Chapter 2

Author: Revolving
I zipped the suitcase shut and turned around. When I saw the smug look on Liam's face, I couldn't help bursting into laughter.

"Don't flatter yourself," I said.

I grabbed the suitcase, took aim at his face, and swung it at him with all my strength. It slammed into him hard, making him shout in pain and fall straight onto his ass.

"I'm not that stupid." I pointed at the front door. "Don't forget whose name is on the deed—it's mine. You're the one who needs to get the hell out. Take your crap and get out of my house, now!"

Liam stared at me, his eyes wide with disbelief, as if he were looking at a monster. "Are you nuts, Erica? I paid half the down payment on this place! What gives you the right to kick me out?"

"What gives me the right?" I stared him down, my eyes frosty. "Because you're the one who cheated. You don't get to negotiate with me."

I pulled out my phone and waved it in front of him. "Take a good look. I've been recording ever since I walked through the front door. All that disgusting crap you and Mia did on the couch is right here."

The color drained from his face in an instant. He panicked and lunged for my phone.

I dodged easily and slapped him again. "Don't touch me. You're filthy. If you don't want your life ruined, you'd better grab that bitch and get out of my sight."

Liam pressed a hand to his cheek and glared at me. His eyes were full of fear and the bitter resentment that came with being helpless.

"You're heartless, Erica. You're selfish and vile to the core!" He forced the words out through gritted teeth.

Heartless, huh? Selfish?

He could call me whatever he wanted. As long as I felt good, why would I care if someone else went down in flames?

That was just how I'd always been.

I'd always known exactly what I wanted since I was a kid. I'd never been the kind of "good girl" who swallowed her anger and played nice. I only considered things from my perspective.

Once, back in elementary school, my family was sharing out some fruit. Mom had deliberately picked the biggest slice and given it to my sister, Esther Lodge. Her excuse was half-assed at best—something about Esther being weak.

I hadn't cried or thrown a tantrum. I'd just walked over, picked up the entire fruit plate, and dumped everything straight into the trash.

If I couldn't have something, then no one would.

Mom had gone ballistic. She'd jabbed a finger at me and called me an imbecile.

I'd just looked at her coldly and shot back, "If you wanna play favorites, that's your business. Whether or not I cooperate is mine."

Later, Dad had dragged me out to the balcony for a lecture. He'd puffed himself up and tried to brainwash me with all that crap about how I had to learn to take a loss once in a while. He went all in on guilt-tripping me.

I'd shot down every line he tried, one after another. I hadn't bought a single word of his nonsense.

And from that point on, I'd understood something—other people had the right to decide how they treated me, and I had the exact same right to decide how I treated them. If someone treated me like crap, I would make sure to return the favor.

When I got older, this side of me only became more extreme.

If a friend borrowed money and didn't pay it back, I never hinted or danced around it. I showed up at their door to collect.

If a coworker tried to snatch credit for my work in front of the boss, I called them out on the spot in the conference room and called them out to their face.

If some relative tried to shut me down with that nonsense about how they meant well, I never backed off just because they were older. If they crossed the line, I cussed them out.

My whole philosophy was simple—I wouldn't let anything make me spiral. If I had a grudge, I settled it immediately.

So when it came to picking a boyfriend, my goal had been crystal clear. I looked specifically for someone gentle, easygoing, and endlessly tolerant of me.

Liam had ticked every box.

He really did have a great temper, and he'd always liked trailing after me since we were kids. I'd thought he would always stay that way, always going along with whatever I wanted. I never imagined that deep down, he was an ungrateful snake who dared to hook up with my best friend.

Still, at least we hadn't gotten married yet. It wasn't too late to cut my losses.

After Liam finally vanished from my life, life had been going great for me.The major project I'd just reclaimed was a huge success. The bosses made a snap decision—not only did I get a fat bonus, but I was also promoted to department manager.I went to work and left on time every day, spending my money to spoil myself rotten. On weekends, I got facials and went shopping. My life couldn't have been more comfortable.I was just thinking about where to go for my upcoming vacation when I ran into Esther outside my office building. She'd obviously come specifically to wait for me.She wore a simple dress and stood in the breeze, looking like her usual fragile, gentle self. The moment she saw me, she hurried over and took my hand like it was second nature."Eri." Her voice was soft enough that a gust of wind could've blown it away, and her eyes were full of heartache. "I heard about what happened with Liam… His reputation is ruined now. He can't find a job, and he can't even afford nex

The cops showed up pretty fast and took Liam and me back to the station to give statements. We ended up in a mediation room, where Liam shook like a leaf."Officer, I really didn't take her ring! I swear!" He was so panicked that his eyes turned bloodshot, and he just kept repeating the same thing.I sat across from him with one leg crossed over the other. I said coolly, "I only trust the security footage. It shows that you're the only one who went to my desk, and you're the one who dug through my drawer.""I only went there for the USB—" Liam started, trying to argue."So you admit you stole something from me?" I cut him off.He froze, his face turning a dark, ugly red.To be fair, I didn't have hard evidence that Liam had taken the ring. But he had even less proof that he hadn't. The cameras had clearly caught him in the act, plus he really had stolen my USB drive. He couldn't explain that away.We were at a stalemate for hours. The cops saw that we were getting nowhere. Th

I didn't waste time and turned straight to the admin manager. "Wayne, can you pull up the security footage?"Mr. Johnson nodded grimly.A moment later, the big screen in the conference room switched to the feed from the camera right above my desk.Soon, Liam appeared in the footage. He snuck up to my workstation, looking shifty and sneaky. He glanced around to make sure no one was around, then yanked the black USB drive out of my computer. He shoved it into his pocket and slipped away. The camera captured the entire thing clearly. The conference room instantly exploded."That's low.""He couldn't come up with a proposal on his own, so he stole someone else's and even played the victim."All the comments from our coworkers were like slaps to Liam's face. He panicked, and the cocky attitude he'd had a minute ago vanished. His face turned ashen, and he stammered, trying to defend himself. "M-Mr. Johnson, I… This is all a misunderstanding. I just—""You just borrowed it to take

Liam got the news almost immediately. He called me in a rage, his voice shaking with anger. "Erica, do you really have to take things this far? Do you have to calculate every last cent and leave no room for even a shred of what we had?""Have you just met me?" I let out a cold laugh, my tone indifferent. "I've always been the type to settle scores. If someone wrongs me, I don't let it slide. Since your family insisted on making a scene outside my door, they've gotta deal with the fallout. Don't start talking to me about old feelings. You don't get to."With that, I hung up on him before he could keep yapping.Under my lawyer's nonstop pressure, Liam ran out of options. Afraid this would go on his record and affect his job, he had no choice but to start borrowing money from anyone he could find. After a few days, he wired back every cent I'd spent on him over the years, not a dollar short. The day he passed the transaction record to me, he locked his eyes on me, his gaze full of v

My parents were stunned. When neither of them had an answer, I couldn't be bothered to argue with them anymore. I got up and went to open the door."Look, I've already made up my mind about this. Go home. Stop trying to talk me out of this," I said.My parents saw how firm I was and could only leave with grim expressions. Not long after, the doorbell rang again. This time, it was Mr. and Mrs. Zeller. They were standing outside with broad, ingratiating smiles. It went without saying that they were here to plead for Liam.I ignored them and let the doorbell keep ringing. When I didn't respond, Mr. and Mrs. Zeller started losing patience. Ringing the doorbell turned into pounding on the door, and Mrs. Zeller's voice rang out in the hallway. "Eri, open the door! Don't think you can just keep quiet and pretend that you're not in there!"I still didn't move and just stared coldly at the monitor.Seeing that her usual tricks weren't working on me and knowing I was dead set on cutti

Liam remained silent on the other end of the line.I went on, "Don't be stupid. I'm not giving you that chance."His breathing grew noticeably heavier.I couldn't help letting out a cold laugh. "Besides, you're the one who signed that agreement and willingly gave me the apartment. No one put a gun to your head and made you do it."Liam finally snapped. "But you promised me!"I actually found that funny. "What good is a promise? When we first started dating, you promised you'd never fall in love with another woman. Didn't you still cheat in the end?"He was at a loss for words.Meanwhile, I was running out of patience. "Liam, there's only one person to blame for things ending up the way they are now, and that's you for being brainless."It's your fault for cheating and for failing to keep it in your pants. And you were stupid enough to let me catch you red-handed. If you dared to do it, you should've expected the consequences."The line went silent for a few seconds.I couldn'
