Chapter 2

Dottie
With Theodore and Lily coaxing me, I ended up sleeping in an actual bed that night, which left me deeply unsettled.

That uneasy feeling turned out to be right on the money. The next day, Nolan kicked my bedroom door open.

"Luna! Look at what you did!"

I instinctively tried to crawl toward the trash can, but he grabbed me and slammed me down on the bed.

His expression was stormy, and he raised a hand to slap me.

"Don't you dare play innocent with me. Mom and Dad might buy it, but I don't.

"If you hadn't handed Bella that bouquet on purpose at the banquet this morning, why would she be in the ICU right now with a pollen allergy attack?"

Damian gently caught Nolan's hand before it could land on my face.

"Mr. Nolan, Ms. Luna sent the dog to attend the banquet in her place today. She said she didn't feel she deserved to be present at such a lavish event."

Nolan froze for a second, then raised his voice even louder.

"Then she must have put the cake with flower petals Bella's allergic to onto her plate at lunch. That's what triggered the reaction!"

Damian calmly moved his hand back to his side. "Ms. Luna ate lunch with the dog. She said she didn't feel she deserved to sit at the table with the rest of the family."

Nolan gritted his teeth. "Then she must've snuck those flowers into Bella's bedroom this afternoon on purpose, and that's what put her in the ICU!"

Damian started to calmly reply again. "Ms. Luna was..."

"Shut up!" Nolan snapped, cutting him off.

He whipped around to glare at me, undisguised disgust churning in his eyes.

"Luna, I don't care if you're actually crazy or just faking it. You'd better remember this. In this family, Bella is the one we've chosen. And you? You've never deserved any of it."

He stormed out and slammed the door behind him, the sound echoing through the room.

I stared blankly at the space where he'd been, his words looping over and over in my head.

I didn't deserve anything.

That made the eighth time I'd heard those words. It also marked my eighth time being reborn.

The first time, it was because Bella's dog went missing. I got locked in a dog cage as punishment and dragged behind a car.

Right as my consciousness was fading, I heard her voice drift down from somewhere high above me, laughing and teasing.

"All of this is mine. Some people are just born to be dogs, not people."

The second time, it was because dirt from my clothes had gotten on her bedroom floor. My punishment was being hung upside down outside the window.

By the time the rain and blood were falling together, all she did was look down at me and curl her lip.

"So what if you're back? You still don't deserve to walk on this floor. If you ask me, hanging out there suits you just fine. At least you won't be dirtying up the air in the house."

The third time, the fourth time... every time, I tried to change things.

I tried winning everyone over. I tried fighting back. I tried running.

At first, it seemed to work. But no matter what I did, it always ended with those same words—I didn't deserve anything.

Every time I opened my eyes again, I was right back here. No matter what I did, I couldn't escape it.

I looked at Damian, confused but sincere. "Am I still not putting myself low enough? Why is everyone still so unhappy with me?"

Damian asked respectfully, "Ms. Luna, why would you need to lower yourself at all?"

I blinked and answered quietly. "Because I already know I don't deserve anything."

I leaned in a little closer and lowered my voice. "And besides, if I don't know my place, I'll die."

Damian looked up at me, and something like confusion flickered across his eyes.

After that day, my parents came knocking on my door almost every single day.Every time, they brought their whole hearts full of apology with them. They stood outside and called my name, over and over.I opened the door. But faced with their red-rimmed eyes, I just stood there. I didn't say a single word. When Lily reached out to touch me, I stepped back. Her hand froze in midair, like it had been nailed there. The silence stretched on for a long time. Finally, Theodore spoke first, his voice rough. "Luna, we...we won't push you. Whenever you're ready to see us, we'll be here."Lily nodded, tears spilling down her face. She wiped them away quickly and forced a stiff smile."I made soup for you. I left it by the door. Just... remember to drink it, okay?"They held each other up as they turned and made their way slowly toward the stairs, one step at a time.Their backs were hunched, like they'd aged years in an instant. As I watched them leave, I suddenly thought of something

Nolan caught up to Bella in a few strides. He grabbed her arm and threw her hard back into the middle of the living room. The suitcase burst open on impact, clothes spilling across the floor.Bella barely had time to react before the fall left her dazed and reeling. She braced herself with her arms and tried to get up, coming face to face with three people who looked both familiar and like total strangers. She'd never seen our parents and Nolan look at her like this before.Lily's nails dug into her own palms, her eyes bloodshot. "You killed our Luna seven times. Seven times! And this fire almost took her life again!"Nolan crouched down and stared at Bella, his eyes cold as ice."You were packing to run. That means you already knew you couldn't hide what you did anymore."Bella's eyes widened, the color slowly draining from her face.At first she'd thought it was just the fire that had come to light. But now it hit her, all at once.It wasn't just the fire. They remembered e

When I opened my eyes again, the room was completely silent."Ms. Luna is awake," Damian spoke up immediately, right on cue as always.I looked at him and blinked. He brought a glass of water to my lips, then said calmly, "During the eight days you were unconscious, quite a bit changed around here. I think you should be brought up to speed."Mr. Nolan has been asking me every three days why I exist only in this particular lifetime. Sir and Madam keep repeating the same thing over and over, that they thought they'd already died in that fire."As for Ms. Bella..."Damian paused, as if choosing his words carefully."She had quite a fright. These past few days, she's been telling anyone who'll listen that someone's come to collect a debt from her. She never says exactly who, but based on what I've observed, she means you."He leaned in slightly, his tone flat. "Oh, and one more thing. I've handed over all the footage from that tiny camera on your collar to your family. They should

Inside the burning house, the smoke was thick and acrid, the heat almost strong enough to knock a person flat.Nolan kicked open a half-collapsed door and finally spotted a small, curled-up figure inside the cage against the wall, already scorched black with soot. The blurred memories of who knew how many lifetimes crashed head-on into the present. In that instant, it felt like something had seized his heart in a crushing grip."Luna!"He lunged forward, reaching into the cage to pull the figure out.The person inside stirred, as if jolted awake, and slowly lifted her head. The moment I saw him, undisguised terror flooded my eyes. I flinched back hard.Nolan's hand froze in midair. Something seemed to lodge in his throat, and he couldn't force out a single word."Ms. Luna, it's me." Damian's voice came from behind him, calm and steady. He'd followed Nolan in at some point, unnoticed. Now, he crouched down and reached a hand into the cage. The terror in my eyes slowly receded

Damian was the first to react. "Where is Ms. Luna?"That finally snapped Theodore and Lily out of their daze.Lily scanned the scene over and over, but couldn't find that small, familiar figure anywhere. She grabbed Theodore's arm without thinking, her voice trembling. "Luna... didn't make it out?"Theodore opened his mouth, but nothing came out. It took him a long moment before he could turn to Nolan, his voice full of disbelief. "Nolan! You left Luna in there?!"Nolan didn't answer. He stared blankly at the flames ahead, and a low buzzing filled his head.Suddenly, an image flashed before him.Thick smoke, waves of heat, and a small hand, coated in ash, gripping his sleeve with everything it had.It was me when I was just seven years old.I'd been a full head shorter than him. Still, I somehow dragged him out of a burning building. The instant I used the last of my strength to shove him to safety, a collapsing beam had buried me instead. He remembered screaming my name unt
