Jay Cooper, Giselle White's assistant-slash-sugar baby, accuses me of stealing his mother's personal effects from him. That night, my mom, who's severely ill, gets dangled from a helicopter. Impatience is written all over Giselle's eyes. "If you refuse to return the cross pendant to Jay, your mom will pay for your willful act!" I do my best to suppress the throbbing pain coming from my heart as I beg hoarsely to Giselle to let my mom go. But my seven-year-old daughter, Valerie Walker, jabs a button on the remote control with an icy expression. "This is what you get for going against Mr. Cooper time and again!" I can only watch as Mom falls from a high altitude, soon smashing into the ground heavily. Sorrow fills my heart as I plead in a humble tone, "Please, I'm begging you… Please take my mom to the hospital…" "That's enough, Dylan Walker! The one dangling from the helicopter is a dummy, not your actual mom! Why are you still putting on an act?"

Chapter 1

"Mom!"

My daughter, Valerie Walker, and my wife, Giselle White, had actually tried to kill my mother because they were heartbroken over another man.

Mom was already running out of time, yet she still had to suffer something this cruel.

Staggering on unsteady feet, I hoisted my blood-soaked mother onto my back and rushed to the hospital without stopping. The only staff member who came to see us was an intern, who looked at me helplessly.

"I'm sorry," he said awkwardly, "But a VIP's husband got injured. It was really just a small cut on his finger, but she called every specialist over to his side…"

I settled Mom onto a hospital bed and immediately ran toward the VIP ward. I couldn't afford to waste even a second. With a thud, I dropped to my knees at the door.

With all my dignity abandoned, my voice came out hoarse and broken. "Please, I'm begging you, save my mother."

When I looked up, I saw Giselle and Valerie standing on either side of Jay Cooper, protecting him like devoted guardians. They looked exactly like a happy family of three.

Only then did I realize that the so-called VIP was Giselle.

Jay edged closer to Giselle's shoulder, looking thoroughly aggrieved. "Dylan, wasn't it enough that you stole my late mother's keepsake? Now, you're lying about your own mother, too? Are you trying to steal Giselle away from me on purpose?"

The moment those accusatory words left his mouth, Giselle's expression darkened with fury. "Try using your mother to lie to me again, and I'll cancel her surgery altogether!"

The pain in my chest made it hard to breathe. Tears streamed down my face as I pleaded desperately, "I swear I'm not lying. She's in Room 303 right—"

Valerie cut me off coldly. "Enough!"

Her eyes shifted thoughtfully before she suggested, "You've upset Mr. Cooper so much that he can't even sleep peacefully. How about this? Lick his shoes for one minute as an apology. If you do, I'll ask Mommy to save Grandma for you."

I couldn't believe her. The indifference in her eyes was almost identical to Giselle's. I just couldn't comprehend why they had become so ruthless.

Back then, Giselle had proposed to me 100 times before I finally believed that she was serious and not just playing around. Even after we got married, she kept her distance from other men. All her affection was reserved for me alone.

Then, we had a beautiful daughter, Valerie. She had been attached to me since she was a child. She had always said I was the best father in the world.

But everything changed when Jay, Giselle's assistant, appeared.

I looked at Giselle with despair written all over my face. She had never bothered to lift a finger in the kitchen, yet somehow, she was now feeding Jay soup. Not once did she spare me a glance.

Thinking of Mom's pale face, I bit down hard on my lip until I tasted blood. For Mom, I would endure it.

Without another moment of hesitation, I dropped to the floor on my hands and knees. Humiliation burned through every inch of me as I stuck out my tongue.

Again and again, I polished Jay's leather shoes until they gleamed.

He lifted his chin with obvious disgust. "You don't seriously think this will make up for what you've done to me, do you? That pendant was the only thing my mother left behind!"

Contrary to his words, a flicker of triumph flashed through his eyes before he could hide it.
