Chapter 1

The wind was so strong that it stung my eyes.

I walked in the opposite direction for a long time. At some point, I reached a bridge over a river.

A year ago, right at this very spot, I stopped Simone Carson from jumping into the river.

She had been crying about the man she loved finding someone else.

Like a fool, I comforted her and spent an hour in the cold by the river.

When Zachary Guzman got my call, he drove over.

He was usually very reserved with women, but he had picked up Simone without a second thought.

I had been stupid and only felt worried. I never noticed how practiced that movement had been, like he had done it countless times.

Besides that, I also failed to notice the complicated looks passing between them.

My stomach churned.

I leaned against the railing and bent over. Cold sweat broke out on my forehead.

A kind-hearted passerby came over and asked after me.

I waved the concern off and said that I was fine.

The phone in my pocket suddenly started vibrating.

It was Zachary. He was very particular and demanded that I check in with him every night at 10 p.m.

After answering the call, I heard him ask coolly, "Why did you take so long to answer?"

The passerby was still hanging around. He asked before I could say a thing, "Are you really alright? You look really pale."

Zachary immediately sounded nervous. "Is there a man with you? What are you doing exactly, Helena?"

I smiled gratefully at the man. "It’s alright, I’ll be fine."

After the passerby left, I said into the phone, "He’s a stranger. I don’t even know him."

But Zachary’s tone got even colder and harsher.

"Turn on your camera. I want to see you now, Helena. Don’t disappoint me."

"Am I a criminal to you, Zachary?"

Tears stung my eyes.

Zachary was the one who had embraced Simone. He was the one who had been lying to me all along.

That was the reason why he thought I would do the exact thing he had.

Zachary went quiet.

A long pause later, I heard the sound of a lighter flaring through the line.

Zachary said, "Do whatever you want then. I don’t want to bother with all this anymore."

The line went dead.

While I was in a daze, snowflakes fell onto the screen, melting into water.

The discomfort in my stomach lessened, and I kept moving forward.

But then, my legs went weak, and I fell to the ground.

The next time I opened my eyes, I found myself staring at a white ceiling. My nose was filled with the smell of disinfectant.

I heard Simone’s delighted voice.

"Helena, you’re finally awake! I bet you didn’t know that I thought it was a scam when the nurse called me. It’s so great that you’re alright."

I turned and looked at Simone.

The concern she had for me shone so sincerely in her eyes.

It was no wonder Zachary never told me about his ex-wife and never allowed me to ask too much about his past.

His ex-wife was my best friend.

Simone brought forward a bowl of hot soup.

"The doctor said you collapsed from work stress and not having frequent meals. I’ll be taking care of you today. You have to finish this bowl of soup."

As she said this, the door of the ward opened.

Zachary first glanced at Simone before looking at me.

"I didn’t know you were unwell last night."

This was Zachary’s attempt at an apology.

I did not acknowledge it.

Simone scooped up a spoonful of the soup and blew on it before bringing it to my mouth.

"Zachary made this himself. It’s garlic and spinach soup. You’ll feel so much better once you have it."

"I don’t want any."

Zachary’s expression became chilly.

"Don’t be rude, Helena. Simone isn’t obligated to take care of you."

I looked at him and shot back, "I’m allergic to garlic. Didn’t you two know that?"

Zachary was stunned.

Simone’s hand froze in midair for a second. Then, she smiled warmly and tried to mediate the situation. "Don’t be mad, Helena. I’ll buy you some soup from the cafeteria."

Zachary followed behind her. "Rest for now, then. I’m going out for a smoke."

The door clicked shut.

I ripped the needle from the back of my hand, and a bead of blood rolled down my finger.

Pushing open the ward door, I heard crying coming from the emergency hallway.

"After I saw your text, I found this in the lamp. I’ve been wearing it ever since."I looked down and stared at the ring. Back then, Zachary had not wanted to make our relationship public. I agreed, but I was very disappointed. There was no trace of me in his social media. That was why I wanted to use something else to signify that he was mine. But I did not need that anymore. "So what? This ring means nothing anymore," I said calmly."It does mean something!"Zachary frantically stepped forward, moving to touch me. But then, he put his hand down. "You gave me this ring. You must have been looking forward to me wearing it so much when you bought it. I’m sorry. I ruined everything. I really regret it. Don’t leave me, okay, Helena? Give me a chance to make things up."He started crying. In my memory, I had only ever seen him cry twice. Both times, this had occurred in front of Simone. I never thought that he would reveal such a sad and despairing side of himself to me.

A breeze blew, scattering the fallen leaves on the ground. I took a step back, crackling the dry leaves underfoot. "What are you doing here?""I’m here looking for you."Zachary stepped forward, closing the distance between us. His red-rimmed eyes never moved from my person."Are you doing well? I’ve been awful. I miss you so much."A frown marred my face. He kept speaking. "I’ve broken up with Simone. Look." Worried that I would not believe him, he took a divorce agreement from his pocket. "I’ve finally gotten my feelings straight, and it’s all thanks to the text you scheduled in advance. Will you come home with me and start over?"His last sentence was said very tentatively and had a hint of pleading in it. I was silent. Zachary quickly added, "But it’s fine if you don’t! I can stay here. Let’s never be apart again, Helena, alright?"He reached out, wanting to hug me, but the moment before he would touch me, Isaac stopped him."Get away from my girlfriend."Is

(1st POV)Fall in Malbonin was somewhat dry. Both sides of the Yalec River were lined with acacia trees. Being back here, I had an unusual sense of peace. I thought that I would feel sad and get lost in the pain of losing someone who loved me. But that did not happen at all. The only time I felt an inexplicable pang of sorrow was the moment I saw the remains of the embryo.I lived peacefully the rest of the time. I had blocked all of Zachary’s and Simone’s social media accounts and cut them out of my life completely. Occasionally, when I talked with friends back home, they would talk about what happened. I pieced only things together through their words and some snippets from the internet. Zachary and Simone had been planning a wedding ceremony, and the invitations had all been sent out. But then, for some reason, they broke up suddenly, and it was all a mess. Simone had been hit very hard by this and tried to seek him out at his company to get back together with

As Simone spoke, tears started to fall. "You’re in love with her, aren’t you, Zachary? It’s only because of me that you’re not looking for her, right? If that’s the case, I can leave. I won’t bother the both of you anymore."In his panic, Zachary pulled Simone into his embrace. "No, that’s not true. You’re the only one I love."It took a long time for him to talk Simone down. As the sky started to lighten, Simone finally went back to sleep, but there were still tears in her eyes. Zachary quietly got out of bed and poured himself a glass of ice water. After spending all night awake, his brain felt like a tightly strung wire.He rubbed his temples and sat on the couch. "What is it, Zachary? You look like you’re in pain."Zachary suddenly heard Helena’s voice. He whipped his head around and saw Helena in pajamas and looking at him worriedly. "Are you tired from work? Let me give you a massage."She got up and walked behind Zachary. Her cool fingers rubbed at his temples

(3rd POV)Zachary’s fingers were trembling as he thought about how he could explain. He finally managed to find the words. After typing out a few hundred words, he hit send. The message failed to send. Zachary’s mind went empty for a long moment. Then, he clicked onto Helena’s Facebook page. She was someone who loved recording things for posterity. However, Zachary found that he could not access her account at all. Finally, Zachary realized that Helena had blocked him. In the year they had been together, Helena had never done that despite their fights. Zachary could not describe what he was currently feeling. Was he sad? Not really. He even felt a little bit like he had been freed. He and Simone would not need to hide anymore. He also did not have to face that kind of pressure anymore. From then on, it would be just him and Simone. They could go back to how things were in the past. As Zachary thought about all this, he started to smile. When Simone found

When I got to the police station, I found Zachary comforting Simone. He had a few scratches on his face, and his black coat was covered in dirt. When he saw me, panic flashed across his features. A female police officer came over and spoke to me professionally. "Ms. Carson was being harassed by some hooligans on the street. There was an altercation when Mr. Guzman stepped in. "The hooligan in the lead was knocked unconscious and has been sent to the hospital. He is awake now and is pressing charges."I looked toward the bedraggled-looking Zachary and felt my heart twist. Three months ago, someone had been stalking and harassing me. After finding out about it, Zachary did not show any reaction on his face. He only said, "Make sure to make a police report if it happens again."It seemed that Zachary would abandon all rationality to protect someone in that position, given that someone was Simone. After paying the fine, we left. I had only bent over to retie my shoelaces fo
