Chapter 3

Autor: Tower Pusher
That night, I walked for a long time before finally heading home.

When I pushed open the door, the living room was completely dark. Not even the hallway night light had been left on.

That night, I did not sleep a wink.

Early the next morning, Noah announced in the group chat that everyone should come to school to pick up their folders. Those folders contained their application materials.

By the time I arrived at school, she was already tidying up his desk.

She looked up at me with a smile.

“Fin, you’re here. Mic and Brielle just left. They took your folder back with theirs.”

I nodded and turned around to walk back home.

When I pushed open the front door, Brielle and Michael were sitting side by side on the couch.

Brielle held a brown paper envelope in her hand and was instructing Michael, “You absolutely cannot lose this folder. You’ll need it for enrollment.

“When the time comes, keep it with your acceptance letter. Better yet, lock it in a drawer.”

Michael listened attentively and nodded earnestly.

My eyes swept past the backpacks in front of them. I walked over, opened one, and rummaged through it.

I searched for a long while but could not find my folder anywhere.

Michael turned to me and asked, “Fin, what are you looking for?”

I asked anxiously, “Where’s my folder?”

Brielle looked up, visibly uncomfortable. “Mic and I grabbed ours and left. We... aren’t sure where yours are.”

At that moment, I snapped.

Michael stood up and tried to comfort me, “Fin, don’t panic. The folder might still be at school...”

I had tuned him out. I turned and ran frantically toward the school.

The whole way there, the wind hit my throat, dry and rough.

After Noah learned what happened, she contacted the security office to review the surveillance footage.

The screen clearly showed Michael holding two folders in his hand at the time.

He had taken both, yet he somehow lost mine.

Just then, Michael and Brielle arrived at the school.

Michael walked in and casually threw his arm around my shoulder with an easygoing look.

“Fin, it’s okay. We’ll definitely find it. Don’t worry.”

I stood there, frozen in his tight embrace.

He was telling me not to worry.

I had scored a 1580 on the SAT, and I could have gone to any top university. Those scores had gone completely missing.

Noah tried to comfort me, saying, “Fin, take a breath. Call your parents and have them come to the school.

“You need to get your application materials reissued immediately.”

Replacing lost application materials was not simple.

I would need new transcripts from the guidance office, resend my SAT scores through the College Board, and get fresh recommendation letters from my teachers.

Missing any one piece meant delays, and nothing could be done overnight.

Even if I managed to gather everything, the full process would drag on for weeks.

It was all Michael’s fault.

He finally started to panic, and his eyes were getting teary. He pulled out his phone and called our parents.

“Mom, Fin lost his folder. You and Dad need to come to the school now!”

Nearly an hour later, our parents finally showed up at the school, looking reluctant.

Mom stormed in and yelled at me, “Why couldn’t you keep your materials properly? What a waste of all those years in school!”

Dad frowned as he looked at me, “So what if they’re lost? You failed the exam anyway.

“It doesn’t matter if you have them or not. Worst case, you just don’t go to college.”

I snapped my head and turned to Michael as I said through gritted teeth, “Michael, did you do that on purpose?”

Before he could say a word, Brielle stepped in front of him to shield him.

“Fin, you’re being unreasonable! Mic went out of his way to get your materials for you. Is this how you would thank him?”

Mom slapped me and scolded me in a shrill voice, “You couldn’t be bothered to handle your own errands, and then you have the nerve to blame other people?

“What, does Mic work for you now? Is he your personal errand boy or something?”

Everyone at the scene fell silent for a moment. No one had expected things to unfold like that.I took a step back and put some distance between us.“Brielle, if you keep this up, I’ll report you to the school and make sure you can’t even finish your studies here.”Just as she was about to say something, two uniformed security guards emerged from the crowd.“Miss, gatherings and disturbances are not allowed here. Please leave immediately.”Brielle was grabbed by the arms and dragged out.She struggled and turned back to call my name, but her voice was drowned out by the murmurs of the crowd.I stood there as the crowd slowly dispersed, leaving the space in a mess. Not far away, only one person remained. It was Grace. She stood with her arms crossed. I had no idea how long she had been there or how much she had overheard. The streetlamp above her cast shifting shadows across her face, alternating between light and dark.I walked over and tried to break the tension with a t

From then on, life became incredibly simple.Grace and I went to class together, ate meals together at the cafeteria, and went back to that little shop together afterward.News of our relationship spread quickly. The aerospace program was small, and the two of us were already pretty noticeable. Before long, the entire cohort knew about us.Some called us the power couple. Others said that Grace hit the jackpot landing a state top scorer as her boyfriend.Naturally, Brielle heard about it.I figured she would be upset, but I never expected her to do something out of line. That evening, I had just said goodbye to Grace at the cafeteria and was walking back to my dorm alone.I looked down at my phone and read what Grace just sent me. [What would you like for breakfast tomorrow? I’ll bring it for you.]Just as I typed a reply and looked up, I was stunned. The front of the dormitory was crowded with people. In the middle of the crowd were red, pink, and white flowers and can

I stood behind the counter with a cold gaze as my fingers gripped the edge of my apron.“Are you here to eat? If not, you’re not welcome here.”Mom started sobbing.Dad stepped forward, quickly pulled a bank card from his pocket, and handed it to me.His palm was sweaty, and his fingers trembled.“Fin, we sold the house. There’s three hundred thousand on this card for you. It’s our way of apologizing for everything we did wrong.”I looked down at the card for a moment, then scoffed.“People are truly strange creatures.”I looked up.“A month ago, you announced in front of everyone that you wouldn’t pay for my college education. Now, you’ve sold the house and say you want to make it up to me.”Mom sobbed, her voice broken and uneven.“That was just me talking nonsense. If I had known you were the state top scorer, I never would have abandoned you—”I cut her off, saying, “So, did you come here looking for your son or looking for the state top scorer?”The air turned tense.

During my free time, I still went to help out at Grace’s family restaurant. In fact, after enrollment, the school had strict rules, and students were not allowed to leave campus freely. However, Willa had somehow found a connection and secured an off-campus pass for Grace and me.At the restaurant, I tied on my apron and wiped down tables. Grace was cooking in the back kitchen. We passed bowls back and forth between us, one handing off and the other receiving. Our movements were smooth and seamless.Willa leaned against the counter, pretending to be tallying accounts, but her eyes kept drifting toward us. She could not hold back the smile at the corners of her mouth. When I walked past her carrying two plates of mango pudding, she finally could not contain herself and let out a chuckle.I set down the plates and turned back to her with curiosity. “Ms. Morris, what are you laughing at?”She winked at me and lowered her voice and replied softly, “Oh, nothing! I’m just happy

I stood there, staring at Brielle, who was standing at the end of the hallway. My mind went blank for a moment.I thought she was supposed to be at Preston Medical University with Michael. How did she end up here? She walked toward me hurriedly.“Fin, after you left, I couldn’t sleep at all. On the day we submitted our applications, I only put down National Service Academy as my only choice. I don’t want to go to Preston Medical University anymore.”I looked at her calmly, as if she were a stranger.“What does that have to do with me?”She froze for a second, then took a step forward.“Fin, we’re still together. I promised you before that I would come here with you. The fact that you’re here right now just proves you still have feelings for me, doesn’t it?”“Brielle.” My voice was steady. “We’ve already broken up. Promises from before don’t count anymore.”I felt Grace looking at me, but she did not interrupt.I paused, looked Brielle in the eyes, and said, “I’m here not bec

After work, I would take a stroll down the street lined with coconut trees. The red-brick pavement was still warm from the sun, and the palm fronds rustled in the evening breeze on both sides. At the end of the road was the sea.I took off my shoes and stepped barefoot into the water.I kicked off my shoes and stepped into the shallows. Cool water curled around my ankles as seagulls traced lazy circles in the sky, their calls drifting out on the wind.I stood there watching the sunset turn the water into a sheet of scattered gold, and it struck me. Chasing a dream alone did not feel lonely at all.Days passed quickly, and it was soon time for orientation.I dragged an old suitcase and stood before the grand entrance of National Service Academy. The unmistakable emblem atop the gate gleamed brilliantly under the sunlight, and the uniformed guards stood ramrod straight.I took a deep breath and was about to walk in when someone called out from behind me.“Fin?”I turned and sa
