Chapter 2

Autor: Perfect Timing
Alyssa's horrible words continued to echo in my ears.

I did everything that I could to force myself to calm down even as scenes from my past life flashed through my mind.

I couldn't figure out what went wrong.

Suddenly, an idea pushed itself to the forefront of my thoughts.

In my past life, Alyssa sat behind me and to my right during the math tournament. It would have been as easy as breathing for her to peek at my exam paper from that position.

Although the math tournament examiners were incredibly strict, Alyssa had plenty of tricks up her sleeve. She must have found a way to copy my answers and intentionally planned it so she would score 20 more points than me. Her goal must have been to break me mentally all along.

I convinced myself that my hypothesis was right.

I leaped to my feet and ran to the office.

"I want to change my seat in the exam hall during the tournament, Mr. Potts!"

I was a math genius, but I was born to an extremely poor family. Everyone in my grade found out about my tragic backstory a long time ago.

I explained to Mr. Potts that I wanted to change seats for good luck. I wanted to maximize my chances of becoming the champion of the math tournament, so that I could use the prize money to pay Mom's and Dad's medical bills.

Mr. Potts immediately sought out the vice principal and successfully convinced him to change my seat to the first row of the exam hall.

Alyssa's seat was in the second-to-last row. There was no way that she could peek at my paper anymore considering the vast distance that separated us.

The next day, I arrived at the exam hall bright and early in the morning.

I breathed a sigh of relief when I confirmed that Alyssa's and my seats were far apart.

A few moments later, Alyssa entered the hall. She strode over to me and hissed, "You really are so stubborn, Clara. Well, we'll get our results once the exams are over. You'll be able to witness with your own two eyes that I scored 20 more points than you."

I gritted my teeth and suppressed my rising emotions as I watched Alyssa haughtily saunter away. I was sure that she wouldn't be able to copy my answers anymore since we were so far apart from each other. There was no way she could possibly do it unless she had some kind of enhanced vision.

Since I had already taken the exam in my past life, I still had 30 minutes to spare after I finished answering all the questions.

When the exam was over, I had lunch before returning to the exam hall.

A collective groan erupted from the crowd of students.

"I'm positive that this year's questions are the toughest in the history of this math tournament. I couldn't even solve the first part of most of the questions near the end of the paper."

"Me too. I couldn't understand the questions at all."

"I bet only a math genius like Clara can solve all the questions."

Alyssa scoffed. "You think quite highly of her, don't you? Don't make me laugh. I can easily score 20 more points than her!"

I halted my footsteps upon hearing Alyssa's words.

She was still so fixated on those 20 points!

However, it was simply impossible for her to score 20 more points than me this time since our seats were so far apart. There was no way she could have copied my answers.

Not only was the security in the exam hall very tight, but we were separated by a huge distance. It was impossible for her to peek at my paper.

I was still lost in my thoughts when Mr. Potts strode over to my side, holding the results. His eyes shone with sympathy when he looked at me.

An ominous feeling began to fester in my heart.

I snatched the results from him with quivering hands.

"First place: Alyssa Ford (92 points)."

"Second place: Clara Toland (72 points)."

My head felt numb. I felt as if I had been plunged into a pool of freezing water, a wave of hopelessness crashing over me.

Alyssa had scored 20 more points than me again.

What on earth was going on?

I shoved Alyssa, causing her to stumble to the ground. I said mockingly, "I guess your system malfunctioned."The color drained from Alyssa's face when I mentioned "the system"."You… You know about the system?""I'm not stupid. Did you really think that I would fall for your lies? That you somehow had such precise control over the scores that you could score exactly 20 more points than me every time?"Besides, I had lived two different lives.Alyssa scoffed and quickly regained her composure. "So what if I don't have the system anymore? So what if I only scored a little over 300 points? My family is rich. I can attend any of the universities abroad. "But what about you? You scored zero points. Do you believe that you can sell your body for the rest of your life with your looks, Clara?"I nodded with a laugh. "You're right. Selling one's body suits you more than me. I've never prostituted myself."I pulled out an acceptance letter from my bag and whirled around to face the cro

The school organized a centralized score-checking session on the day the SAT scores were released.Alyssa had brought her parents along with her.Alyssa's father, Mr. Ford, got up on stage and gave a speech before the scores were released."My daughter has always been a genius. At first, I planned to send her to a university abroad, but she insisted that she wanted to enroll in Franvale University. My guess is that she'll score at least 1,500 points on her SATs."Thunderous applause erupted from the crowd when Mr. Ford finished his speech. Both students and parents tripped over themselves to curry favor with him."Alyssa will definitely be the provincial top scorer this time. She already won first place in so many competitions.""You're right. Her father is such an outstanding man. It only makes sense that he would have such a brilliant daughter.""I'm so jealous. Not only is she rich and pretty, but her grades are excellent too. She's got such a bright future ahead of her!"Al

The champion of the math tournament had been guaranteed a spot in Franvale University.Although Alyssa didn't win the tournament, she was still in high spirits. She was happy as long as I wasn't the champion."You have to work hard, Clara. After losing the math tournament, the only opportunity you have left to change your fate is the SATs."She didn't give me a chance to respond. She just stared at me with wide eyes before exclaiming in faux surprise, "Don't tell me that you're going to submit a blank paper again?"I scoffed as I lifted my head, saying, "Getting accepted into Franvale University isn't a problem for me based on my actual results. But what about you? I'm afraid that just getting accepted into a regular undergraduate course will be a tall order for you, considering your dismal capabilities.""You truly are an idiot, Clara," Alyssa retorted with a sneer. "I already told you that I can trample you under my feet for the rest of my life because of those 20 points. You'll

I leaped to my feet in anger, shouting, "Do you have some loose screws in your head, Glen Redfield?"Glen was clearly shocked by my response. After all, I had never raised my voice at him before.Unfortunately for him, I had already made up my mind. I needed to stay as far away as I could from a bastard like him. It was just that I had been so caught up with other things this time around that I hadn't found the time to deal with him yet.Glen's eyes reddened. "You and I have nothing to do with each other from this day on, Clara," he spat. "A filthy woman like you doesn't deserve to be with me."I slammed my palms on the table. "What are you talking about? Why are you calling me filthy?"Glen scoffed, his eyes shining with disdain. "Drop the act. Everyone knows that your parents' medical bills cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Where did you get the money from?"I glanced at Alyssa, knowing that only she was capable of finding out about this so quickly."It's impossible for

"Alyssa Ford (20 points)."I was utterly flabbergasted. Why did Alyssa score exactly 20 more points than me even when I submitted a blank paper?Alyssa suddenly yanked my arm, causing me to topple forward uncontrollably. She dragged me to the restroom and began interrogating me with a crazed look in her eyes."Have you lost your mind, Clara? Why did you submit a blank paper?"I scoffed and freed myself from her grasp."Why are you getting so worked up when I'm the one who submitted a blank paper? You're the one who said that you'd score 20 more points than me no matter what happens. I didn't know you were that stupid. You actually just scored exactly 20 more points than me."I pressed closer to her and continued, "What I really want to know, Alyssa, is what underhanded methods you've been using."An uneasy look flickered across Alyssa's face. She lifted her head to glare at me. "So what if I'm not the champion of the math tournament? My family has power and authority. I can sti
