Chapter 2

Author: Sweetie Moore
I stood up and said coolly, "Why would Bryan need my assistance when he is so outstanding at his job? Besides, didn't you already reserve the director position for him long ago?"

Ignoring my bewildered colleagues and Caitlin's sharp shouts of reprimand, I turned and walked straight out.

Caitlin chased after me the entire way, only catching up when I was downstairs hailing a cab.

Panting, she suppressed her irritation and explained, "What are you so angry about? Mr. Eaton is a relative of Bryan's, so I'm only sucking up to him for the sake of our future."

Seeing that I still wasn't speaking, she grabbed my hand. Then, she pulled a watch from her pocket and put it on my wrist.

"I got you this. Do you like it? Remember back when we'd wince at spending 50 dollars on a single meal? Now we're wearing watches worth thousands of dollars. Zane, trust me—things are only going to get better for us from here on out."

If I hadn't known she had bought Bryan a limited-edition Rolex worth a hundred thousand dollars, I would have been thrilled to receive the most expensive gift in our seven years of dating.

But at this moment, all I could do was let out a cold laugh. It felt utterly meaningless.

Caitlin saw me smiling and thought she had managed to appease me. Playfully, she spread her fingers out in front of me.

"Once I get promoted to CEO, we'll get married. You'd better have the ring ready by then, Mr. Groom."

Watching the delight plastered all over her face, I chose not to tell her that Donovan Eaton was actually my relative, not Bryan's.

That was why, no matter how badly things had blown up this time, I was the only one who could salvage it. Whether the partnership continued or not rested entirely on my say-so.

It was just that this time, I had no intention of cleaning up Caitlin's mess.

When the time came, not only would her dream of becoming CEO go up in smoke, but she would be thrown out on the street as well.

I had always responded to her every need. This time, however, I didn't make a single gesture.

She awkwardly withdrew her hand and patted me on the shoulder, trying to act as if nothing had happened.

"Hey, come on now. As a man, you need to learn to be magnanimous. Don't bother cooking dinner tonight. I've booked us a restaurant. I'm taking you out to eat."

I glanced at her. So, she actually remembered that today was our anniversary.

In the first couple of years, we had been big on rituals. But as we got busier, we stopped celebrating.

I knew she was only doing this to make it up to me. Once, I would have been overjoyed. But belated affection was cheaper than dirt, and I no longer cared for it.

"I'll just pretend you never said anything about wanting to resign," she continued briskly. "Take a good rest this afternoon. During your suspension, I'll have to trouble you to keep an eye on the project.

"Bryan's nothing more than a rich playboy. When it comes to the technical side, you're the only one I trust. I've already sent you the address. Don't be late, okay?"

Her phone rang, and she turned to head back inside to answer it.

I didn't bother checking her text. I wasn't going to that restaurant tonight, and I had even less intention of helping her with the project.

I took off the cheap watch and tossed it into a nearby trash can without a second thought. Then, I turned around and called Uncle Donovan.

"Uncle Donovan, I've resigned from my job."

On the other end of the line, Uncle Donovan fell silent. After a few seconds, he asked what I planned to do about my relationship with Caitlin.

"I'm going to break up with her."

Uncle Donovan was delighted and immediately said he would cancel the partnership. He even comforted me, saying, "Good for you for breaking up. I never thought you two would last anyway.

"Caitlin's the type of woman who only takes and never gives. The important thing is that you've come to your senses. Go home and apologize to your parents. Family is family; you don't stay mad at each other forever."

I gave a vague response and chatted for a few more minutes. Then, I hung up and took a cab home.

As the scenery flew past the window, I found myself unconsciously reminiscing about my past with Caitlin.

Back when I was studying abroad, I had been drawn to her resilient, ambitious spirit. We met, got to know each other, and fell in love during college.

But just as I was about to introduce her to my parents, they adamantly opposed the relationship. They pointed out the cracks in our daily life, insisting she wasn't right for me and that love between people from such different backgrounds would never last.

Furious at my parents' surveillance and what I saw as an overwhelming need to control me, I severed ties with them just to be with Caitlin.

Caitlin had tried every approach—sweet talk and harsh words alike—but she still couldn't win me back. Finally, she completely lost it. "I've put up with you for long enough! You're the one who lied first, so what right do you have to be angry with me? And now you're bringing another woman here just to spite me? What exactly are you trying to do?"Even now, she was still blaming me for not telling her the truth. When I didn't respond, she took it as an admission of guilt and kept on ranting, "Were you afraid I'd spend all your money? Is that why you deliberately kept your guard up against me?"You really went all out, didn't you? You were even willing to tough it out alongside me just to fool me. I just don't get it—why did you have to play me like that?"I had no desire to waste any more words. Just as I was about to leave, Valerie couldn't hold back anymore and told Caitlin the truth on my behalf."I take it you're Zane's ex-girlfriend? Since you want to know the truth so badly,

Caitlin paused for a moment before asking, "You own this apartment? Zane, you come from such a wealthy family, yet you deliberately tricked me into living a hard-up life with you?"I could sense she was about to launch into another long-winded lecture, so I hung up without hesitation. It hadn't been my choice to leave home, and as for making her live a hard-up life—well, that depended on what she was comparing it to.Aside from a slightly rough start, things had gone pretty smoothly for us. I covered the rent and all our daily expenses, and I always bought her gifts for every holiday and special occasion. In fact, I never touched a single cent of her income, letting her keep it all to herself. Over the years, she had likely saved up more than enough for a down payment on an apartment of her own. It was just that I didn't know how much of that savings was left after she bought so many expensive gifts for Bryan. Not long after, Caitlin called me again. I immediately blocked her on

I had long grown tired of listening to Caitlin ramble on about all that.I never blamed her for going to business dinners all the time. At one point, I had even felt sorry for her and wanted to ease her load. But back then, she really was at business dinners. Now, she was just gallivanting around with Bryan, going on dates, and pretending it was work.Caitlin thought that as long as she sounded righteous and self-assured enough, her lies would become the truth. Little did she know, Bryan had long since sent me videos and photos of them having fun together.I just hadn't bothered to confront her before. I cut her off. "No matter what happened in the past, you can work hard for yourself from now on. Let's just part on good terms."Just then, Michelle happened to pass by. I called out to her to finalize the handover procedures. Mr. Fischer looked regretful. "Are you sure you won't reconsider staying? I think very highly of your abilities. I can give you the CEO position if you wa

Caitlin snapped. "Just because I didn't do what you wanted, you decided to take revenge on me? You, of all people, should know how much I've sacrificed for the CEO position."Revenge?I let out a cold laugh and said, "I had the project well in hand, yet you insisted on handing it over to Bryan to pad his credentials. Now that things have gone wrong, you want to blame me? How utterly absurd!"I had no idea when she had developed this habit of always shifting the blame onto others.Feeling the strange looks from everyone around her, and already irritated from just losing her job, Caitlin raised an eyebrow at me and retorted, "Are you saying that you're completely blameless?"If you hadn't hidden things from me, how would I have made this mistake? Seven years together, and this is how little you trust me? Were you ever serious about building a future with me?"Uncle Donovan was about to explode in anger and say something, but I raised a hand to stop him.Whatever love had once exis

"What?" Caitlin froze on the spot, sizing me up with several long looks. Then, she asked in disbelief, "Mr. Fischer, is there some kind of misunderstanding? How could a broke loser like Zane possibly have such a wealthy relative? I've never once heard him mention it."She was adamant that it couldn't be me.After all, in the seven years we'd been together, we had endured so many days of poverty side by side. She simply couldn't wrap her head around the fact I was the son of a wealthy family.Mr. Fischer let out a cold snort, not bothering to waste his breath on Caitlin.Left with no choice, she turned to Bryan."Bryan, say something. Isn't Mr. Eaton your relative? Didn't you say you had already worked everything out with Mr. Fischer?"Bryan was deathly pale in the face. He hung his head low, not daring to speak.Out in the world, we were whoever we made ourselves to be.He had just said it offhandedly, figuring no one would actually verify it. Caught up in the moment, he let th

It was ridiculous, really. Bryan had stolen my project, so if something went wrong, it was his responsibility to begin with. And yet, Caitlin could actually praise him for just doing his job?Caitlin's face hardened as she pointed a finger at me. "Zane, I'll give you one last chance—"I cut her off. "Stop. No matter how many times you say it, I'm not going to help clean up your messes anymore. Since Bryan is so capable, what do you have to worry about if you just leave it to him?"Because I kept pushing back, Caitlin's face turned red with rage."I gave you a chance. Don't you regret this. Not only am I approving your resignation, but I'll also make sure you're blacklisted across the entire industry. Let's see who else would want you besides me!"She dragged a bewildered Francis into Bryan's car and sped off.I shook my head, completely unconcerned. Then, I tossed the flowers into the trash and turned to walk into the bar.I was in the middle of having a great time when Uncle Do
