Chapter 7

Autor: Tower Pusher
In the days that followed, Michael kept sending me messages.

[The food down in Southwick is so sweet. I just can’t get used to it.]

Attached was a photo of an elaborate local meal, including sweet-glazed shrimp, honeyed ribs, and syrupy desserts arranged on delicate white plates.

Two days after, he sent me a video.

The footage was shaky.

Brielle crouched on the beach, her back to the camera, her white dress fluttering in the wind.

She was holding small white shells in her hand and placing them one by one onto the sand.

The camera zoomed in, and the shells spelled out Michael’s name.

Waves crashed in, one after another. Off-screen, Michael laughed and said, “Look how bored your girlfriend is.”

In the video, Brielle looked genuinely happy.

She had once smiled and promised to do so many things with me, and she had given every single one of those promises to someone else.

I kept looking at my phone over and over, watching the screen turn on and off, unable to decide what to do.

Finally, I opened Brielle’s chat box and sent her a text.

[Let’s break up.]

Then, I blocked Michael on WhatsApp.

My decisiveness surprised even me.

The next evening, they came home.

The moment Brielle stepped through the door, she shouted at the top of her lungs.

“Finley, why did you block Mic? He couldn’t even enjoy the second half of the trip because of you!

“Also, what’s this about breaking up?”

After she spoke, she finally realized that the house was empty.

In an instant, she felt a sense of unease wash over her.

Michael called out to her from the doorway.

“Bree, hurry up! Mom and Dad are heading to the courthouse.”

“Fin isn’t home,” she replied hesitantly.

Mom stood outside the door as she said indifferently, “Forget about him.

“Today is the day the divorce is finalized. Let’s take care of our own business first.”

Inside the courthouse lobby, my parents sat side by side on a bench.

They argued fiercely over who would get custody of Michael.

In the end, both sides compromised and worked out a complicated rotating schedule.

Michael would stay at Dad’s place on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.

He would live with Mom on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

On Sundays, both parents would spend the day with him together.

The clerk looked exasperated. “You have another son, don’t you? How are you handling custody for him?”

Mom did not even lift her head as she said, “He’s already eighteen anyway. Legally, I’ve fulfilled my obligation to support him.”

Dad chimed in.

“With his grades, he’ll have to fend for himself from now on. The best we can do is put Mic through school. Mic is the hope of this family.”

Brielle gripped Michael’s hand tightly.

“Don’t worry, Mic. I’ll take care of you through all four years of college. Later on, I’ll—”

Just then, the courthouse lobby’s glass door swung open.

A crowd of people surged in, carrying cameras and holding out microphones.

The lead reporter swept his gaze across the hall and finally locked onto Mom and Dad.

He strode over, barely containing his excitement as he said, “Excuse me, are you two the parents of this year’s state top scorer?!”

Everyone at the scene fell silent for a moment. No one had expected things to unfold like that.I took a step back and put some distance between us.“Brielle, if you keep this up, I’ll report you to the school and make sure you can’t even finish your studies here.”Just as she was about to say something, two uniformed security guards emerged from the crowd.“Miss, gatherings and disturbances are not allowed here. Please leave immediately.”Brielle was grabbed by the arms and dragged out.She struggled and turned back to call my name, but her voice was drowned out by the murmurs of the crowd.I stood there as the crowd slowly dispersed, leaving the space in a mess. Not far away, only one person remained. It was Grace. She stood with her arms crossed. I had no idea how long she had been there or how much she had overheard. The streetlamp above her cast shifting shadows across her face, alternating between light and dark.I walked over and tried to break the tension with a t

From then on, life became incredibly simple.Grace and I went to class together, ate meals together at the cafeteria, and went back to that little shop together afterward.News of our relationship spread quickly. The aerospace program was small, and the two of us were already pretty noticeable. Before long, the entire cohort knew about us.Some called us the power couple. Others said that Grace hit the jackpot landing a state top scorer as her boyfriend.Naturally, Brielle heard about it.I figured she would be upset, but I never expected her to do something out of line. That evening, I had just said goodbye to Grace at the cafeteria and was walking back to my dorm alone.I looked down at my phone and read what Grace just sent me. [What would you like for breakfast tomorrow? I’ll bring it for you.]Just as I typed a reply and looked up, I was stunned. The front of the dormitory was crowded with people. In the middle of the crowd were red, pink, and white flowers and can

I stood behind the counter with a cold gaze as my fingers gripped the edge of my apron.“Are you here to eat? If not, you’re not welcome here.”Mom started sobbing.Dad stepped forward, quickly pulled a bank card from his pocket, and handed it to me.His palm was sweaty, and his fingers trembled.“Fin, we sold the house. There’s three hundred thousand on this card for you. It’s our way of apologizing for everything we did wrong.”I looked down at the card for a moment, then scoffed.“People are truly strange creatures.”I looked up.“A month ago, you announced in front of everyone that you wouldn’t pay for my college education. Now, you’ve sold the house and say you want to make it up to me.”Mom sobbed, her voice broken and uneven.“That was just me talking nonsense. If I had known you were the state top scorer, I never would have abandoned you—”I cut her off, saying, “So, did you come here looking for your son or looking for the state top scorer?”The air turned tense.

During my free time, I still went to help out at Grace’s family restaurant. In fact, after enrollment, the school had strict rules, and students were not allowed to leave campus freely. However, Willa had somehow found a connection and secured an off-campus pass for Grace and me.At the restaurant, I tied on my apron and wiped down tables. Grace was cooking in the back kitchen. We passed bowls back and forth between us, one handing off and the other receiving. Our movements were smooth and seamless.Willa leaned against the counter, pretending to be tallying accounts, but her eyes kept drifting toward us. She could not hold back the smile at the corners of her mouth. When I walked past her carrying two plates of mango pudding, she finally could not contain herself and let out a chuckle.I set down the plates and turned back to her with curiosity. “Ms. Morris, what are you laughing at?”She winked at me and lowered her voice and replied softly, “Oh, nothing! I’m just happy

I stood there, staring at Brielle, who was standing at the end of the hallway. My mind went blank for a moment.I thought she was supposed to be at Preston Medical University with Michael. How did she end up here? She walked toward me hurriedly.“Fin, after you left, I couldn’t sleep at all. On the day we submitted our applications, I only put down National Service Academy as my only choice. I don’t want to go to Preston Medical University anymore.”I looked at her calmly, as if she were a stranger.“What does that have to do with me?”She froze for a second, then took a step forward.“Fin, we’re still together. I promised you before that I would come here with you. The fact that you’re here right now just proves you still have feelings for me, doesn’t it?”“Brielle.” My voice was steady. “We’ve already broken up. Promises from before don’t count anymore.”I felt Grace looking at me, but she did not interrupt.I paused, looked Brielle in the eyes, and said, “I’m here not bec

After work, I would take a stroll down the street lined with coconut trees. The red-brick pavement was still warm from the sun, and the palm fronds rustled in the evening breeze on both sides. At the end of the road was the sea.I took off my shoes and stepped barefoot into the water.I kicked off my shoes and stepped into the shallows. Cool water curled around my ankles as seagulls traced lazy circles in the sky, their calls drifting out on the wind.I stood there watching the sunset turn the water into a sheet of scattered gold, and it struck me. Chasing a dream alone did not feel lonely at all.Days passed quickly, and it was soon time for orientation.I dragged an old suitcase and stood before the grand entrance of National Service Academy. The unmistakable emblem atop the gate gleamed brilliantly under the sunlight, and the uniformed guards stood ramrod straight.I took a deep breath and was about to walk in when someone called out from behind me.“Fin?”I turned and sa
