Bella slipped an arm around my shoulders as we left the office. I kept my gaze lowered, praying she had believed my story that I had simply come to deliver the register and nothing more. Even though Marcus had just helped to clean my wound, it still wouldn’t have looked appropriate in Bella’s eyes .

But judging by her reaction, she didn’t suspect a thing.

She glanced over her shoulder at her father, who had already settled behind his desk.

“Daddy, can we borrow your jacket?”

“Yeah, sure.”

He handed it over, and Bella immediately draped it around my shoulders.

I turned back toward him.

“Thank you, sir,” I murmured timidly.

His eyes softened.

“Take care of yourself, Ella. We care about you.”

The words sounded innocent enough, but the way he delivered them carried a double meaning that made heat rise to my cheeks. Bella guided me out of the office, completely unaware.

We left the office.

“Why didn’t you tell me this morning that you fell?” Bella asked once we were in the hallway, concern lacing her voice.

“Uh…” I looked away guiltily. “I didn’t want to worry you.”

She stopped walking.

“Ella, come on. We’ve already spent years apart. I really don’t want to lose you again.”

A faint smile touched my lips.

She was being sincere with me while I stood there carrying secrets and complicated feelings inside my chest.

“Uh, Bella?” I said, trying to steady my voice. “Why didn’t you tell me your dad is a professor here?”

She slapped a hand against her forehead.

“Okay, that’s definitely my fault. We had so much catching up to do that it completely slipped my mind.”

She laughed before adding, “But don’t get any ideas. He’s strict when it comes to grades. He won’t give you free marks just because you’re a family friend.”

I forced a smile.

“That’s okay. I’ll work hard.”

We continued walking toward the campus exit.

Then my eyes landed on a couple standing near the stairwell.

A boy and a girl were kissing passionately, completely oblivious to everyone around them.

I almost looked away.

Then I recognized him.

Henry.

My lip curled into a scoff.

No wonder I had never truly forgiven him.

Forgiving a cheating man was like washing clothes while they were still lying in the dirt. The effort was pointless.

Beside me, Bella groaned.

“Who are these idiots? Let me go knock some sense into them.”

I quickly grabbed her wrist.“Don’t.” “What?”

“Just leave them alone. Let’s go.”

The last thing I wanted was for Henry to notice me.

I was glad I now had a reason to get rid of him completely from my life , and I certainly didn’t want Bella discovering how terrible I was at choosing men.

Neither of them noticed us as we walked past.

Bella accompanied me to the hospital, where they cleaned the wound properly and wrapped a fresh bandage around my wound .

Afterward, we headed back to my dorm.

“I’m not coming in,” she said. “I’ve got an assignment to finish. Take care of yourself, okay?”

She kissed my cheek before hurrying away.

I entered my room and collapsed onto my bed.

Only then did I realize I was still wearing Marcus’s jacket.

I slowly lifted it closer.

It smelled faintly of roses.

Immediately, memories flooded my mind—his fingers brushing my piercing, the way my skin had reacted beneath his touch.

Goosebumps raced across my arms.

I yanked the jacket off and tossed it aside.

I wasn’t ready to sin again because If hurting my stomach had been karma the last time sinful thoughts consumed me, next time it could be my head.

The ridiculous thought made me snort.

Exhaustion quickly won, and within minutes, I drifted asleep.

Hours later, loud moans yanked me from my sleep.

I groaned and rolled over.

The noise was coming from the room next door.

Honestly, did these people have no shame?

I buried my face in the pillow and tried to ignore it.

The sounds only grew louder.

“Oh, yes… Daddy…”

My eyes snapped open.

I sat upright.

“The guy’s cock can’t possibly be that good,” I muttered irritably.

Grabbing my phone and Marcus’s jacket, I stormed out of the room.

As I walked down the corridor, I noticed a man dressed entirely in black standing near the stairwell.

A lighter flickered repeatedly in his hand .

For some reason, the sight unsettled me.

Still, I ignored him and continued outside.

I headed to a nearby grocery store and bought a few things before making my way back to the dorm.

But the moment I returned, the bag slipped from my fingers.

Everything crashed onto the pavement.

My dormitory was on fire.

Bright orange flames devoured the building, swallowing windows and walls in an inferno of smoke and heat.

Students poured out screaming, running in every direction.

Some were crying.

Others stood frozen in horror.

The fire roared louder and louder, consuming everything in its path.

And all I could do was stand there and watch as everything I owned was burning to ashes .

The moment her phone rang before she entered, I sighed in relief. She picked it up and stayed outside, talking for a while instead of coming in immediately. Marcus quickly straightened up before slipping inside her closet to hide. Honestly, I didn’t know what had gotten into him. A few days ago he had been extremely vigilant about not getting caught, but now he acted as though he feared nothing. Sometimes he really confused me. I quickly pretended to search for the documents, secretly sliding them under her bed. By the time Bella finally walked in, I had already composed myself. “Oh, Ella, you’re here? You’re honestly such a sweetheart.” I smiled, guilt flooding every part of me. “What are you doing here? I thought you had already left,” I asked, trying to sound normal even though my whole body was tense. “I forgot my jacket in the closet,” she replied. My heart nearly stopped. Jesus Christ… that was exactly where Marcus was hiding. As she started walking toward the closet, I quickly

Bella, I went and held her hand. She looked at me with lingering anger. “I didn’t abandon you, alright? I thought you were going to be busy and that calling or texting would only burden you.”She scoffed. “What an odd thing to say. Burden me? Are you for real? Well, that’s settled then—you don’t care about me. And it’s okay. Please leave my room now.” She yanked her hand away.“Bella, please… please look at me.” I cupped her cheeks. “Look at me. I care about you so much. I’m sorry I got caught up in that situation I told you about, but I’m finalizing it soon and I’ll tell you everything. I love you so much, Bella. Don’t ever forget that. There’s no way I could abandon you. Does that make sense?”Her eyes softened and she pouted. I pulled her into a tight hug, relief flooding me when I realized her anger was only about feeling neglected and not about my relationship with her father. While we hugged I glanced toward the door and froze. Marcus stood there, clearly impressed. He mouthed s

I sat on the couch the next morning while Marcus stood by the kitchen counter pretending to prepare breakfast. My phone buzzed. Me: Why are we doing this? I looked up at him before typing back. Marcus :Because Bella can walk in at any second. He looked at me and grinned before another message appeared. Marcus: I’m preparing for the silence when she arrives. I rolled my eyes. A second later my phone buzzed again. Marcus: Did you just roll your eyes? Do you know what happens when you do that? I sighed before replying. Me: Yeah, I know… sir. He smiled to himself while reading it. Another text came through. Marcus: Seriously though… I miss you. I want you near me. I couldn’t help scoffing. Me: Then why are you standing so far away? His reply came almost instantly. Marcus: Okay… come here. I looked at him from across the living room before shaking my head. Me: No. You were the one who made the rules. Bella can arrive anytime and we can’t make anything look suspicious. H

I’d just sighed and stood up from the bed to leave when he suddenly yanked me back against his chest.“Whoa…” He laughed softly. “That was fast.”“Where are you heading?” he asked, trying to sound serious.I looked down before answering. “But you just told me to go.”“I was lying,” he admitted, trying to hide his smile. “Bella is coming back tomorrow.”I let out a small sigh.“Why did you lie to me?”He smiled wider. “Come on, I was only teasing you.”“Don’t you want your daughter to come back?”He burst into laughter.“No way… there’s no way you just said that.”I frowned.“What?”He gently poked my forehead.“If you’re mine now, then that means Bella is your daughter too.”I immediately sat up and looked at him.“Come on… let’s not talk about that, please. “I don't even mention it because I’m sure if Bella ever found out, she would never agree to any of this.” I thought .I quickly changed the subject and I was glad he didn’t drag it as well .“Just paint me already. I’m excited.”

When I lay back on the bed afterward, my breathing was still uneven, and the room carried the quiet evidence of everything we had just shared, scattered all around us . She was lying there so peacefully that she looked like a piece of art , completely spent . I smiled to myself and leaned closer.“Can I draw you, Elle?” I asked softly. She didn’t answer.I gently turned her onto her back. She was breathing , but something felt so wrong .“Jesus Christ…”My heart immediately started racing. Had she fainted? Had I been too rough with her? I quickly lifted her into my arms.“Elle…”She still didn’t respond.I let out a shaky breath and immediately grabbed my phone.“Is it possible for someone to faint after being intimate?”The first result reassured me that although it wasn’t common, it could happen because of exhaustion or overwhelming emotions, and that giving them a few minutes to rest was usually enough.I finally sighed in relief.Because honestly, I couldn’t imagine explaining this ni

When I returned with the soup, he was sleeping. I sighed. “That soon? Couldn’t you at least wait for me to bring it to you?” I shook my head with a small smile. Still, I didn’t have the heart to wake him up. Maybe he really needed the rest. I carefully placed the bowl on the bedside table and turned to leave so I could let him sleep.“Where are you going?” he asked suddenly.I turned around in surprise. “You’re awake?”He smiled sleepily.“That’s good,” I said, letting out a relieved breath. “Your soup is ready, and you can’t eat it cold. It’ll warm you up.”Before I could pick up the bowl again, he reached for my wrist and gently pulled me down onto the bed beside him. Then, with his free hand, he lifted the blanket and covered both of us.“Marcus…” I looked at him, trying not to smile. “I made your soup.”His lips curved into a lazy grin.“Who said I wanted the soup?”I pouted. “But I made it for you. At least try it. It’ll help warm you up.”He slowly shook his head, never taking h
