Chapter 6

Autor: Tower Pusher
I clutched my soaked suitcase to my chest and crouched under the eaves while calling a locksmith on my phone.

I must have looked just like a stray cat that had been abandoned as I huddled in the corner.

The locksmith rode over on his scooter through the pouring rain. He was drenched as well.

He took one look at the door lock and snapped at me impatiently, “Two hundred dollars.”

I rummaged through all my pockets and pulled out a few crumpled fives and tens.

I counted them twice, then a third time. It was still nowhere near enough.

“Sir, could you... cut me a break?”

The locksmith pulled out his tools and replied in an irritated tone, “This is exactly what ticks me off about people like you.

“You live in this fancy place, and you can’t even scrape together two hundred dollars?”

I stopped talking and lowered my head even more.

I really could not come up with the money.

Michael would never find himself in such a pathetic situation.

His monthly allowance was two thousand dollars, while I had to save up every single penny I had.

The lock mechanism turned a few times, and with a click, the door swung open.

The locksmith straightened up and packed away his tools, then casually asked, “Why are you here all by yourself? Where’s your family?”

My voice dropped to barely a whisper as I replied, “They all went on vacation. They forgot I was still outside.”

The locksmith was stunned for a moment.

He closed his toolbox, brushed his hands off, and said, “Alright, forget it. On the house.”

I was taken aback.

“No, I can’t do that! I should still pay you what I owe.”

“For guys like us who work with our hands, popping a lock is nothing. Consider it a small favor.”

When I looked embarrassed, he locked the door again and quickly pried it open again with his tool.

“See? Locked tight, and now it’s open again. Easy.

“Locked, open. It’s nothing, really.”

The door swung back and forth as he laughed cheerfully.

At that moment, I broke down.

It was as though every tear I’d held back for eighteen years was pouring out all at once.

He scrambled, clearly flustered.

“Hey, come on now... no crying, alright? Get inside and take a hot shower. You’ll catch a cold!”

He gently nudged me through the doorway.

Before he left, he turned back and said, “Next time you need a lock popped, call me. It’ll be on the house.”

I watched him walk away. Then, I sank to the floor, pulled my knees to my chest, and sobbed uncontrollably.

Even a complete stranger had offered me a hand when I was at rock bottom.

Yet my own family, the people who were supposed to have my back, had pushed me out into the rain.

I cried for what felt like hours, until my voice went raw and the sky finally cleared.

When it was over, my heart calmed down.

I went upstairs and began packing my things.

There was not much for me to pack. I only took a few changes of clothes and some essential documents.

When I opened the drawer in the corner, I found the diary I had kept all those years.

Page after page, it was filled with the private thoughts of a younger me.

I had written down every little detail, like the day Brielle handed me a bottle of water in the hallway.

Or the time she called my name during a sports meet.

Or that evening when she had said, “It’s getting dark. Let’s walk home together.”

Those fleeting moments had been recorded with painstaking care, as if I were collecting promises that would never be kept.

When I flipped to the last page, my fingers paused.

There was a drawing of three figures. Me, Michael, and Brielle.

The figures stood in a row, hand-in-hand. A crooked tree sat in the middle, and above their heads hung a round, smiling sun.

I stared at that drawing for a long time.

I felt my breath catch when I noticed a detail.

Even in my own drawing, Michael stood dead center.

I could not take it anymore. I tore the page out of the book.

I ripped it into four pieces, then eight, and then a shower of fragments that scattered across the floor.

Then, I tossed the entire diary into a metal trash bin and lit it with a lighter.

The flames devoured everything. All those painstakingly hoarded moments turned to ash and drifted upward, light and weightless.

I watched them burn to the end.

Then, I turned, grabbed my suitcase, and walked downstairs.

I would never again be the nobody standing on the sidelines of someone else’s life.

Everyone at the scene fell silent for a moment. No one had expected things to unfold like that.I took a step back and put some distance between us.“Brielle, if you keep this up, I’ll report you to the school and make sure you can’t even finish your studies here.”Just as she was about to say something, two uniformed security guards emerged from the crowd.“Miss, gatherings and disturbances are not allowed here. Please leave immediately.”Brielle was grabbed by the arms and dragged out.She struggled and turned back to call my name, but her voice was drowned out by the murmurs of the crowd.I stood there as the crowd slowly dispersed, leaving the space in a mess. Not far away, only one person remained. It was Grace. She stood with her arms crossed. I had no idea how long she had been there or how much she had overheard. The streetlamp above her cast shifting shadows across her face, alternating between light and dark.I walked over and tried to break the tension with a t

From then on, life became incredibly simple.Grace and I went to class together, ate meals together at the cafeteria, and went back to that little shop together afterward.News of our relationship spread quickly. The aerospace program was small, and the two of us were already pretty noticeable. Before long, the entire cohort knew about us.Some called us the power couple. Others said that Grace hit the jackpot landing a state top scorer as her boyfriend.Naturally, Brielle heard about it.I figured she would be upset, but I never expected her to do something out of line. That evening, I had just said goodbye to Grace at the cafeteria and was walking back to my dorm alone.I looked down at my phone and read what Grace just sent me. [What would you like for breakfast tomorrow? I’ll bring it for you.]Just as I typed a reply and looked up, I was stunned. The front of the dormitory was crowded with people. In the middle of the crowd were red, pink, and white flowers and can

I stood behind the counter with a cold gaze as my fingers gripped the edge of my apron.“Are you here to eat? If not, you’re not welcome here.”Mom started sobbing.Dad stepped forward, quickly pulled a bank card from his pocket, and handed it to me.His palm was sweaty, and his fingers trembled.“Fin, we sold the house. There’s three hundred thousand on this card for you. It’s our way of apologizing for everything we did wrong.”I looked down at the card for a moment, then scoffed.“People are truly strange creatures.”I looked up.“A month ago, you announced in front of everyone that you wouldn’t pay for my college education. Now, you’ve sold the house and say you want to make it up to me.”Mom sobbed, her voice broken and uneven.“That was just me talking nonsense. If I had known you were the state top scorer, I never would have abandoned you—”I cut her off, saying, “So, did you come here looking for your son or looking for the state top scorer?”The air turned tense.

During my free time, I still went to help out at Grace’s family restaurant. In fact, after enrollment, the school had strict rules, and students were not allowed to leave campus freely. However, Willa had somehow found a connection and secured an off-campus pass for Grace and me.At the restaurant, I tied on my apron and wiped down tables. Grace was cooking in the back kitchen. We passed bowls back and forth between us, one handing off and the other receiving. Our movements were smooth and seamless.Willa leaned against the counter, pretending to be tallying accounts, but her eyes kept drifting toward us. She could not hold back the smile at the corners of her mouth. When I walked past her carrying two plates of mango pudding, she finally could not contain herself and let out a chuckle.I set down the plates and turned back to her with curiosity. “Ms. Morris, what are you laughing at?”She winked at me and lowered her voice and replied softly, “Oh, nothing! I’m just happy

I stood there, staring at Brielle, who was standing at the end of the hallway. My mind went blank for a moment.I thought she was supposed to be at Preston Medical University with Michael. How did she end up here? She walked toward me hurriedly.“Fin, after you left, I couldn’t sleep at all. On the day we submitted our applications, I only put down National Service Academy as my only choice. I don’t want to go to Preston Medical University anymore.”I looked at her calmly, as if she were a stranger.“What does that have to do with me?”She froze for a second, then took a step forward.“Fin, we’re still together. I promised you before that I would come here with you. The fact that you’re here right now just proves you still have feelings for me, doesn’t it?”“Brielle.” My voice was steady. “We’ve already broken up. Promises from before don’t count anymore.”I felt Grace looking at me, but she did not interrupt.I paused, looked Brielle in the eyes, and said, “I’m here not bec

After work, I would take a stroll down the street lined with coconut trees. The red-brick pavement was still warm from the sun, and the palm fronds rustled in the evening breeze on both sides. At the end of the road was the sea.I took off my shoes and stepped barefoot into the water.I kicked off my shoes and stepped into the shallows. Cool water curled around my ankles as seagulls traced lazy circles in the sky, their calls drifting out on the wind.I stood there watching the sunset turn the water into a sheet of scattered gold, and it struck me. Chasing a dream alone did not feel lonely at all.Days passed quickly, and it was soon time for orientation.I dragged an old suitcase and stood before the grand entrance of National Service Academy. The unmistakable emblem atop the gate gleamed brilliantly under the sunlight, and the uniformed guards stood ramrod straight.I took a deep breath and was about to walk in when someone called out from behind me.“Fin?”I turned and sa
