LOGINCHAPTER FIVE
Julian came in with Lila as usual. They were bickering like a young couple in love when they walked in.
“Why are you staring at me like that?” Julian asked.
She replied, “I’m trying to figure out why you stole my fries.”
He frowned. “Your fries? You ordered extra. That’s relationship fries.”
“Relationship fries are supposed to be offered, not kidnapped,” Lila said, smiling sheepishly.
“I was protecting you. Too many fries aren't healthy,” he teased.
“Oh really? Then why did you eat all of them?”—she stopped and halted when she saw me, Julian following suit.
I was seated on the couch, twirling the wine in my glass and taking a slow sip.
Lila smiled at me first. “Hi, Tessa. You're home already.”
Yes, I am. Must be so disappointing. Now you and my husband can't do a quick fuck before I arrive.
I didn't say what was in my mind; I just stared blankly until she took the hint and scurried to the room.
Julian walked up to me next. “Hi, love. How are you?”
I got up, and before I could stop myself, my hand flew across his face, my palm connecting sharply with his cheek.
“What was that for?” he asked, terribly calm.
“You knew about my illness, didn't you?” I asked in a calm tone.
He frowned, genuinely looking confused.
“Was that why you signed my insurance payout?”
“What are you talking about, Tessa? Speak in a language I understand!” he snapped.
“I saw the paper. You signed the insurance payout.”
“Yes, I did,” he admitted in a hard tone.
I scoffed. “You really have no shame. You are even admitting it.”
“I signed it because you said it yourself. You wouldn't want your family to taste a dime from all your hard work, including your insurance payout.”
I paused. Wait, I did say that.
“Do you remember? That night you registered your hotel? So I signed it early so you don't have to deal with disputes.”
I stepped back, memory hitting me sharply.
On the night I registered Tessa Crown Hotel, I had said it during our romantic dinner to celebrate the beginning of the Tessa Crown journey, although the business had crashed when I took all the money that I saved to invest in it and gave it to Julian to grow his father's logistics company.
“So now that it's all cleared up, what the hell did you mean by illness? What on earth are you talking about?”
I bit down on my lips, realizing that my tongue slipped.
He grabbed both sides of my shoulders and shook me violently. “Answer me, Tessa!”
“I-I have brain cancer.”
He froze, his hands dropping from my shoulders, dangling by his sides uselessly.
“Stage four. I have three weeks to live, Julian.” Tears slid down my face.
“H-h-how is that possible? I thought—”
“Yes. The doctor said it was my weak immune system, but he lied.”
“That's not possible, Tessa. You need to go for another check. It was probably a wrong diagnosis.”
“I already went for tests in different hospitals four times, Julian. It's true. I'm dying.” A sob escaped my throat.
Julian fell to his knees, and he was already crying.
“I didn't know how to tell you. I felt so terrible.”
He looked at me. “Tes-Tessa? No. No, please, no. It's not true, right? Please, please tell me it's not true. Please.” His voice broke, and a broken sob escaped him. “Please, Tessa. Please, please. Please!”
I glared down at him.
“No, no, no. Please! Please, Tessa. Don't do this to me. Please, don't leave me. Please, Tessa. Please.”
“When you are done with the act, you will get back up and tell me why the brief I got you was in Lila’s bedroom the day after I heard her having sex.”
He froze and threw his head up; his face was a mess, catarrh rolling down his nose. It was red.
“What-what do you mean?”
“Are you sleeping with your cousin, Julian?”
“Have you lost your mind?! Why would I sleep with—?”
“No, I think you're the one that has lost his mind. You think you can fool me. I know you are cheating with Lila!”
He got on his feet and grabbed my shoulders. “Tessa, this is about you! You are dying. Why are you bringing up Lila?”
“I'm bringing her up because—”
I froze, my head went blank instantly, my gaze blurry.
He frowned at me. “Tessa?”
“I'm bringing her up because…” I tried again, my lips trembled, unable to release the next word.
This is weird. Why can't I remember why I brought up Lila? Why can't I remember why I am arguing with Julian?
I looked around us and down at my glass of wine.
“Why-why am I standing here? What happened?”
“Tessa, are you okay?”
No, I'm not. Because I can't suddenly remember anything. I can't remember why I'm standing before Julian, nor why I was about to say why I'm bringing Lila up, nor do I remember what the argument was about.
My vision went even more blurry, my bones weakened, and before I knew it, I fell into Julian’s arms, unconsciousness wrapping around me.
When I woke up the next morning, Julian was gone.
I got down the stairs and met Lila putting her bedsheets inside the washing machine. A part of it was wet.
“What’s that?” I asked, curious.
She looked at me and I thought I saw a snide smirk, but I assumed I was hallucinating as I had just gotten up.
“Oh this? It's my bedsheets. It stinks of sex.”
I frowned. “Lila, I really do think you should get an apartment because when I'm gone, you can't keep disturbing Julian with your occasional sex, okay?”
I was hoping she wouldn't ask what I meant when I said “when I'm gone,” and thankfully she didn't.
She just smiled. “Tessa, he is the one who wouldn't let me breathe. He sneaked into my room this morning, saying he was exhausted from what happened between him and his wife last night and he needed my pussy to charge up—”
My frown tightened. “H-his wife?”
“Yes,” Lila said matter-of-factly as if it were no big deal.
“Lila, you are sleeping with a married man?”
“Hmm mm.”
“Wait, is he the father of that child?”
“Kinda.”
“Lila!” I scolded. “That's wrong! You shouldn't be sleeping with a married man. What if the wife finds out?”
She leaned into the washing machine as it started working. “She won't. She is naive and stupid. Besides, I'm helping the poor man since his wife won't satisfy him. He likes doggy and a good ride. I offer him exactly that, so it's a win for both of us.” She smirked and excused herself.
I rolled my eyes and picked up my phone to call Julian.
He picked up on the third ring.
“Hey, baby. I was attending to a patient. Are you good?”
“Julian, we need to get Lila an apartment before she gets us both in trouble. You can't believe she brought a married man home.”
He paused. “She did?”
“Yes. And she doesn't even feel remorse about it.”
“Tessa, leave Lila to me. I'll handle her.”
I nodded. “Sure. Also, do you recall what happened last night? I don't remember a thing.”
He paused, this time for a longer time. “Uhm. Nothing. I came home to you drinking wine and joined you. Then we went to bed.”
“Really?” Then I said to myself, “Then why does it feel like something happened?”
A long pause. “Anyway, don't keep your patients waiting. Have fun, baby.”
“Alright, take care, my love. I love you, Tessa.”
“I love you more, Julian.”
CHAPTER 39: The Warning CallJulian’s POVMy study was suffocating. I paced the length of the Persian rug, my phone pressed so hard against my ear that the plastic dug into my skin. The ice in my whiskey glass had melted hours ago, leaving a watered-down mess that tasted exactly like how I felt: diluted, weak, and bitterly cold.My man had failed. A simple perimeter check at Felix Vaughan’s estate, and he was chased off into the ravine like a frightened dog within minutes. Vaughan’s security was suffocating her, walling her off from me.But Tessa was mine. She had always been mine.I hit redial for the sixteenth time that night. The line rang. I expected it to go to voicemail—she had been ignoring me since she woke up from that damn brain surgery. But then, a sharp click echoed in my ear."What do you want, Julian?"Her voice was flat. No anger. No venom. Just a dull, exhausted irritation."Tessa," I breathed, stopping dead in my tracks. A frantic rush of relief hit my chest, quickly
CHAPTER 38: Watching the FenceTessa’s POVI stood by the reinforced glass of the master suite, staring into the dark tree line of Felix’s estate. Sleep was a luxury I couldn't afford tonight. My head throbbed, a dull reminder of the surgeon’s blade, but my mind was too loud to rest.A shadow shifted against the wrought-iron perimeter fence.I didn’t step back. I simply pressed my hand against the cool glass and tracked the movement. It wasn’t a guard. Felix’s men moved with purpose; this figure lingered, testing the boundary.I picked up the intercom on the nightstand. "Markus.""Yes, Ms. Watson?" The head of security answered instantly."South perimeter, just past the oak trees. Someone is testing the fence line.""Locking down. Stay away from the windows."I didn't move from the glass. The feeling of being hunted—the same crawling sensation I had in my past life when Julian's lies began closing in—rushed back. But I wasn’t the prey anymore. The bedroom door opened behind me. Felix
CHAPTER 37: The First DinnerFelix’s POVI set the table myself in the smaller dining room. No staff hovering. Just the two of us. Tessa walked in wearing a simple black dress, hair still damp from the shower she’d insisted on taking despite the nurses’ protests.“Sit,” I said, pulling out her chair. She dropped into it without comment. “Smells good. You cooked?”“Chef did. I told him to keep it light.” I sat across from her and poured wine. “How’s the head?”“Still attached.” She picked up her fork and started eating. No compliments. No wide eyes. Just straight to the food.I watched her. Most people in this house trip over themselves to tell me how impressive everything is. Tessa chewed like she was at a diner.“You’re quiet tonight,” I said.“Recovering from brain surgery tends to do that.” She took another bite. “This is decent. Thanks for dinner.”Decent. I almost laughed. “You’re the first person who’s ever called my chef’s work decent to my face.”She shrugged. “I call things l
CHAPTER 36: The SurgeryTessa’s POVI pushed through the estate gates at six sharp, keys in hand. “I’m heading to the Crown. Tell Felix I’m back at my desk and I expect no interference.”The head of security stepped forward. “Ma’am, Mr. Vaughan said—”“I don’t care what he said. Move.” I didn’t wait for an answer. My driver pulled up and I climbed in, already dialing Francesca.“Morning. Pull every billing file from the last quarter. Red flags only. I’m walking in at nine.”“Got it, Tessa. Three accounts look off already.”“Good. Have them ready.”I hit the office running. Francesca met me at the door with a thick folder.“These vendors,” she said. “Payments don’t match deliveries.”I flipped it open. “Get the leads on the line. Now.”First call, I didn’t waste breath. “This is Tessa Averton. You overbilled the Crown by forty-two thousand. Wire it back within the hour or I send the auditors and your name hits every industry blacklist by lunch.”The man sputtered. “Ms. Averton, there m
Lila’s POVI tapped out the message fast, smirking at my phone screen.“Hey Tessa, it’s Lila. I know things have been horrible between us. I was wrong. Completely. Can we meet? I want to apologize in person and offer whatever help you need with the hotel mess. Family should stick together. Let me make it right.”I hit send, then blocked and unblocked her number so it would look fresh. Julian was still pacing downstairs like a caged animal. I didn’t care. Let him stay desperate. I needed Tessa to bite first. My phone buzzed almost immediately. Tessa.“What game is this, Lila? After cheating with my husband.”I grinned and typed back. “No game. I’m done fighting. Julian’s losing it and I see how wrong we both were. Lunch tomorrow? My treat. Please.”Three dots. Then: “One hour. Public place. Don’t waste my time. If you bring Julian along with you, I'll have you both arrested for stalking and luring.”“I swear, Tessa. Julian doesn’t know about this. She replied almost immediately: “Alrig
CHAPTER 34: Julian’s PanicJulian’s POVI slammed my laptop shut so hard the screen cracked. “What the hell do you mean it’s gone? The article. The photos. All of it—deleted!”My assistant’s voice trembled over the speaker. “Sir, every link is dead. Sites are showing 404 errors. Even the cached versions got wiped. Whoever did this has serious pull.”I paced the living room, phone gripped tight. “Find out who. Now. I want names.”Lila slipped in wearing nothing but my silk robe, hair tousled like she’d just rolled out of bed. She slid her arms around my waist from behind. “Julian, baby, come back to bed. Let me help you forget all this stress.”I shoved her off, harder than I meant to. “Not now, Lila. Tessa’s article vanished. Someone’s shielding her. Felix? Has to be that bastard.”Lila’s face twisted. “Again with Tessa? She’s done with you. Move on.”“Move on?” I laughed, sharp and ugly. “She’s mine. She was always mine. I watched her for through those feeds. Every tear, every meetin
Chapter 14: The Second DawnI stepped out of the hospital and flagged the first cab I saw. The door slammed shut behind me.“City center,” I told the driver. Then I pulled out my phone and called Tony.Tony was my financial assistant for my hotel. He had been the one keeping all the money I saved u
CHAPTER THIRTEENI woke up slowly, my eyelids felt heavy at first, then they fluttered open. The room was dim, machines hummed softly nearby. A single flower rested on the small table beside my bed. Its petals were a soft, creamy white with the faintest blush of pink, delicate and perfectly formed
CHAPTER SEVENRecord: Oh fuck, you are so tight, baby! Then, right after Julian’s voice, were slaps as if he were pounding into something. I looked at my cracked screen, unable to fathom what I was listening to.Later that night, the banana bread forgotten, I lay on the bed, awaiting his arrival.H
CHAPTER SIXI decided to stay at home for the day as I searched online for meals I could prepare for Julian before he got home without so much stress. I needed to tell him about my condition. It'd be so cruel of me to leave this world without letting him know about this. He would blame himself for
