Chapter 4

Author: Little Shadow
Keira glared at me, a chill flickering in her eyes.

Suppressing the terror in my chest, I forced a helpless, bitter smile. "Keira, what are you doing back? I wanted to give you a surprise, but my legs just gave out. A pen dropped under the desk. When I tried to grab it, I fell…"

The tension in Keira's shoulders melted instantly.

She hurried over, and her voice regained its usual tenderness. "Why did you come home on your own without calling me first? What if you had hurt yourself even worse?"

In my mind, I heard her exhale a long sigh of relief.

[Thank God. I thought he found out. He didn't touch the drawer, right? Whatever. It doesn't matter anyway. The pills have been swapped out for days. It's a slow-acting toxin. Even if they run tests, it'll just look like organic organ failure.]

My body went rigid, and my hands clenched into tight fists at my sides.

I couldn't understand why, even if she had fallen out of love with me, she wanted me dead so badly.

That evening, Gabriel showed up at our doorstep.

The moment he walked through the door, he looked at me with deep concern and showered me with warm inquiries. "Cody, why did you suddenly leave the hospital? You didn't even say a single word to me! What do you feel like eating tonight? I'll cook for you!"

"I'd like some honey-glazed ribs," I replied calmly. "Sorry to trouble you, especially since the kitchen isn't exactly in the best shape."

The smile on Gabriel's face froze for a split second. In the past, whenever he offered to cook, I'd always stop him.

Keira, standing nearby, immediately frowned and threw me a reprimanding glance. "Gab's tired after a long day at work. Why are you always bossing him around like a maid?"

With that, she turned straight toward the kitchen. "Gab, I'll help you wash the vegetables."

Sitting in my wheelchair, I watched them stand side by side at the counter.

They shared occasional glances and soft smiles as steam rose from the pots, blurring their faces.

It was just like it had been years ago.

The year we graduated, Gabriel complained that renting was too expensive, so I let him move into my apartment completely rent-free.

Overwhelmed with gratitude, Gabriel swore he'd cook for me every day to repay the favor.

To preserve his pride, I agreed.

Later, when Keira came over to see me and found Gabriel busy in the kitchen, she'd frown and rush in to help just like this.

Back then, I was secretly congratulating myself on how lucky I was to have a loving wife and a loyal friend.

Looking back now, I was so stupid that it was sickening.

As dinner wrapped up, Gabriel suddenly let out a quiet sigh and looked over at me. "Cody, the weather's supposed to be nice next weekend. Why don't we head back to that mountain road in the suburbs to unwind?

"Ever since the accident, I've been haunted by it. I keep having nightmares at night. I want to drive that road with you again and finally overcome my fear."

Keira's eyes burned with enthusiasm as she chimed in, "I can swap shifts next week and go with you guys. Cody does need to get out and get some fresh air."

Gabriel's thoughts reverberated inside my head.

[You got lucky and survived the crash last time. But this time, you won't be so lucky!]

I slowly raised my head and curled my lips into a pleasant smile. "Sure. Let's all go together."

After dinner, Keira stepped out onto the balcony to take a call.

As I watched Gabriel clear the table, I decided to accelerate my plan.

After wheeling closer to him, I let a carefully measured trace of exhaustion creep into my voice. "Gab, I need to talk to you about Keira. I really don't know who else I can turn to."

Gabriel's hands stilled. "What's wrong, Cody?"

I took a deep breath, my eyes welling up with faint redness. "I think… Keira might be cheating on me."

Three years later, a rehabilitation clinic officially held its grand opening right in the heart of the city's bustling commercial district.Dressed in a sharp, tailored suit, I stood in the center of the room delivering my opening address. My right leg—once severely atrophied—showed no remaining trace of disability, save for a faint surgical scar along my calf. Every step I took was steady and grounded. The room was packed with people.Among them were my former lead physician, investors who had believed in my project's potential, and fellow patients who had stayed by my side through my darkest days. Now, they were all part of my team, rewarded with generous compensation. After surviving that ordeal, I refused to let my life waste away.I took my reclaimed divorce assets along with the massive compensation payout from Keira and went abroad to formally study rehabilitation. Not just for myself, but for every patient out there who, like me, was once handed a slow death sentence by

The moment Keira saw me, the dead, hollow light in her eyes suddenly burst into a desperate flare. She broke free from the police officer's grip and fell to her knees before me with a heavy thud."Cody! Cody, I was wrong!" she wept hysterically. She was now stripped of any remaining grace or the arrogant poise she had once carried as a chief cardiac surgeon."I lost my mind! That bastard Gabriel manipulated me! Forgive me, please. I do love you!"As I looked down from above at the woman I had once loved so deeply, I felt nothing but a wave of nausea.A cold chuckle escaped my lips. "Keira, I've always wanted to ask you one question. If you had truly fallen out of love with me and fallen for Gabriel, all you had to do was tell me the truth."I'm not someone who would cling on desperately. I would have signed the divorce papers and let you both be together. So why go for the kill? Why did you have to take my life?"Keira froze where she knelt. After a long moment, she spoke in a t

Gabriel glared bitterly at Keira, likely suspecting that she had lost her nerve to shove me off the cliff.Looking at their distinct expressions, I suddenly laughed. "Did you two want me to go over the edge?"Both of them froze.Keira forced a tight smile. "Cody, what nonsense are you talking about?"I didn't move. Instead, I pulled my phone from my pocket and played the video recording of Gabriel in the study."Keira, you ungrateful bitch! You had me drain the brake fluid…" Gabriel's furious voice echoed across the desolate mountaintop.Keira's face transformed instantly as she whipped her head toward him.Terrified, Gabriel backed away repeatedly while pointing a finger at me as he shrieked, "You set me up?"I stared at them coldly. "Keira, you held onto the maintenance receipt as insurance. If things went south, you could pin the whole thing on Gabriel."And Gabriel, you stole it wanting to turn the tables on her. The two of you truly are a match made in hell."Just then,

The next day, using the pain in my leg as an excuse, I had Keira take me to the hospital for a checkup.Taking advantage of the break while she went off to a department meeting, I put on a mask and hat, then hailed a cab straight to a private forensic testing agency I'd arranged to meet with.I handed the few white pills in the zip-lock bag to the analyst and requested an expedited chemical report. Two hours later, the report was in my hands. The results were clear. The pills contained zero active therapeutic ingredients for nerve recovery, and prolonged consumption would cause chronic liver and kidney failure. My knuckles turned white around the report. To think that the person sharing my bed could be so vile. When I returned to the hospital, I went straight to the pharmacy. After bribing an intern nurse, I obtained the system records of the medication Keira had prescribed for me on the day of my discharge.Under the prescriber column, it read "Gabriel".Keira was a department

I stared dead into Gabriel's eyes and delivered each word with weight. "Yesterday, I caught a glimpse of her locking a massive accidental death insurance policy into her study drawer. The beneficiary isn't me."She even changed the drawer's lock code. She's guarding me like I'm a thief. Gab, do you think she's seeing someone else behind my back?"Gabriel nearly lost his grip on the plate he was holding. He forced a stiff, awkward smile. His tone was thick with disbelief and false comfort as he replied, "Cody, don't overthink things. Is being cooped up at home getting to you?"Dr. Walker is amazing to you. She'd practically give you her heart. Everyone at our hospital knows she's a model wife. Don't go hurting your relationship over a little paranoia."Yet in my mind, Gabriel's inner voice took a wild turn.[A massive insurance policy? Does Keira have another man besides me? Or is she hiding money from me? This won't do. I have to check it out tonight!]Playing right along, I let
