Se connecterVivienne calls that evening, and her voice is apologetic.āIām so sorry,ā she says. āI didnāt think weād get photographed. I shouldāve thought it through.āāItās fine,ā I tell her, touched she even bothered calling. āDid your family give you trouble over it?ā I ask, because I remember what she said about her father.āA little. My father had things to say. Iāll be fine though, donāt worry,ā she says with a short laugh. āIāll come see you this weekend. Somewhere no oneās going to photograph us, I promise.āMy insides warm at her words. āIād love that,ā I say, and I mean it.āVivienne keeps her word. She shows up unexpectedly on Saturday around noon. Iām sprawled on my bed when I hear her bright voice coming up the stairs. It makes me smile and I go to see her, radiating a childlike energy I havenāt had in forever.I guess deep down, my loneliness had been weighing on me for a long time.āGuess who!ā she yells the moment she sees me.āSanta Claus?āāUgh, don't be funny. I brought food!
I find him in his study, his door left half open like he isn't expecting company but couldn't be bothered to close it either. He's leaned back over his chair, legs crossed gracefully. His glasses are perched low over his nose and his eyes skim through a document with such steady focus, he doesn't even look up when I step inside."Mr Cross?" I call. Silence. He doesn't acknowledge me.I swallow down my irritation. "Why didn't you tell Vivienne I refused to end the pregnancy?ā I ask, standing stiffly by the doorway. āWhy didn't you tell her you wanted to, in the first place?""Why would I?" He says it without lifting his eyes from the paper, and it sounds like the question barely registers as one worth answering. "It's not her business how we settled that."I don't answer right away. I just fold my arms over my chest, waiting for him to say something more.He doesn't.That silence is what finally gets under my skin. "So what did you tell her then? You let her think this is something t
Lucien doesn't say anything when I tell him about dinner with Vivienne. He just looks at me for a beat too long, like he's teetering on the edge of saying something, and then decides against it.He leaves the room, and I'm left standing there wondering if his silence was a yes or a warning.Mrs Greene is in the next room folding towels when I go to meet her."Why is Lucien always so⦠brooding?"She doesn't look up. "Hm? What do you mean?" she asks."I don't know how to explain it. He never tells you not to do things. He just watches to see if you will anyway. And the result determines how he reacts.""Well, Lucien has never been one to talk too much. He likes to observe.""Is that supposed to make me feel better?""It's supposed to be honest," she says with a shrug and continues her folding.I sigh and drop onto the bed.The day of the lunch, I dig through my closet for something that isn't a maternity shirt or the leggings I've basically been living in for the past few days.I find a
I hear her before I even see her ā a voice so feminine and bright it cuts through the quiet halls in a way nothing ever does in this house.I set my book down and move toward the sound, drawn by my curiosity more than sense, until I'm standing at the top of the stairs looking down into the entryway below.A girl stands there, her dark hair falling in loose waves past her shoulders. She's beautiful and unmistakably Lucien's sister.Mrs Greene hovers near her, trying to take her coat, murmuring something about her having to wait."I'm busy, Maw. And he's my brother. What could keep him so occupied?" The girl waves her off, already scanning around the room. "Where is he? Tell him Vivienne's here. He's been dodging my calls for a week."She catches sight of me then, and jumps, like she's just seen a ghost. Then her posture tightens as her gaze slowly travels up from my feet to my face."What is that?" she asks, tilting her head, amusement curling at the corner of her mouth. "A mountain?"
The first days are quiet. It's not the peaceful kind of quiet, it's more like two people circling each other in a house too big to force a collision. And Lucien is hardly ever at home. When he is, he disappears into his study for hours on end. We hardly ever see each other at all.By the end of the first week, I can count the total number of words we've exchanged on one hand."Hope you feel fine," he asks once as he passes me in the hallway, not quite meeting my eyes."Yes," I answer.A nod and that's it. That's the whole of it.And honestly, I think I prefer it that way. My days find their own rhythm regardless of him.The nurses still come for my checkups and I'm still fed on time. But beyond that, the house offers more than I expect. There's a massive garden in the back, wild and green and fragrant, and a library that stretches an entire wing in the house, with shelves reaching the ceiling. The books there are a diversity of genres, some new and untouched, some yellow from age and
"I'm not going to your place," I stand up fast and move away before he subdues me with his scent. Then I cross my arms protectively over my chest.āYou donāt really have a choice, Evelyn.āāStop calling me that! Ms Lily is fine. And my insignificant self doesn't deserve to be in your mighty present, just in case you forgot.āHe stares at me for a moment, then chuckles. "Donāt get me wrong, this isn't about you. I don't care about your safety, Ms Lily." he says, venom threading his words. "But it's my child you're carrying.""A child you don't even want," I shoot at him, sharp enough to cut."Then get rid of it,ā He says, as he steps closer. "End it so we can all put this mess behind us. Isn't that what you want too, at this point? What do you want? Money? A better life? Iāll give it to you.""I don't have to do anything you say," I say, forcing my gaze to stay on his even as they crack under the weight of his words. āIt's Ce
