Chapter 2

Autor: Tower Pusher
I sat by the flower bed for a long while.

I did not get up until they exited the restaurant. Everyone was clustered around Michael.

He jogged over and threw his arm over my shoulder.

“Fin! Why’d you sneak off by yourself?”

I instinctively flinched away.

“I was full. I just came out to get some air.”

“Perfect timing.”

He let go of me and glanced back at our parents, who were catching up.

“Mom and Dad need to tell you something.”

My parents looked at each other.

Mom spoke first.

“Fin, actually, your dad and I already filed for divorce before your SATs. We kept it from you so it wouldn’t affect your and Mic’s performance.”

Dad chimed in, “Now that Mic has done so well, we finally feel relieved.

“There are still a few days left before the divorce is finalized. After that, we’ll all go our separate ways.”

There was even a hint of relief in his tone, as if a burden had finally been lifted.

When I heard that, my mind went completely blank.

I was not shocked because my parents were getting divorced.

I had snapped my head toward Michael, and what I saw shocked me.

He was way too calm. It was like he had known all along.

“So...” My voice was shaking a little.

“You all had this planned out from the start. When it comes to things in this family, I’m always the last to find out, aren’t I?”

No one answered me.

Michael grabbed Mom’s arm and whined playfully, “Mom, you promised. Even if you and Dad get divorced, Fin and I are still your baby boys.”

Mom gave his hand a doting pat.

“Of course, sweetie. Come with me, I’ll take you to see the world.”

“No way!” Dad cut in immediately.

“Mic stays with me. My connections and network are way better for his future.”

The two of them tugged at Michael’s sleeves from opposite sides.

It seemed intense, but it was just loud family fun.

Michael swayed left and right as they pulled him. He smiled helplessly with a tinge of smugness.

Even though I was at the center, I felt like a stranger who had wandered into someone else’s family portrait.

“What do you even see me as?” The words came out louder than I meant.

Everyone went quiet for a moment.

Mom frowned and said, “Why are you yelling? Who are you to throw a fit with a score that low?”

Michael quickly stepped in to smooth things over.

“Mom, Fin didn’t do well on the exam, so of course he’s upset. Cut him some slack, alright?”

He turned and patted me on the shoulder as he said, “Don’t worry, Fin. Mom and Dad have always been fair. I’m sure they’ll respect your choice, no matter which one of us you go with.”

He always had a knack for winning people over.

Growing up, when I got bullied at school, he was the one who stood up and spoke for me.

At home, when Mom and Dad neglected me, he was the one who stood up for me so they would pay me some attention, too.

But I finally understood that every time he defended me, it was built on the simple fact that he had already won. Charity, after all, was a luxury of those who already had it.

Brielle also walked over with a frown as she said, “Fin, don’t make such a big deal out of it. Have some dignity.

“Look at Mic. Nothing ever rattles him. You’re the older brother, so you should learn from him.”

I did not think I could.

For as long as I could remember, I could never measure up to him.

I was the older brother only because I came out first during the C-section.

That one accident of birth meant I was supposed to yield to my younger brother when it came to every single matter.

He got the newest backpack every year, while I had to mend my own when it tore.

At dinner, it was always his favorite food on the table. If I got home even ten minutes late, I would only get whatever cold leftovers remained.

When we were young, our parents would walk ahead holding his hand. The moment I bent down to tie my shoe, they would be far ahead.

That distance always felt impossible to close.

So, when our parents finally divorced, it just meant whatever little love they had left for me had all been given to Michael instead.

Of course he would be calm. He had everything.

When I remained silent, Brielle held my hand firmly and said, “Come on, don’t get upset. Worst comes to worst, I’ll take care of you.”

“What are you talking about? That’s my big brother!” Michael swatted her hand away.

“If anyone’s taking care of him, it’s me!”

“Do you have to compete over this too? That’s so overbearing!”

The two of them started shoving and roughhousing again, their laughter piercingly loud in the night air.

Though they seemed to be fighting over me, in truth, neither of them actually wanted me.

“I’m not going with anyone. From now on, I’m on my own.”

When I looked up, everyone had gone ahead.

Michael had already run off into the distance, with Brielle laughing and chasing after him.

My parents had followed along as well.

They bustled noisily toward the same direction, and not a single person looked back at me.

It had always been like that.

In the past, I would always chase them down, even knowing I would only ever be trailing behind.

I was done trying to keep up.

Everyone at the scene fell silent for a moment. No one had expected things to unfold like that.I took a step back and put some distance between us.“Brielle, if you keep this up, I’ll report you to the school and make sure you can’t even finish your studies here.”Just as she was about to say something, two uniformed security guards emerged from the crowd.“Miss, gatherings and disturbances are not allowed here. Please leave immediately.”Brielle was grabbed by the arms and dragged out.She struggled and turned back to call my name, but her voice was drowned out by the murmurs of the crowd.I stood there as the crowd slowly dispersed, leaving the space in a mess. Not far away, only one person remained. It was Grace. She stood with her arms crossed. I had no idea how long she had been there or how much she had overheard. The streetlamp above her cast shifting shadows across her face, alternating between light and dark.I walked over and tried to break the tension with a t

From then on, life became incredibly simple.Grace and I went to class together, ate meals together at the cafeteria, and went back to that little shop together afterward.News of our relationship spread quickly. The aerospace program was small, and the two of us were already pretty noticeable. Before long, the entire cohort knew about us.Some called us the power couple. Others said that Grace hit the jackpot landing a state top scorer as her boyfriend.Naturally, Brielle heard about it.I figured she would be upset, but I never expected her to do something out of line. That evening, I had just said goodbye to Grace at the cafeteria and was walking back to my dorm alone.I looked down at my phone and read what Grace just sent me. [What would you like for breakfast tomorrow? I’ll bring it for you.]Just as I typed a reply and looked up, I was stunned. The front of the dormitory was crowded with people. In the middle of the crowd were red, pink, and white flowers and can

I stood behind the counter with a cold gaze as my fingers gripped the edge of my apron.“Are you here to eat? If not, you’re not welcome here.”Mom started sobbing.Dad stepped forward, quickly pulled a bank card from his pocket, and handed it to me.His palm was sweaty, and his fingers trembled.“Fin, we sold the house. There’s three hundred thousand on this card for you. It’s our way of apologizing for everything we did wrong.”I looked down at the card for a moment, then scoffed.“People are truly strange creatures.”I looked up.“A month ago, you announced in front of everyone that you wouldn’t pay for my college education. Now, you’ve sold the house and say you want to make it up to me.”Mom sobbed, her voice broken and uneven.“That was just me talking nonsense. If I had known you were the state top scorer, I never would have abandoned you—”I cut her off, saying, “So, did you come here looking for your son or looking for the state top scorer?”The air turned tense.

During my free time, I still went to help out at Grace’s family restaurant. In fact, after enrollment, the school had strict rules, and students were not allowed to leave campus freely. However, Willa had somehow found a connection and secured an off-campus pass for Grace and me.At the restaurant, I tied on my apron and wiped down tables. Grace was cooking in the back kitchen. We passed bowls back and forth between us, one handing off and the other receiving. Our movements were smooth and seamless.Willa leaned against the counter, pretending to be tallying accounts, but her eyes kept drifting toward us. She could not hold back the smile at the corners of her mouth. When I walked past her carrying two plates of mango pudding, she finally could not contain herself and let out a chuckle.I set down the plates and turned back to her with curiosity. “Ms. Morris, what are you laughing at?”She winked at me and lowered her voice and replied softly, “Oh, nothing! I’m just happy

I stood there, staring at Brielle, who was standing at the end of the hallway. My mind went blank for a moment.I thought she was supposed to be at Preston Medical University with Michael. How did she end up here? She walked toward me hurriedly.“Fin, after you left, I couldn’t sleep at all. On the day we submitted our applications, I only put down National Service Academy as my only choice. I don’t want to go to Preston Medical University anymore.”I looked at her calmly, as if she were a stranger.“What does that have to do with me?”She froze for a second, then took a step forward.“Fin, we’re still together. I promised you before that I would come here with you. The fact that you’re here right now just proves you still have feelings for me, doesn’t it?”“Brielle.” My voice was steady. “We’ve already broken up. Promises from before don’t count anymore.”I felt Grace looking at me, but she did not interrupt.I paused, looked Brielle in the eyes, and said, “I’m here not bec

After work, I would take a stroll down the street lined with coconut trees. The red-brick pavement was still warm from the sun, and the palm fronds rustled in the evening breeze on both sides. At the end of the road was the sea.I took off my shoes and stepped barefoot into the water.I kicked off my shoes and stepped into the shallows. Cool water curled around my ankles as seagulls traced lazy circles in the sky, their calls drifting out on the wind.I stood there watching the sunset turn the water into a sheet of scattered gold, and it struck me. Chasing a dream alone did not feel lonely at all.Days passed quickly, and it was soon time for orientation.I dragged an old suitcase and stood before the grand entrance of National Service Academy. The unmistakable emblem atop the gate gleamed brilliantly under the sunlight, and the uniformed guards stood ramrod straight.I took a deep breath and was about to walk in when someone called out from behind me.“Fin?”I turned and sa
