingly, but Aurora no longer saw it as a symbol of her mother’s control. It was simply a building. A shop. Nothing more.Inside, Madame Blackwood was already at her desk, tapping away on her phone. She looked up at Aurora’s entrance, eyebrows rising in faint surprise. “Back early, darling. I expected you at the gala dress fitting.”Aurora closed the door gently behind her and walked forward, her uniform plain against the boutique’s lavish surroundings. “I won’t be attending, Mother.”Madame Blackwood’s fingers froze on the keys. She lowered her phone and studied her daughter. “You won’t be attending? But the entire Milan fashion circle will be there. It’s a crucial networking event.” Her tone was measured, polite, but Aurora sensed the
