Elara's POV

“I know that the baby bump was fake.”

The moment my mother said those words, I couldn't move. I couldn't even spun around to look at her. My grip grew weaker around the bag and it hit the floor with a loud thud. My body was trembling as I wished.... that the ground could just open up and swallow me alive.

Mother knows. She knows I have been deceiving her since I came in today. How? I looked down on the baby bump. Was it so noticeable? But it looked real to me.

"But it's fine," she said again. "I understand the reason why you had to do it. And I'm grateful that you did it. Concerning your father's condition today, it would have worsened if I asked you about the baby in his presence and you told me you lost it."

Squeezing my eyes closed, I bit down on my lower lips trying to steady the storm brewing inside me. Then I forced myself to look back at her. She was already standing, forcing a smile that did not reach her eyes.

"How...." I muttered. "How did you know about this?"
