Chapter 2

Penulis: Eirlys
I floated in the air, watching Dad carefully tuck the velvet box with the pink diamond into his pocket. Just as he was leaving, his eyes fell on a slightly smaller yellow diamond necklace nearby. I'll take that one too, he said abruptly.

I followed him back to the Alpha Estate. It was brilliantly lit with warm, golden light—nothing like the cold, dark apartment Mom and I lived in. I drifted inside.

The hallways were lined with photos of Maya. Maya giggling on his shoulders, Maya running on the lawn in expensive princess dresses, Dad gently kissing Maya's forehead.

I stared at them with envy. If Dad and I had just one picture together, I would have cherished it for the rest of my life.

Daddy! Maya threw herself into his arms.

Slow down, my little princess. Dad caught her easily, the coldness in his face melting into pure adoration.

Maya wrapped her arms around Charles's neck. Daddy, where's my present? You promised me the prettiest birthday gift ever!

Of course. When has Daddy ever lied to you? Dad smiled, pulling the velvet box from his pocket.

Maya screamed with excitement when she saw the necklace. Dad just watched her with a loving smile. He even carried her into his study, letting her play while he handled pack business. Even when she wrecked his organized bookshelves, he just offered an adoring smile. When high-ranking wolves came in to report, he proudly declared, This is my daughter, the heir to the Crescent Moon Pack.

I stared, numb. So this was how he treated his real daughter.

I remembered the one and only time I had entered his study. I just wanted to give him a piece of candy I had saved. I accidentally knocked a pen off his desk. His eyes had turned to ice. He stood up abruptly and scolded me, Who told you to come in here and make a mess? Clumsy brat, get out!

Just then, some pack officials had come in for a meeting. Dad grabbed my collar, roughly shoved me behind the heavy curtains, and hissed, Keep your mouth shut. Not a sound. Don't let anyone know I have such a shameful daughter!

I hid behind those suffocating curtains for two hours, terrified to even breathe. My tears soaked my shirt, but I didn't dare make a peep.

Daddy, what's this? Maya's voice pulled me back to the present.

She was pointing at a dusty woven bracelet on the bookshelf. I had given him that. For my fifth birthday, my grandmother—the only person who ever loved me—had carefully braided it from wolf hair and leather as a protection charm. After she passed away, it was my only comfort. I gave it to Dad because I wanted him to be safe, so he wouldn't suddenly leave me like Grandma did.

He had just tossed it in the corner and never wore it once, but I had still been happy he kept it.

Daddy, I want this!! Maya demanded, acting as if the world belonged to her.

"No... please don't!"

I lunged forward to snatch it away, but my hands just phased through the wooden cabinet. I could only scream helplessly, Daddy! Please! Don't give it to her!

He couldn't hear me. His gaze lingered on the dusty bracelet for a second. That's...

Then he shook his head, brushing it off. Go ahead and play with it. It's just a piece of useless junk.

Back at the Estate, Dad became even more silent and withdrawn. No matter how much Maya threw tantrums or cried, he ignored her.It wasn't until Cassandra slammed a bond-severing agreement onto his desk that he finally spoke, his voice dead. You're leaving?Cassandra crossed her arms, a mocking smirk on her red lips. Just sign it. I'm taking my shares and Maya.Charles didn't have the energy to argue. He nodded and reached for the pen. Cassandra scoffed and turned to order the maids to pack. That was when Maya dropped her sweet, innocent act. Displaying a viciousness that didn't belong on a five-year-old's face, she sneered, Father. Actually, I probably shouldn't even call you that.I cut up that trashy bracelet on purpose. I just hate that little bastard Eliza. Anything that belongs to her makes me sick. Besides, Mommy says I don't even have your blood. Didn't you ever notice my scent doesn't smell like yours at all? Mommy and I are taking the money to find my real dad now. With a smug

The pack medical examiner read the cold report. It stated that I died of a severe rejection reaction caused by the wolfsbane. Although there were traces of the antidote, long-term, repeated use had built up a fatal resistance. In the end, my inner wolf was literally destroyed, and I died in excruciating agony. The Enforcer Captain looked up, his tone severe. Ms. Valerie, did you repeatedly force Eliza to consume wolfsbane before her passing?Dad's eyes widened in sheer horror. He grabbed his head and crouched on the floor in agony. How... she was really poisoned. I always thought she was just faking it to trick me...Mom's face drained of all color. Because that very morning, to force Dad to come see me, she had forcefully shoved the poison down my throat.I hadn't even fully woken up when Valerie dragged me out of bed. Her eyes were manic. I need Charles to come back! He hasn't seen me in a week!Seeing the poisoned cookie in her hand, I snapped awake. I shrank back in terror, struggl

For the next few days, Charles locked himself in my princess room.Luna Cassandra finally lost her patience. Seeing Charles ignore Maya's crying outside the door and completely ice her out, she exploded. She stood in the hallway, pounding on the door, her words vicious. What the hell is wrong with you?! The brat is gone! I asked if you wanted to claim her back then, and you agreed to ditch her. Now you're playing the bleeding-heart father and scaring Maya!Charles didn't answer. A few moments later, I heard heavy footsteps—Cassandra storming off in a rage. Behind the door, Charles began to weep silently, agonizing sobs shaking his frame. He had visibly lost a lot of weight. He punched the wall hard, muttering to himself. It was my fault. No matter how crazy Valerie was, it had nothing to do with Eliza. I should have brought her to the Estate ages ago and raised her right, instead of tossing her aside because I thought she was corrupted. When she was first born... I loved her so much...

It was the only photo I had with my dad, taken right after I was born. In it, he was smiling brightly, his eyes full of hope for my new life. But later, for power and status, he mated with Cassandra, and she gave him another daughter. After that, Dad never smiled at me like that again.Mom's mental state was highly unstable back then. My grandmother, terrified she might do something awful to me, took me away. It wasn't until Grandma died of an illness that Mom brought me back to this freezing apartment. On my first day back, Mom beat and cursed at me. Her eyes held nothing but pure resentment. I knew she didn't love me.From then on, I looked forward to seeing Dad. Because of that photo Grandma left me. She used to say, "Your Daddy loves you. Look how happy he is in the picture." So I firmly believed that Dad had once wanted me, that he loved me.That yellowed photo became my only anchor. I thought if I was just a good girl, if I just saw him a little more, he would eventually take me

My broken body lay lifeless on the living room floor. The overwhelming stench of death filled the air, gagging everyone. Thanks to the wolfsbane, I could only imagine how severely the flesh beneath my clothes had festered. The neighbors who had peeked inside gasped in absolute horror.Charles stood completely stunned. Then, he strode over and nudged my body with his dress shoe. Eliza, stop playing dead. Get up. People are staring.I didn't react. But his kick moved me just enough to reveal the message I had written on the floor in my own blood right before I died."Daddy, the medicine didn't work. It hurts so much. I really didn't lie to you."The letters were jagged and messy, a testament to the unimaginable agony I was in when I wrote them.Charles stared at the bloody words, his pupils trembling. A moment later, as if completely blind to the stench of decay, his knees buckled. He dropped to the floor beside my body. Like he was coaxing a fragile newborn pup, his voice trembled.Eliz

Dad hung up, his face thunderous. Taking a deep breath to suppress his rage, he dialed Mom's number. She answered, sounding pleasantly surprised. You finally called! Today is crucial for Maya. I don't have time for your insanity.A stunt? Valerie sneered. Believe what you want. But let me tell you, I'm not going back there. She's your daughter too. He smashed his phone onto the deck in a fit of rage.Floating in the air, I watched his fury, feeling nothing but a profound, hollow sadness.
