CHAPTER 45: The Arrest

Lila’s POV

I stood at the counter in the boutique. The cashier swiped my credit card again.

"I am sorry, Miss Vaughan," the cashier said. "It is declined."

"That is impossible," I said. I snatched the card back. I gave her another one. "Try this one."

She swiped it. The machine beeped red. "Declined."

I grabbed my purse and walked out. I took out my phone and called my bank.

"Why are my cards not working?" I yelled.

"Your father froze all your accounts," the banker said. "

  • I Came Back To Ruin You   Dr. Vaughan, I Presume

Chapter 65: Dr. Vaughan, I PresumeTessa's POVI decided to treat him like a negotiation. It was the only way I knew to sit across from a stranger who knew more about me than I did. You don't start with feelings. You start with what's on the table, who's in the room, and who's pretending not to be afraid. He'd brought tea to the sunroom, a tray with two cups, and he set it down on the low table without being asked. I took the chair with its back to the wall and the window on my left. He took the one opposite, then moved it two inches to the side so the light wasn't in my eyes. He did it without comment and hoped I wouldn't notice.I noticed. I put it in the file.---Markus first, because he was the easiest to read.He stood by the door and didn't lean on it. His weight sat on both feet. His eyes went to the window every eight or nine seconds, then the corridor, then back to Felix, never to me. That was the part that interested me. A man guarding a house watches the house. A man guard

  • I Came Back To Ruin You   The Stranger's Chair

Chapter 64: The Stranger's ChairFelix's POV "Julian isn't coming today," I told her.It was the truest thing I could say that wasn't also the cruelest. She nodded, slowly, the way she nodded at contractors who'd given her a number she planned to beat. Then she asked if she could have her tea, and I said yes, and I stood up from that chair like a man getting off a ship.I made it as far as the hallway. I shut her door to an inch and stood with my back against the wall.Markus was already there. So was the younger guard, Reyes, who took one look at my face and found something fascinating on the ceiling."Give us the corridor," I said.Reyes went. Markus stayed."Listen carefully," I said. "Everyone in this house hears this from me, and they hear it today. Nobody tells her we were together. Not Francesca, not the housekeepers, not the men on the gate. If she asks what I am to her, I'm her doctor. If she asks why she's in my bed, she's in a guest room, and it's a medical precaution.""S

  • I Came Back To Ruin You   The Man Who Held My Hand

Chapter 63: The Man Who Held My Hand Tessa's POVThe man in the chair was asleep, and I had never seen him before in my life.I lay very still and took inventory, the way you do in a hotel room when you wake up in the wrong city. Ceiling: high, cream, not mine. Sheets: heavy, a gray I would never have chosen. A blanket pulled up to my chin that somebody had tucked in on one side only. And in the armchair beside the bed, a tall man with white at his temples and his chin on his chest, one sleeve rolled to the elbow.Gray light under the curtains. No sound from the house. My left wrist had something on it, a smooth black band with a button on the side. I didn't know what it was. I pressed the button.Nothing visible happened. I pressed it again, longer, and said, "Who are you?"My voice came out low and steady. That surprised me.He woke the way soldiers do, all at once and without moving. His eyes opened on me and stayed there. They were hazel, dark, and so tired they looked bruised."

  • I Came Back To Ruin You   The Wife In His Voice

Chapter 62: The Wife in His VoiceLila's POVThe guest house had a pool house's soul and a pool house's smell: chlorine in the walls, damp towels that nobody had moved in two summers. Julian's father had put it in Julian's name as a wedding present and then forgotten it existed. So had the repo men. So had the court. That made it perfect. It also made me a woman living in somebody's leftover.Maya had asked me to leave on Tuesday. She did it nicely, with a casserole she'd made for the road, which was somehow worse. *My cousin keeps asking questions at work, Lila. I can't have them looking at me.* She didn't say *you scare me.* She didn't have to. I'd seen her watching my face while I read the text on the flip phone, and I'd seen her decide I wasn't the girl she'd known since college anymore.I wasn't. I'd stopped being her somewhere around the second night on that couch. The text that came after, the one I'd left unanswered for two days, said only: *Patience. Julian is not your concer

  • I Came Back To Ruin You   Do Not "Force" Her

Chapter 61: Do Not Force HerFelix's POV I brought her everything I had.Two shoeboxes and a leather album from my study, a flash drive, a stack of envelopes tied with kitchen string. Eleven weeks of a woman's life had been scattered across my house and my phone, and I was going to put it back in her hands. I had it all laid out on the study table by eight.Marchetti had told me to wait. I'd told her I was done waiting.Tessa came in at nine in one of my sweaters, with the Ledger under her arm. She'd been quiet since yesterday. She'd taken her tea and her pills in front of me, both from sealed packets Markus opened himself, and when I asked if she'd slept she said "some," in a tone that closed the subject. I'd learned not to push on that tone."What is all this?""You."She looked at the table. Then she sat and opened the album. The first photograph was from the Crown rooftop, three days before the opening. Her in a hard hat, laughing at the architect, one hand shading her eyes. I'd

  • I Came Back To Ruin You   VOICE MARKED "HUSBAND"

Chapter 60: A Voice Marked "Husband"Tessa's POVI found him by accident.I was looking for Francesca's number, scrolling through a contact list I didn't remember building, and there he was between *Jewelers (Crown)* and *Kessler, Dr.* Three letters, and a small red heart someone had typed beside them.*Julian ♥.*The photo was a man on a terrace with the sun behind him. Dark hair, good jaw. A smile you'd trust with your house keys.I put the phone face down on the desk and wrote the time in the Ledger, then *Found J. in contacts. Heart.* I looked at the heart for a while. I'd never been a woman who put a heart next to a name. Either I'd been a different woman then, or someone else had held this phone."What are you doing?" Felix said from the doorway.I hadn't heard him come in. He had a way of arriving that was too quiet for a man his size."Nothing.""You've been looking at that for four minutes.""You've been watching me for four minutes?""Yes." He didn't apologize. "Is it him?"

  • I Came Back To Ruin You   ANONYMOUS

CHAPTER SIXI decided to stay at home for the day as I searched online for meals I could prepare for Julian before he got home without so much stress. I needed to tell him about my condition. It'd be so cruel of me to leave this world without letting him know about this. He would blame himself for

  • I Came Back To Ruin You   EXPOSED

CHAPTER SEVENRecord: Oh fuck, you are so tight, baby! Then, right after Julian’s voice, were slaps as if he were pounding into something. I looked at my cracked screen, unable to fathom what I was listening to.Later that night, the banana bread forgotten, I lay on the bed, awaiting his arrival.H

  • I Came Back To Ruin You   PAST

CHAPTER TWOJulian stepped out, turned around, and wrapped Lila in a hug one last time before making his way towards the stairs, to our bedroom. Fortunately, they didn't see me as I was hidden by the dark. Confusion flooded my thoughts. What could possibly make Julian come out at 1 a.m. in the nigh

  • I Came Back To Ruin You   VISITOR

CHAPTER ONE I have brain cancer and three weeks to live. I still recall the sound of the bells ringing in my ears when the doctor announced it to me. It made little sense. Just six months ago, I went for tests as the symptoms of migraine, memory loss, partial blindness, and bleeding through the no
