Chapter 4

作者: Peachy
The turning point came faster than I expected.

Less than a week after Derek left, his father, our pack's Alpha, had a heart attack after a high-intensity patrol. He was rushed to the medical center.

His condition was critical. He needed expensive heart bypass surgery immediately.

His mother panicked.

She reached out to Derek through their mind link, again and again, but was met with complete silence.

Her hands trembled as she switched to his phone, dialing his number repeatedly.

All thirty-plus attempts to reach him vanished into the void.

There was nothing. Fighting back tears, she stormed into the family business demanding to know what was going on.

The answer they gave her chilled her to the bone.

Derek had requested an extended leave, and had given his subordinates explicit instructions not to tell me or his parents.

He had completely vanished.

His mother's face went pale. She was about to report him to the pack's enforcers as a missing person.

That was my moment. I stumbled up to her, letting the tears flow.

"Mother, I... I think Derek tricked me!"

I put on a show of a woman pushed to her breaking point, and I laid out the whole "fake bond-breaking" scam.

My voice was shattered, every word soaked in hurt and despair.

"Mother," I sobbed, nearly fainting. "He... he also took all our liquid assets. He said he needed it for the trial... Father needs money for his surgery now, what are we going to do?!"

"That bastard!"

My mother-in-law was shaking with rage, her knuckles white. Then, her eyes rolled back, and she fainted, falling straight backward.

I caught her just in time, fighting to hide my ecstatic joy. I told the doctor calmly, "I'll pay for the surgery. Please arrange for the best healers immediately."

When she woke up in her hospital bed, I was sitting right there, my eyes red and swollen—I'd secretly rubbed them with a bit of onion—looking exhausted and pitiful.

Her gaze immediately fell on my empty wrist and my equally bare neck.

The heirloom necklace she had given me—the one made of moonstone and mithril, the symbol of a Luna—was gone.

"Elena, child, your necklace?" she asked, her voice hoarse.

I instinctively pulled my hand back and lowered my head.

I let my hair hide the cunning glint in my eyes, showing her only a sad, fragile profile.

"Father's surgery was more important," I choked out. "Derek took all our money... I had to... I had to sell the necklace on the black market. It should be enough to cover things for a while."

I looked up, took her cold hand in mine, and gazed at her with tear-filled eyes. "Mother, don't worry. Even though Derek abandoned us, I'll never forget how good you and Father have been to me. I'll never leave you. I'll take care of you for the rest of my life."

My mother-in-law couldn't hold it in any longer. Tears streamed down her face.

She clutched my hand, crying for a long time, and finally, she seemed to make a decision.

"Elena, my dear child, we're so sorry. We failed to raise that scoundrel right!"

She wiped her tears, her eyes becoming incredibly firm.

"From now on, you are our daughter. We'll just pretend... we never had a son named Derek."

I was celebrating inside, but on my face, I showed only shocked, grateful disbelief.

"Mother, how could I...? In my heart, you and Father have always been like my real parents."

The first battle was for their hearts. And I had won.

When I said I would handle it, I wasn't just trying to comfort my mother-in-law.From the first day I saw Derek again, I had hired the best private investigator in the galaxy to look into everything he'd been up to while he was away.A few days later, a detailed report landed in my encrypted inbox. It turned out that Derek's little fling from back then, that Omega named Lily, wasn't an intern at all. She was a corporate spy from a rival family. After they went abroad, Lily quickly cleaned out Derek's bank accounts, then set a trap that got him beaten half to death by a vicious local Rogue pack. He was stuck in a hospital for almost a year.So his story about "having an accident" wasn't a complete lie.By the time he got out of the hospital, his visa had expired and he was flat broke. To survive and hide from the rival pack that was still after him, he had to shack up with the sister of his boss at the restaurant where he worked—a Rogue she-wolf who weighed over three hundred pounds and

Because he'd been removed from the pack registry, Derek had no official status.Combined with the attempted assault, he was immediately detained by the Enforcers. As he was led out of the interrogation room, his face ashen, he ran right into his parents, who had rushed over as soon as they heard. His mother didn't say a word. She just marched up and gave him several hard slaps across the face. His father used his cane like a whip, hitting Derek so much he spun in place like a top.The nearby Enforcers tried to step in, but they couldn't stop them."Dad! Mom! Look at me, I'm your son!" Derek shrieked in despair, scurrying away while covering his head. His father, a man who had been a perfect gentleman his entire life, hawked and spat right on him."I have no son as disgusting as you!"His mother pulled the official certificate of removal, signed by the council of elders, from her handbag and shoved it in Derek's face. "Read it and weep! My son died years ago!"Derek stared at the paper

"If you don't want anyone to know, don't do it in the first place."I looked down on him, my gaze as cold as a poisoned blade. "You should have thought of this day back when you were so pleased with yourself for being clever enough to abandon us.""Now that you're done playing around and can't make it on your own, you suddenly remember me?"I curled my lip into a sneer. "What makes you think we would all just wait for you? Derek, take a good long look in the mirror. Look at the pathetic mess you are now. Do you really think you're worthy?"Every word I said was a sharp knife, stripping away the last shreds of his pathetic pride.Without warning, he dropped to his knees in front of me, blocking my path with his arms."Elena, I was wrong, I was so wrong," he sobbed, a pathetic coward who had lost all his dignity. "I lost my mind back then, I was a beast! Please, I'm begging you, just give me one more chance."He was crying miserably."My parents don't want me, my daughter doesn't know me

Derek's attempt to get help online backfired, and he became a laughingstock among all the packs. He must have hit rock bottom. That evening, just as I was leaving the office, he darted out from the shadows."Elena," he said, grabbing my arm. His eyes were a complicated mix of emotions. "We need to talk."I glanced at the curious stares from my coworkers. I had no desire for my family's dirty laundry to become office gossip.I shook his hand off. "This isn't the place," I said coldly.I found a coffee shop nearby. It just so happened to be across the street from the Enforcers' headquarters. The owner was a friend of Marcus's, a retired Alpha from the special forces. It wasn't that I was afraid of Derek. I just didn't want any trouble. The second we walked in, Derek saw the heavily guarded building across the street with the Enforcers' flag flying high. The color drained from his face."I don't think we have anything to talk about," I said, sitting down and getting straight to it. "We br

In the end, on his own parents’ orders, Derek was dragged out by security like a dead dog.As they hauled him away, he pointed a finger at me from across the hall, screaming curses. He called me a liar, a thief, and threatened to report me to the Enforcers and expose me on the werewolf web.I just stood beside Marcus, arms crossed, watching him with a cold stare, as if he were nothing more than a pathetic clown. After that little interruption at the engagement party, it took a while for my parents-in-law to catch their breath. They turned to me, their faces full of apology."Elena, dear, don't listen to a word that worthless creature says. In our hearts, he died a long time ago. Now, you are our only daughter."My daughter ran over and made a little fist, pouting playfully. "Mommy, I'll protect you! If that bad man comes back, I'll get Uncle Marcus to beat him up for you!"Marcus looked at us all, full of regret. "Father, Mother, Elena, this is my fault. I thought since it was just the

  • I Don't Need Fake Matebond   Chapter 9

In the sixth year of Derek’s disappearance, our family’s luxury goods group went public. As the largest individual shareholder, I became unimaginably wealthy overnight. At the same time, Marcus and I were getting engaged. It was going to be a monumental alliance, a union of two powerful families. He cared for my daughter, and even for Derek’s parents, as if they were his own.The engagement party was a dazzling affair, the hall filled with glamorous guests, their laughter and the clinking of glasses echoing in the air. I was wearing a gown made by elven artisans, covered in diamonds, and holding onto Marcus’s strong arm as we accepted everyone’s blessings. My parents-in-law and my daughter sat at the head table, beaming from ear to ear, their eyes shining with happiness. We had formed a new, perfect family.Just as the ceremony reached its peak, when Marcus and I were about to exchange tokens of our betrothal, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom were thrown open from the outside
