Chapter 1

"The math tournament has three different sections and will take place over three days," the homeroom teacher, Daniel Potts, explained. "Each section's scores will be tallied on the same day. I urge all participants to prepare accordingly."

My eyes widened at Mr. Potts' words.

Math tournament? Could he be talking about the same math tournament that eventually tore my family apart?

Didn't I already live through that nightmare?

Only when I looked at the date on the screen did I realize that I had been reborn.

I had been sent back to the day before the math tournament, which meant that I had a chance to change my tragic fate.

Before I was able to snap back to my senses, Alyssa Ford's grating voice sounded in my ears, taking on a provocative edge. "Stop daydreaming, Clara Toland. A country bumpkin from the sticks like you will never surpass me no matter how hard you try.

"I'm going to score 20 more points than you in each section of the tournament. You're destined to be trampled under my feet. The champion of the math tournament can only be me. Just wait and see if you don't believe me."

I shuddered violently as sweat drenched the back of my shirt.

Alyssa was childhood friends with my boyfriend, Glen Redfield. She held a grudge against me because she believed I stole him from her, and she would cause trouble for me every now and then. She even specifically asked Mr. Potts to change her seat, so that she could sit between Glen and me.

In my past life, Alyssa always scored 20 more points than me no matter which competition we participated in.

I refused to back down in the face of her blatant provocations. I was a math genius, after all. I knew that as long as I performed like I always did, it would be impossible for her to beat me.

I didn't expect her to actually score 20 more points than me after the scores of the first day were tallied.

Alyssa just jutted her chin out and looked down at me, sneering, "I told you I would score 20 more points than you even in this math tournament. You're going to have a hard time if you refuse to accept the truth."

I was shocked, but I refused to believe that Alyssa could somehow predict the future since the tournament was conducted in a fair manner. Thus, I convinced myself that perhaps she had secretly studied as hard as she could during the time leading up to the tournament.

I dedicated all my attention to the tournament the next day, clearing my mind of all other thoughts except for the questions.

However, reality dealt a harsh blow to me when the scores were revealed that afternoon.

Alyssa had once again scored exactly 20 more points than me—no more and no less. She sighed and said, "I already gave you a reminder, but you insisted on being stubborn until the very end.

"I heard that you desperately need the reward money to pay your parents' medical bills. Why don't you beg me? Perhaps I might feel generous enough to spare a dollar or two for you."

I couldn't deny that I felt a little hopeless at that moment.

However, for the sake of paying Mom's and Dad's medical bills, I still had to do the best that I could.

The questions on the third day of the math tournament were significantly more difficult than the first two days, but I was still able to perform as I always did.

I was convinced that I would be able to make up the 40-point difference between Alyssa and me and turn the tide.

I had a complete mental breakdown when I saw Alyssa's and my scores for the third day.

Alyssa had still scored exactly 20 more points than me.

Since I had failed to become the champion of the math tournament, naturally, I also failed to obtain the prize money that the school had promised me beforehand.

Mom and Dad ended up passing away from cancer because I couldn't afford to pay for their surgeries.

Alyssa's mocking voice echoed in my ears.

"I already told you that I'll definitely score 20 more points than you in every competition. You're the one who refused to believe me and pinned all your hopes on the prize money. You're the only one to blame for your parents' deaths, Clara!"

Her words haunted me like a curse.

In the end, I caved under the immense pressure and ended my own life.

Even as I took my last breath, I still couldn't figure out how Alyssa managed to score 20 more points than me no matter how hard I tried during the math tournament.

Now that I had been given another chance at life, I was determined to find out the truth.

I shoved Alyssa, causing her to stumble to the ground. I said mockingly, "I guess your system malfunctioned."The color drained from Alyssa's face when I mentioned "the system"."You… You know about the system?""I'm not stupid. Did you really think that I would fall for your lies? That you somehow had such precise control over the scores that you could score exactly 20 more points than me every time?"Besides, I had lived two different lives.Alyssa scoffed and quickly regained her composure. "So what if I don't have the system anymore? So what if I only scored a little over 300 points? My family is rich. I can attend any of the universities abroad. "But what about you? You scored zero points. Do you believe that you can sell your body for the rest of your life with your looks, Clara?"I nodded with a laugh. "You're right. Selling one's body suits you more than me. I've never prostituted myself."I pulled out an acceptance letter from my bag and whirled around to face the cro

The school organized a centralized score-checking session on the day the SAT scores were released.Alyssa had brought her parents along with her.Alyssa's father, Mr. Ford, got up on stage and gave a speech before the scores were released."My daughter has always been a genius. At first, I planned to send her to a university abroad, but she insisted that she wanted to enroll in Franvale University. My guess is that she'll score at least 1,500 points on her SATs."Thunderous applause erupted from the crowd when Mr. Ford finished his speech. Both students and parents tripped over themselves to curry favor with him."Alyssa will definitely be the provincial top scorer this time. She already won first place in so many competitions.""You're right. Her father is such an outstanding man. It only makes sense that he would have such a brilliant daughter.""I'm so jealous. Not only is she rich and pretty, but her grades are excellent too. She's got such a bright future ahead of her!"Al

The champion of the math tournament had been guaranteed a spot in Franvale University.Although Alyssa didn't win the tournament, she was still in high spirits. She was happy as long as I wasn't the champion."You have to work hard, Clara. After losing the math tournament, the only opportunity you have left to change your fate is the SATs."She didn't give me a chance to respond. She just stared at me with wide eyes before exclaiming in faux surprise, "Don't tell me that you're going to submit a blank paper again?"I scoffed as I lifted my head, saying, "Getting accepted into Franvale University isn't a problem for me based on my actual results. But what about you? I'm afraid that just getting accepted into a regular undergraduate course will be a tall order for you, considering your dismal capabilities.""You truly are an idiot, Clara," Alyssa retorted with a sneer. "I already told you that I can trample you under my feet for the rest of my life because of those 20 points. You'll

I leaped to my feet in anger, shouting, "Do you have some loose screws in your head, Glen Redfield?"Glen was clearly shocked by my response. After all, I had never raised my voice at him before.Unfortunately for him, I had already made up my mind. I needed to stay as far away as I could from a bastard like him. It was just that I had been so caught up with other things this time around that I hadn't found the time to deal with him yet.Glen's eyes reddened. "You and I have nothing to do with each other from this day on, Clara," he spat. "A filthy woman like you doesn't deserve to be with me."I slammed my palms on the table. "What are you talking about? Why are you calling me filthy?"Glen scoffed, his eyes shining with disdain. "Drop the act. Everyone knows that your parents' medical bills cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Where did you get the money from?"I glanced at Alyssa, knowing that only she was capable of finding out about this so quickly."It's impossible for

"Alyssa Ford (20 points)."I was utterly flabbergasted. Why did Alyssa score exactly 20 more points than me even when I submitted a blank paper?Alyssa suddenly yanked my arm, causing me to topple forward uncontrollably. She dragged me to the restroom and began interrogating me with a crazed look in her eyes."Have you lost your mind, Clara? Why did you submit a blank paper?"I scoffed and freed myself from her grasp."Why are you getting so worked up when I'm the one who submitted a blank paper? You're the one who said that you'd score 20 more points than me no matter what happens. I didn't know you were that stupid. You actually just scored exactly 20 more points than me."I pressed closer to her and continued, "What I really want to know, Alyssa, is what underhanded methods you've been using."An uneasy look flickered across Alyssa's face. She lifted her head to glare at me. "So what if I'm not the champion of the math tournament? My family has power and authority. I can sti
