Chapter 3

Author: Helianthus
The next day, I received a text from Sophie when I woke up. "I ordered breakfast for you. Don't forget to eat it."

She casually glossed over the fact that she'd left me alone in the car last night, trying to sweep it under the rug with a single breakfast order. If I brought it up again, it would look like I was deliberately starting a fight.

Two minutes later, Zachary posted another update on social media. In the photo, Sophie sat across from him, cooling down his soup for him. The table was covered with a lavish breakfast spread.

I liked the post, and not long after, her angry voice message came through. "Zachary has a sensitive stomach. I'm like his older sister, so I'm just making sure he eats breakfast properly. What's the problem?

"He never had anything good to eat growing up. I'm just making up for the care he missed out on. Don't tell me you're going to make an issue out of this!"

Just a single "like" was enough to set Sophie off like this. I couldn't tell if she was angry or just feeling guilty.

My phone buzzed with a reminder just then. Today was the day Sophie and I were supposed to try on our wedding attire. I calmly dismissed the notification and deleted all the wedding-related reminders along with it.

When I stepped out of my room, I found the breakfast Sophie claimed to have ordered for me sitting alone in the corner outside my door. It was a serving of extra spicy chili con carne that had already gone cold.

Sophie must have completely forgotten that I had a severe stomach ulcer. Even mildly spicy food would leave me doubled over in pain and drenched in sweat, let alone something extra spicy.

At noon, Sophie came home for once. The moment she walked in, she couldn't help but demand, "Today was supposed to be our wedding fitting. Why didn't you remind me? Don't you know how hard it is to book an appointment at that bridal shop?"

She needed me to remind her about our wedding fitting, yet she'd never once missed any of Zachary's basketball games.

Sophie slammed her bag down on the table, as if trying to intimidate me. Then, she noticed the untouched chili con carne still sitting on the table. Sophie let out a cold laugh, her expression suggesting she'd figured everything out.

"You did this on purpose, didn't you? Just because I didn't eat breakfast with you, you're throwing a tantrum. Ethan, you're a grown man. Can you stop being so dramatic?"

I said flatly, "I can't eat spicy food. Did you forget?"

A flicker of confusion crossed Sophie's face before it went pale. She hadn't completely forgotten, after all.

Sophie's family company was in the construction industry. Three years ago, when raw material prices skyrocketed, she begged me to help her connect with a supplier who offered fair prices.

But on the day of the business dinner, Sophie suddenly stood the supplier up just to rush off and watch Zachary's basketball game. The supplier, Joseph Stone, was furious. And afterward, Sophie called me in tears, begging for my help.

I swallowed my pride and arranged another dinner meeting for her. Joseph gave Sophie a cold smile and asked, "So, am I important enough now that Ms. Bennett actually shows up?"

Sophie quickly grabbed my arm with an apologetic smile. "If it wasn't out of respect for you, do you think I'd bring my boyfriend along?"

She kept giving me looks to drink on her behalf and apologize, clutching at my sleeve pitifully. That night, Joseph saw our sincerity and left satisfied.

But I spent the night hugging the toilet, vomiting until my stomach went into spasms. I ended up in the emergency room with permanent damage to my stomach.

To avoid making Sophie feel guilty, I always forced myself to hide the pain whenever my condition flared up. I never expected that would make her think I was truly invincible.

I heard that after everything that had happened, Sophie tried to reach me. She'd deluded herself into thinking I'd help her solve her problems.Unfortunately for Sophie, before she could contact me, Zachary caught wind of what she was up to.He caused another huge scene, throwing Sophie's life into chaos once again. She'd probably be too busy dealing with her own mess for years to come, let alone getting the chance to contact me.During those two months, I poured all my attention into the company and Victoria's coffeehouse project. The wound Sophie had left in my heart was gradually healing. Not only that, ever since I'd praised Victoria's medicinal cooking, she'd been coming to the office every few days to bring me meals. Victoria always had a legitimate reason, whether it was to thank me for my help or because of our old friendship. I couldn't bring myself to refuse.Of course, I was glad I hadn't refused her kindness. Thanks to Victoria's cooking, my stomach problems flared up

I thought after rejecting Sophie, she'd at least leave me alone for a while. But the next day, when I left my house, I found her crouched in front of my door, soaking wet from head to toe.Her lips had turned somewhat pale from the cold, and she was trembling slightly. But when she saw me, Sophie still forced herself to stand up and shakily pulled a ring from inside her coat. It was the same one I'd thrown away yesterday."Ethan, I found the ring. Can't we just go back to how things were? Nothing has to change. I still love you."I frowned. Faced with such a pitiful Sophie, I couldn't bring myself to say anything too harsh, but my heart truly felt nothing anymore.I went back inside to get her a blanket and said calmly, "I won't say anything cruel. Just go."Sophie stared at me blankly. Within two seconds, tears began rolling down her face.I moved to close the door, but Sophie lunged forward and grabbed my pant leg, screaming desperately, "Ethan, you can't be this cold to me! Yo

I sighed helplessly and said to Sophie in a low voice, "Sophie, love is supposed to be mutual. Do I really need to remind you how you've been treating me? Let go.""No..." Sophie shook her head over and over, trembling as she pulled something from her pocket. "This is the wedding ring we got for the ceremony. Ethan, let me put it on you. I'm proposing to you right now. Please don't give up on me, okay?""Keep the ring. Just stop bothering me."I pushed Sophie's hand away again, but she spread her arms and blocked my path, stubbornly saying, "This is your wedding ring. You can't just refuse it!""Fine, then hand it over." I held out my hand to her.Joy flashed in Sophie's eyes as she quickly placed the ring in my palm. But the next second, her smile froze completely. The moment I took the ring, I threw it into the artificial lake nearby without hesitation. "There. I'm done with it. Sophie, that's my answer. Don't ever harass me again."This time, Sophie didn't try to stop me. She

On the day of our scheduled meeting, Victoria arrived at the company early to wait for me. She'd brought a thick stack of documents, clearly well-prepared.During our discussion, Victoria quickly grasped all my ideas. I could tell she'd put in serious work behind the scenes. We got so absorbed in our conversation that by lunchtime, she still looked eager to keep going.I smiled and closed the documents in front of her. "Come on, let's eat first. We need fuel if we're going to keep working."Victoria lowered her head somewhat sheepishly. "Sorry, I lose track of time when I get into something."But she quickly looked up and smiled at me. "To make up for it, lunch is on me."After we sat down at the restaurant, I kept feeling like someone was watching me from behind.Victoria handed me the menu. When I tried to refuse, she insisted, so I simply moved to sit beside her so we could look at it together. At that moment, a glass of ice-cold water came flying at me without warning. I cou

I arranged to meet Mark Cooper for dinner. Mark was the one who'd sent me that video of Sophie and Zachary at the bar. He'd been my roommate and close friend throughout our four years of college. After he sent me that video, he'd also hinted that I should watch out for the people around me. I never expected that in just a few short days, the people around me would change so drastically.Since all this happened, I hadn't had the chance to see Mark face-to-face to thank him. When he received my dinner invitation, he laughed and said I was being too formal. He then changed the meeting location to a newly opened coffeehouse."See? I told you this place was nice. The style is elegant." Mark gestured around us and winked at me. "Plus, it's owned by an old friend of ours."I could tell Mark was trying hard to find topics to lighten the mood, and I couldn't help but smile. "I'm really fine. It's just a canceled wedding. It doesn't affect me that much."In truth, Sophie had broken my heart

The three-day deadline I'd set had arrived, but there was still no response from Zachary. I went directly to the apartment with property management and, as expected, found a freshly awakened and confused-looking Zachary.Property management immediately started throwing all of Zachary's belongings out, then pushed the disheveled man out of my home.Zachary was wearing nothing but a pair of shorts. His face flushed red as he looked at all the neighbors who'd gathered to watch. He pointed at me and shouted, "Ethan, don't go too far! I've already told Sophie. She's coming right now to teach you a lesson!"I impatiently held out my hand in front of Zachary. "Where's the rent money? Don't tell me you didn't prepare it. I already gave you three days. If you don't pay, I'll have to call the police."Zachary was furious, his fake obedient act completely gone. He spat on the ground viciously. "Screw you! Sophie begged me to move in here. If you want money, go find her. Stop trying to shake
