Chapter 1

Author: Peachy
My Alpha mate wanted to ditch me and run off with his lover. He planned to use the "wilderness trial" as an excuse to break our mate bond.

I agreed immediately.

Leaving is easy. But if you regret it and want to come back? Go to hell.

It was midnight, and on the anonymous board of the werewolf forum, a post was blowing up.

The title practically burned my eyes.

[How do I get my mate to break our bond? I want to be with my destined true love, but I know she'll cling to me and never let go.]

My blood ran cold.

The top-voted reply was just plain evil.

[Tell her that for the future of the pack, you have to go on a lone wolf trial in the wilderness to find a lost ancient power. Say it's the destiny of an Alpha.]

[The ritual requires you to temporarily sever all emotional ties, including the mate bond, to return to your purest, most feral state. She'll agree for the greater good.]

[Then, while you're out having the time of your life with your true love, she'll be an idiot at home, taking care of your parents and your pup.]

I felt sick to my stomach. It was disgusting.

The next day, my Alpha, Derek, came back from his patrol. He was covered in the scent of another she-wolf. Sweet, cloying, and cheap.

He walked straight up to me and said gravely, "Elena, for our future, for the honor of our family, I have to make... a very difficult decision."

He looked at me and recited the lines from the forum, almost word for word.

"We... need to temporarily break our mate bond. For the future of the pack, I have to go on a lone wolf trial in the wilderness and find a lost ancient power."

I stared quietly at his fake, earnest face, the post from last night flashing in my mind.

I choked back the bile rising in my throat and decided to test him.

"What if I say no?" I asked, my voice trembling. "Our daughter is so young, and your parents need us both."

"No!" His rejection was swift and sharp.

His Alpha's dominance flared, so intense the air itself felt heavy.

He immediately realized he'd lost his cool, quickly reining it in and softening his tone.

He placed his hand over mine, trying to soothe me.

"Honey, this trial is crucial for our entire pack. When I come back with that ancient power, our status will be untouchable."

He started painting this grand, empty picture of our future.

"Everything I'm doing, I'm doing it for you, for our family. You'll support me, right, my mate?"

His breath brushed against my cheek, carrying his irresistible Alpha pheromones, trying to calm me, to confuse me.

But all I could smell was the rotten stench of betrayal.

I stayed silent, letting the confidence in his eyes slowly curdle into anxiety.

"Elena, we're only breaking the bond temporarily. Our souls are forever linked," he said, squeezing my hand, continuing his lie. "As soon as I finish the trial, we'll re-establish the bond. I'll make it up to you, I promise."

Trust him?

Once a mate bond is broken before the Elders, it's a permanent separation, witnessed by the Moon Goddess herself.

That last little flicker of sincerity in his eyes had already been devoured by greed and lust.

I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and when I opened them again, they were completely dead.

"Okay," I said softly, my voice so calm it didn't sound like my own. "Derek, I'll do whatever you say."

He let out a huge sigh of relief, the joy practically spilling from his eyes as he pulled me into a tight hug.

"That's great! The sooner, the better. We'll see the Elders tomorrow."

When I said I would handle it, I wasn't just trying to comfort my mother-in-law.From the first day I saw Derek again, I had hired the best private investigator in the galaxy to look into everything he'd been up to while he was away.A few days later, a detailed report landed in my encrypted inbox. It turned out that Derek's little fling from back then, that Omega named Lily, wasn't an intern at all. She was a corporate spy from a rival family. After they went abroad, Lily quickly cleaned out Derek's bank accounts, then set a trap that got him beaten half to death by a vicious local Rogue pack. He was stuck in a hospital for almost a year.So his story about "having an accident" wasn't a complete lie.By the time he got out of the hospital, his visa had expired and he was flat broke. To survive and hide from the rival pack that was still after him, he had to shack up with the sister of his boss at the restaurant where he worked—a Rogue she-wolf who weighed over three hundred pounds and

Because he'd been removed from the pack registry, Derek had no official status.Combined with the attempted assault, he was immediately detained by the Enforcers. As he was led out of the interrogation room, his face ashen, he ran right into his parents, who had rushed over as soon as they heard. His mother didn't say a word. She just marched up and gave him several hard slaps across the face. His father used his cane like a whip, hitting Derek so much he spun in place like a top.The nearby Enforcers tried to step in, but they couldn't stop them."Dad! Mom! Look at me, I'm your son!" Derek shrieked in despair, scurrying away while covering his head. His father, a man who had been a perfect gentleman his entire life, hawked and spat right on him."I have no son as disgusting as you!"His mother pulled the official certificate of removal, signed by the council of elders, from her handbag and shoved it in Derek's face. "Read it and weep! My son died years ago!"Derek stared at the paper

"If you don't want anyone to know, don't do it in the first place."I looked down on him, my gaze as cold as a poisoned blade. "You should have thought of this day back when you were so pleased with yourself for being clever enough to abandon us.""Now that you're done playing around and can't make it on your own, you suddenly remember me?"I curled my lip into a sneer. "What makes you think we would all just wait for you? Derek, take a good long look in the mirror. Look at the pathetic mess you are now. Do you really think you're worthy?"Every word I said was a sharp knife, stripping away the last shreds of his pathetic pride.Without warning, he dropped to his knees in front of me, blocking my path with his arms."Elena, I was wrong, I was so wrong," he sobbed, a pathetic coward who had lost all his dignity. "I lost my mind back then, I was a beast! Please, I'm begging you, just give me one more chance."He was crying miserably."My parents don't want me, my daughter doesn't know me

Derek's attempt to get help online backfired, and he became a laughingstock among all the packs. He must have hit rock bottom. That evening, just as I was leaving the office, he darted out from the shadows."Elena," he said, grabbing my arm. His eyes were a complicated mix of emotions. "We need to talk."I glanced at the curious stares from my coworkers. I had no desire for my family's dirty laundry to become office gossip.I shook his hand off. "This isn't the place," I said coldly.I found a coffee shop nearby. It just so happened to be across the street from the Enforcers' headquarters. The owner was a friend of Marcus's, a retired Alpha from the special forces. It wasn't that I was afraid of Derek. I just didn't want any trouble. The second we walked in, Derek saw the heavily guarded building across the street with the Enforcers' flag flying high. The color drained from his face."I don't think we have anything to talk about," I said, sitting down and getting straight to it. "We br

In the end, on his own parents’ orders, Derek was dragged out by security like a dead dog.As they hauled him away, he pointed a finger at me from across the hall, screaming curses. He called me a liar, a thief, and threatened to report me to the Enforcers and expose me on the werewolf web.I just stood beside Marcus, arms crossed, watching him with a cold stare, as if he were nothing more than a pathetic clown. After that little interruption at the engagement party, it took a while for my parents-in-law to catch their breath. They turned to me, their faces full of apology."Elena, dear, don't listen to a word that worthless creature says. In our hearts, he died a long time ago. Now, you are our only daughter."My daughter ran over and made a little fist, pouting playfully. "Mommy, I'll protect you! If that bad man comes back, I'll get Uncle Marcus to beat him up for you!"Marcus looked at us all, full of regret. "Father, Mother, Elena, this is my fault. I thought since it was just the

In the sixth year of Derek’s disappearance, our family’s luxury goods group went public. As the largest individual shareholder, I became unimaginably wealthy overnight. At the same time, Marcus and I were getting engaged. It was going to be a monumental alliance, a union of two powerful families. He cared for my daughter, and even for Derek’s parents, as if they were his own.The engagement party was a dazzling affair, the hall filled with glamorous guests, their laughter and the clinking of glasses echoing in the air. I was wearing a gown made by elven artisans, covered in diamonds, and holding onto Marcus’s strong arm as we accepted everyone’s blessings. My parents-in-law and my daughter sat at the head table, beaming from ear to ear, their eyes shining with happiness. We had formed a new, perfect family.Just as the ceremony reached its peak, when Marcus and I were about to exchange tokens of our betrothal, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom were thrown open from the outside
