Chapter 1

Matthew's POV

"Mr. Matthew, we're almost at Ms. Ruppert's house. Mr. Fred has prepared the flowers for you. Did you bring them?"

"Flowers? What flowers?" I slowly opened my eyes and saw my butler, Gary Mitchell, looking at me with concern.

"Today is the day you and Ms. Ruppert start college. Didn't you say you wanted to bring her favorite jasmine?" Gary asked.

I looked down at my body, and it finally hit me.

I'd been reborn! I'd gone back to the day I was supposed to pick up Shannon and start college with her at Rocchi University. I'd forgotten the jasmine at home because I'd been in such a hurry to see her.

Gary had already turned the car around without me having to tell him. He knew I'd want him to go back for the flowers.

If Shannon liked something, I'd get it for her. I'd done that for her countless times over the years.

We had grown up together and had always been close. In everyone's eyes, she was my future wife, and they assumed she'd be more than willing to marry me.

But they were only half right. What Shannon and I shared couldn't compare to the love she had for Charles Rice, who came from a poor family.

Our families had been close for generations. In fact, her family had only become what it was because of my family's support. She cared deeply about her parents' wishes, so she had no choice but to break things off with Charles.

At our wedding, the officiant asked Shannon if she was willing to marry me. Instead of answering, she looked at me with red-rimmed eyes and said, "Are you happy now? I'm stuck with you for the rest of my life."

The wedding went ahead smoothly, but I still felt like the fool in their love story.

During our ten years of marriage, Shannon never once let me touch her. The closest we'd ever been was when I held her in my arms and jumped from the sixth floor, breaking her fall.

Even when I was dying, she couldn't bring herself to say anything just to make me feel better.

Now that I had another chance at life, I saw it as an opportunity to make different choices.

Since forced love never bears sweet fruit, I'll let it go. My previous life had been painful enough. This time, I just wanted a happy life.

I patted Gary on the shoulder. "Gary, don't go back. Just take me to the train station. I'm going to Belham University."

"Sure. I'll drive faster—wait, what?"

The car came to a sudden stop. Luckily, I'd already grabbed the handle.

Gary apologized repeatedly, then asked, "Mr. Matthew, did I hear you right? You're going to Belham University? What about Ms. Ruppert?"

Rocchi University was here in Varmont, so it was an easy drive, but Belham University was far enough away that taking the high-speed train made more sense.

"Yeah, Gary. I've made up my mind. I want to go to Belham University. Shannon can get a cab and go to Rocchi on her own."

Fragments of a voice drifted through the darkness."Matthew! I want you to remember me forever! But in the end, it was all just a dream.""Matthew, goodbye. I hope you find a girl who loves you more.""Matthew, please… don't forget me."I jolted awake, the voice already fading from my memory. The other side of the bed was neat and untouched, and only one toothbrush had been unwrapped by the sink. Everything suggested that I'd been alone in the hotel room.I held my head and muttered, "Had I lost my mind? Why did I come to a hotel alone and drink this much? But I remember someone coming to the hotel with me."I racked my brain, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't remember a thing. When I asked the front desk, they told me I had checked in alone the night before.Back on campus, the day was full of youthful energy.During class, I glanced at the empty seat beside me and asked Keira, "Do you remember if someone used to sit next to me?"She laughed. "There used to be a chu

Matthew's POVAfter that, I never said anything like it again. I couldn't believe Shannon had actually cooked something for me now.I suddenly noticed that she looked a little pale. Before I knew it, she'd brought the spoon to my lips. I instinctively pulled away and shoved her hand aside. The lunchbox slipped from her hand. She stumbled back and fell, scraping her palm on a stone.I fought the urge to help her up. Without even looking at her, I said coldly, "I'm going to have lunch with Eric. Bye."The best way to make someone give up was to reject them outright. That was something she had taught me herself."Matthew, I know you've been reborn too. Can't we just talk things out?"I stopped in my tracks. I wasn't surprised that she knew I'd been reborn. I'd suspected as much when she shouted those words from the Cadillac."The past is in the past. There's nothing left for us to talk about."I paused briefly before adding, "And if you're here to apologize, don't bother. Leaving

Matthew's POVI was sure Shannon still couldn't let go of Charles. Even if we married again, what would be the point?I'd have to spend the rest of my life stuck in a loveless marriage. We'd end up resenting each other. And I'd live with the humiliation of knowing she still loved another man.I wasn't going to let the same thing happen a second time. And I certainly wasn't going to give the same woman another chance to hurt me."Shannon, please find a seat." Professor Nash broke the awkward silence.Unlike the other students, she knew that my dad had just donated ten million dollars to the school. She couldn't afford to embarrass either the donor's son or the girl my dad had personally recommended.I just hoped that Shannon wouldn't sit next to me or get in the way of my studies.Unfortunately, things didn't go as I'd hoped. The guy sitting to my left couldn't resist her charm. One soft "Hey, handsome", and he gladly gave up his seat.Shannon spent the entire class doing nothin

  • I Died Saving Her, Then I Ran First   Chapter 5

Matthew's POVMaybe she'd finally come to her senses and wanted to make it up to me after I'd saved her in our previous life. She'd always treated me coldly, but I never wanted her dead. All I wanted was to go our separate ways. At 130 miles per hour, the smallest mistake could kill her.I took out my phone to call her but hesitated. I didn't want anything more to do with her, and I couldn't risk distracting her while she was driving. In the end, I put my phone away. Police cars were already closing in, and the Cadillac, pushed far past its limits, was starting to smoke. It gradually slowed until it disappeared from sight. The passengers gradually returned to their seats, though they kept talking about it.I put on my headphones to block out the noise around me, pulled the window shades down, and closed my eyes.A Cadillac might be able to catch up to a high-speed train, but it could never win back a heart that had already moved on.Whether Shannon had truly changed her mind or

  • I Died Saving Her, Then I Ran First   Chapter 4

Matthew's POV"Shannon kept calling me as she drove. Her last message sat in the chat window, a red exclamation mark beside it, and it stung.I hadn't answered the first couple of calls. She told herself that I'd just missed them, not that I was ignoring her.But when the final call went straight to a message saying my phone was turned off, Shannon finally broke down in tears. She floored the gas pedal, speeding toward the train station as angry drivers honked and cursed around her. She had a bad feeling that if she couldn't see me, everything between us would be over. The drive normally took 30 minutes, but she made it there in just ten. However, she was too late. A staff member told her the train to Belham University had already left.Just then, my dad called her. Gary had already filled him in on everything."Shannon, I don't know what got into that idiot. Just head back for now. I'll talk some sense into him later. He likes you so much, after—"Shannon cut him off. "Fred,

Matthew's POVCharles thought that Shannon hadn't heard him, so he repeated himself and held out the bouquet. She took a step back and kept a polite smile on her face. "Thanks, Charles, but I can't accept the flowers. My boyfriend will be here to pick me up soon."The bouquet slipped from Charles' hand and hit the ground. It was the first time he had ever heard Shannon admit that I was her boyfriend.Helen couldn't help asking, "Shannon, I thought you said you didn't like Matthew. What's going on?"Shannon simply shook her head and looked at Charles. "Sorry you came all this way, but Matthew will be here any minute. You should go. I don't want him to get the wrong idea."Charles looked lost for a moment, then smiled. "Shannon, you probably don't know this yet, but Matthew isn't coming. He texted me to come pick you up."Shannon froze. "That's impossible. He loves me more than anything. Why would he tell you to do that?"Everyone in our circle knew how crazy I was about her and
