Chapter 1

The passenger-side door was wide open.

Chloe had her legs shamelessly propped up on the center console, her combat boots resting against the dashboard. She was chewing gum and holding my favorite travel mug, looking completely unapologetic.

“Oh, Sienna, you’re here? Sorry! I get really carsick, so I have to sit in the front. Logan and I are practically brothers. You don’t mind, do you?”

Logan was sitting in the driver’s seat, peeling an orange for her. At her words, he looked up at me with a slight frown.

“What took you so long? Chloe’s been waiting forever. There’s plenty of room in the back. Just sit there. Don’t be so petty.”

I stood outside the car, the cold wind stinging my cheeks.

This wasn’t the first time.

Ever since Chloe had returned from overseas, I’d become the third wheel in what was supposed to be the three of us.

She needed Logan to take care of her drinks whenever we went out to eat, carry her shopping bags whenever we went shopping, and even call Logan in the middle of the night just because she couldn’t sleep and wanted someone to talk to.

She always had the same excuse:

“It’s guy friendship. Women just don’t get it.”

I was about to speak when Mochi suddenly squirmed in my arms.

A young but deeply mocking voice exploded inside my head.

“Ugh! What a load of crap! She isn’t carsick at all! She’s thinking, ‘That idiot Sienna will probably swallow her anger again. I love watching her act like such a doormat. Once we get there, I’m going to pretend I’m drunk and fall into Logan’s arms just to piss her off!’”

My entire body went rigid.

I looked down at Mochi.

The black cat was staring daggers at Chloe with its golden, slit-pupil eyes, its tail flicking irritably.

The voice continued:

“Human, are you stupid? You’re still not going to slap her? She’s got a lace sleep mask she just bought hidden in her bag. She’s planning to use it when we go camping tonight! Oh, and throw away that stupid travel mug. She spit in it!”

My mind went completely blank.

Mind reading? My cat can actually talk to me?

Chloe grew impatient when I didn’t move.

“Sienna, hurry up. Everyone’s waiting. It’s just a seat. Do you really have to make such a big deal out of it?”

Logan’s expression hardened too.

“Sienna, can you be reasonable for once? Chloe’s just straightforward. She’s not like other women who are always playing mind games. Stop reading so much into everything she does.”

Straightforward?

Spitting in someone’s cup was straightforward? Hiding a lace sleep mask was straightforward?

The anger I’d been suppressing for so long finally erupted after hearing Mochi’s words.

I took a deep breath and stepped forward.

I snatched the travel mug from Chloe’s hand.

Then I tipped my wrist and splashed the remaining half cup of lukewarm water straight into her face.

“Ah!”

Chloe screamed and nearly jumped out of her seat.

Logan’s face went pale as he hurriedly grabbed some tissues to wipe her face.

“Sienna, are you crazy?!”

I stared at them coldly and dropped the empty mug onto the ground.

“My hand slipped. Since you’re so carsick, you might as well stay home. Wouldn’t want you throwing up all over the car and making everyone sick.”

With that, I turned around, Mochi still in my arms.

“I’m not riding in this car. You two best friends can catch up without me.”

Behind me came Logan’s furious roar.

“Sienna, stop! If you walk away today, don’t bother coming back!”

I didn’t stop.

Mochi purred happily in my arms.

“That’s more like it, Human! See that convenience store up ahead? Turn left and go inside. Buy a scratch-off ticket. Get the ten-dollar ones, and take the third ticket from the top of the first book.”

I walked into the convenience store, half believing my cat and half convinced I’d lost my mind.

Following Mochi’s instructions, I bought the scratch-off ticket.

The moment I scratched away the silver coating with a coin, I saw the number underneath.

My hand trembled.

$2,000.

“Holy crap…”

I couldn’t help swearing under my breath.

This wasn’t a stray cat.

This was my personal lucky charm!

Desperate, she had tried to transfer the remaining money into her personal account and flee with it.Logan had been completely terrified. The “best friend” he’d been so obsessed with had been talking about their future with him one second, then holding a kitchen knife to his throat and calling him a “stupid pig” the next.Just thinking about it was almost entertaining. As the person who reported the crime, I went to the police station to give my statement. When I walked out, I ran into Logan. In just one

The paper fluttered onto the bed.Chloe looked down at it, and her pupils contracted violently. She froze as if she’d just seen a ghost. She lunged for the paper, trying to snatch it back, but I was ready. I grabbed her wrist and stopped her.Logan looked confused as he picked up the paper.“What is this? Online gambling? Romance scams?”He looked at Chloe, confusion filling his eyes.“Chloe, why does the name on this look so similar to the account holder on my investment app?”Chloe completely panicked. She grabbed Logan’s arm, her voice turning shrill.“Logan! Don’t listen to her! She forged this! She’d do anything to tear us apart! I’m your best friend! We’ve known each other for over a decade. Would I ever hurt you?”She kept talking, desperately trying to get inside Logan’s head.“Sienna’s just jealous! She’s jealous of how close we are! Think about it. Once we put the money in, it’ll double. Then we can start our own company and finally live life on our own terms. You

I immediately photographed the evidence and carefully put the papers away. This was bigger than I thought. If this had been nothing more than a messy relationship dispute, I could have simply walked away. But this involved an actual crime, and judging from what I’d seen, Chloe’s group was far bigger than I’d initially assumed.I took Mochi home. The entire ride, Mochi kept filling me in on Chloe’s thoughts.“That woman is drowning in loan-shark debt. She came back to find some sucker to cover her losses. You know Logan’s family recently received two houses and $300,000 in cash from a property buyout?”I froze.“Property buyout? He never told me about that.”“Hah. He’s been hiding it from you. He wants to keep the money as premarital assets or give it to his ‘bro’ to invest. Chloe came back specifically for that money.”The last bit of warmth I had felt toward Logan disappeared completely. So he wasn’t just a cheating jerk. He’d been guarding that money from me as if I were a

“You wouldn’t dare, Sienna!” Chloe lunged at me like a madwoman, reaching for my face.Logan tried to stop me, too. “Sienna, haven’t you had enough?”But I worked out regularly and was stronger than I looked. I shoved Chloe away.“Ah!” Chloe screamed as she fell to the ground.I took the opportunity to unzip the backpack and dump everything inside onto the ground.Cosmetics, a change of clothes, cigarettes... and one very conspicuous pink box. There were also several folded sheets of paper. The air instantly went still. The pink box was unmistakably a box of condoms from a well-known brand. It had already been opened, and one was missing.“So this is the gift you brought for your ‘bro’?” I kicked the box, my eyes filled with mockery.Logan’s face turned bright red.The guys who had been defending Chloe moments ago fell completely silent, their expressions suddenly turning awkward and suggestive.Chloe sat sprawled on the ground, her face deathly pale. But a moment later, a

“Is this the ‘brotherhood’ you two were talking about?”Inside the tent, Logan was on top of Chloe, his hands still fumbling with the buttons of her shirt. Her shirt was already half-open, revealing the black lace underneath. The moment they heard my voice, they sprang apart as if they had been struck by lightning.Logan hurriedly pulled up his pants, his face turning deathly pale.“S-Sienna? What are you doing here?”Chloe reacted much faster. She quickly pulled her shirt closed, and tears immediately welled up in her eyes.“Sienna, you’ve got it all wrong! I got dizzy and fell just now. Logan was only helping me up!”I held up my phone and sneered.“Helping you up requires undoing your buttons? And lying on top of you? Chloe, is this what you call being straightforward?”The men outside heard the commotion and rushed over. The moment they saw what was happening, an awkward silence fell over the campsite.Embarrassed and furious, Logan charged at me and reached for my phon
