Chapter 1

It was the last weekend before the wedding.

I drove to the fanciest bridal boutique downtown.

The sales associate greeted me with a bright smile, then brought out a bulky gown covered in rhinestones.

Cheap stones glittered across layers of scratchy tulle.

"Ms. Lambert, Mr. Crowley asked that you try this one on today."

Damian's gentle voice drifted over from the lounge.

He walked over and tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear.

"The one you picked was too plain. This one really sparkles. Go on, try it on."

The staff helped me into the 22-pound gown.

The tulle scratched my skin, and the zipper dug into my waist so tightly I could barely breathe.

But when I stepped out of the fitting room, holding up the heavy skirt, Damian was gone.

The sales associate avoided my eyes and pointed toward the VIP suite at the end of the hall.

I struggled toward it and found the door half open.

A woman stood before the full-length mirror, admiring herself in the hand-embroidered wedding dress I'd had custom-made.

It was my twin sister, Chloe.

The waist, tailored for me, had been taken in almost three inches to fit her slender frame.

Chloe covered her mouth and gave a couple of soft coughs, then leaned against Damian's shoulder, her eyes welling up.

"Damian, you gave me the dress. Do you think Zoe will be mad when she finds out?"

Damian, who couldn't be bothered to pick up a pen off the floor, was crouching at Chloe's feet, smoothing her skirt. He didn't hesitate. "Zoe's always been understanding. She'll get it. Besides, it's just a dress."

My heart ached at how casually he said it. I'd waited three months for that dress and gone back and forth with the designer until it was perfect. Damian had handed it to Chloe as if it meant nothing...

I pushed the door open and fixed them both with a cold stare.

Damian froze when he saw me. Then he came over, took my hand, and said, "Zoe, the doctor says Chloe's condition is serious. She doesn't have much time left.

"She's never even been in a relationship, let alone worn a wedding dress or been a bride.

"I just feel bad for her. I wanted her to get to wear a wedding dress at least once.

"Just let her borrow it this once, okay?"

I listened to his excuses in disbelief. "So you went behind my back and gave her my dress?"

"Zoe, it's just a dress. You've always been the kind one. Don't hold it against your sister.

"You can wear another one. Why fight Chloe over this?"

I almost laughed. It was my dress, yet somehow he made it sound as if I were the one taking it from her.

Chloe stood off to the side. Right on cue, tears filled her eyes. "Zoe, please don't be mad. I'll take the dress off right now and give it back. Please don't fight because of me."

She made a show of trying to take off the dress, but after barely two steps, her eyes rolled back and she collapsed. Damian caught her and held her tight.

Holding Chloe, he frowned at me. "Enough. Look what you've done to your sister. I'm taking her to the hospital. Think about what you've done!"

Damian carried Chloe out without looking back at me.

I stood frozen and looked down at the heavy, gaudy gown I still had on.

The pain in my chest was so sharp I could barely breathe.

Damian and I had met at a freshman welcome party in college.

Back then, he was a proud, arrogant rich kid everyone wanted to be around. But he fell for me at first sight.

He spent most of that semester pursuing me, swallowing his pride at every turn.

He'd cross half the city before dawn just to buy me my favorite coffee.

When I got sick, he'd wait all night outside my dorm.

On every anniversary, he gave me my favorite pink roses and made sure everyone knew how he felt.

"Zoe, I'm never marrying anyone but you. You're the only woman I'll ever call my wife."

I used to think his love would never change.

Then, three years ago, I had an accident and nearly drowned. When I woke up in the hospital, Chloe was the only one at my bedside.

Everyone said she'd saved me and ruined her health in the process.

From that day on, Damian used the debt I supposedly owed Chloe to make me give in to her again and again.

After six years together, our relationship had become a joke.

The staff gave me looks that mixed sympathy with mockery. Tears stung my eyes.

I held them back, took off the dress, and walked out of the boutique in a daze.

Our new home was silent when I got back. Damian still wasn't there.

The suit he'd taken off the night before lay on the couch. As I picked it up to hang it, two plane tickets slipped out of a pocket onto the rug.

Both were first class to Paris, one for Damian and the other for Chloe.

The travel dates matched our honeymoon exactly.

A few months later, as Lucas and I were leaving a gala, I ran into someone I'd never expected to see.It was Damian. He'd lost a lot of weight since I'd last seen him. His eyes were sunken, and he looked haggard. The confident, carefree man I'd known was gone. The moment he saw me, his face lit up with wild joy, and he stumbled toward me."Zoe, it really is you! Thank God I found you!"He reached for me, but I pulled away.Damian's hand froze in midair. "Zoe, it's me. I've come to take you home."He seemed to remember something and pulled a ring from his coat. "Look, it's the one you loved. I bought it. If you want, we can have our wedding after all."I took a few steps back and said coldly, "Don't bother. It's over between us. Put the ring away!"Damian stared at me, his eyes pleading. "Zoe, I know I was wrong. I shouldn't have believed Chloe or pushed you to give her our wedding. And I should have helped you when your father forced your thumbprint onto that agreement."Zoe, give me o

For my birthday, Lucas planned an unforgettable surprise at Paris's highest rooftop restaurant.Roses flown in for the occasion filled the room. Lucas had won a pink diamond necklace at auction, and he fastened it around my neck himself. In that moment, I felt my heart skip a beat.Late one night, a storm broke just as I was leaving work. Lucas showed up just in time and drove me back to my apartment. After my shower, I stepped out of the bathroom, drying my hair, and smelled something delicious.I followed the smell to the kitchen. Lucas, so ruthless in business, stood at the stove in an apron with his sleeves rolled up, focused on cooking. He heard me and turned with a smile. "Almost ready. You got caught in the rain. Have something hot to warm up, or you'll have a headache tomorrow."The warm kitchen light softened his sharp features. My heart raced when I met his eyes.I couldn't remember the last time anyone had looked after me like this. Back in New York, my parents and Damian ha

Damian returned to the house and froze when he opened my bedroom door.My room was empty. Everything that belonged to me was gone. It looked as if no one had ever lived there.Panicking, Damian searched every other room. There was no trace of me anywhere. He called my name again and again. No one answered. His hands shook as he called my phone, but every call went straight to voicemail. I'd blocked him. Then something glinted on the desk. It was my wedding ring.He stared at it and texted me with trembling hands. "Zoe, I was wrong. I blamed you for things that weren't your fault. This is on me. I promise I'll make it up to you.""Today was supposed to be our wedding. You said we'd be together forever. Please come back.""Come back, Zoe. I love you!"He kept sending messages, but no reply ever came. Damian beat his fists against his head, overcome with regret and despair...His legs gave way, and he sank to the floor.Only then did he understand: my calm the night before hadn't meant I'

Her falsified medical charts and diagnoses filled the screen.Photos of her bribing the doctor and records of the bank transfers followed. The guests began to whisper."What? Her illness was fake?""I always heard the Lambert family's older daughter was sickly. Turns out she was faking it. And wasn't her sister supposed to be the bride today?"Hearing the whispers, Chloe snapped. She dropped her bouquet and ran toward the control booth, screaming, "That's a lie. Turn it off right now. None of this is real!"My mother stared at the screen, her face ashen. She shook her head, grabbed Chloe's hand, and shielded her."That can't be true. Chloe goes to the hospital every month. She comes home vomiting. How could she have lied to us?"Chloe's eyes filled with tears. "That's right, Mom! Zoe faked all of this. She's angry about the wedding, so she chose today to get back at me!"She grew more worked up as she spoke, then covered her mouth and cried. My mother pulled her into a protective hug.

I shook off his hand. "I told you, this house belongs to me and Grandpa. I'm never giving it up!"Damian looked taken aback by my refusal. His frown deepened."Zoe, stop throwing a tantrum. Look at Chloe. Don't you have any compassion or gratitude?"Chloe slumped against the couch, sobbing weakly."Damian, don't. Please, all of you, stop pressuring Zoe. It's just my rotten luck! I don't want the house anymore..."Don't fight with Zoe because of me."Her face was deathly pale. Her chest heaved, and she coughed so violently it looked like she might breathe her last at any moment.Everyone rushed to comfort her.My father yanked a property transfer agreement from a drawer and slammed it down. "Zoe, you'll sign this house over today, whether you like it or not!"He grabbed my wrist and forced my thumb onto an ink pad."Let go of me!"He twisted my wrist until pain shot up my arm. I fought with all my strength and looked to Damian, still hoping he'd help me.But he only stood beside Chloe a

People nearby turned to stare. The coffee stung my eyes, and my head spun. I could barely make out my mother's words as she jabbed a finger at me.All I could see was her grabbing her purse and storming off without a backward glance.I stood there trembling, covered in coffee. Then someone held out a dark silk handkerchief, and I caught the crisp, woody scent of oud.I looked up, startled, and found a man standing beside me.He wore a sharply tailored charcoal suit, his expression cool and aloof. It was Lucas Harmon, the head of the Harmon Group. No one in New York dared cross him. He'd taken charge of a business empire at a young age and ruled it with an iron fist.Just last week, I'd represented my company at a strategy meeting with his firm. He'd sat at the head of the table, untouchable."Ms. Lambert, here. Wipe your face."Lucas's voice was reassuring, without a trace of mockery. At a small gesture from him, his assistant went to a nearby mall to buy me clean clothes. He was still
