Ayana leaned back into her chair, her eyes growing distant. The silence between us thickened, only interrupted by the soft whirring of a ceiling fan overhead.

My fingers fidgeted against my thigh as I waited for her response.

Finally, she exhaled, low and drawn.

“It’s rare,” she said softly, her eyes fixed on mine. “Very rare. One in a million, perhaps. But yes….. there are times when two fated mates cannot break the bond unless one of them dies.”

My heart stilled for a second.
