Chapter 13

Author: Year on Year
Sophie stared at the screen for a long time.

In August, someone told me that Sophie had found a job at a private hospital.

The hospital was on the outskirts of Bellmont. It wasn’t very large and mainly focused on health checkups and chronic disease management. It didn’t handle complex surgeries.

The pay wasn’t high. She took home around $6,000 to $7,000 a month.

Sophie accepted the job.

She had no other choice.

Sophie stared at the screen for a long time.In August, someone told me that Sophie had found a job at a private hospital. The hospital was on the outskirts of Bellmont. She took home around $6,000 to $7,000 a month.Sophie accepted the job.She had no other choice. In September, Rebecca’s health finally collapsed. She hadn’t taken proper time to recover after her gallbladder surgery. She went straight back to work at the supermarket after being discharged, standing for seven or eight hours every day.Her body couldn’t take it.One day, she collapsed in the stockroom. Her coworkers called 911 and rushed her to the hospital. This time, it wasn’t Bellmont General Hospital. It was the local clinic in her hometown. The doctor there said she was severely anemic and malnourished and needed to be hospitalized for treatment and observati

The hallway was so quiet that I could hear the soft drip of the IV.Rebecca’s tears fell even faster, but she said nothing.“Take care of yourself.”I turned and walked away.A very soft “I’m sorry” came from behind me.I didn’t look back.Rebecca was discharged from the hospital.Sophie came to pick her up.I heard it from one of the nurses at the nurses’ station. On New Year’s Eve, Lily was on duty. She sent me a photo of the hospital cafeteria’s holiday dinner: four dishes and a soup—roast chicken, glazed ham, sautéed vegetables, garden salad, and chicken noodle soup. The caption read: “Happy New Year, Eliana! The cafeteria chef really outdid himself today!”I sent her a red envelope. She didn’t accept it.She said, “I got my paycheck. I sent $5,000 home for the New Year, and my mom was thrilled. Eliana, let me save up a little more, and I’ll treat you to a nice meal.”I smiled at her message. In March, Sophie’s clinical residency rotation entered a new stage. She b

Lily glanced at me and nodded.Rebecca’s surgery was scheduled for the following morning.Lily performed the surgery, with Dr. Natalie coming down from the city to supervise her.The surgery was a success. Rebecca’s gallbladder was removed without any complications. On the third day after surgery, Rebecca’s hospital bill came out to more than $20,000.She looked over the bill again and again before asking the nurse if she could be discharged. The nurse told her she had only undergone surgery three days ago. Her incision hadn’t healed yet, so she couldn’t leave.Rebecca fell silent. She folded the bill into a small square and clenched it tightly in her hand.I went to the hospital to pick up my medical examination report when Lily stopped me and led me into the doctors’ office. After closing the door, she said, “Eliana, Rebecca hasn’t paid for her surgery yet. She asked me today if she could pay the bill in installments.”“That has nothing to do with me.”Lily glanced at me.

Later, when she started her master’s and doctoral studies, her monthly allowance increased to $3,500, but she still ordered takeout.Once, I went to the city on business and stopped by to see her. Her dorm room was filled with empty takeout containers, and flies were buzzing around the room.I asked her why she didn’t cook.“I don’t have time for that. I’m so busy.”That day, I helped her clean up her dorm room. She sat on the bed playing on her phone without even looking up.“Eliana?”Lily’s voice pulled me back to the present.“Hmm?”“What are you spacing out about? Could you get the plates and utensils? They’re in the cabinet.”I opened the cabinet. The dishes were neatly arranged, with the large and small plates stacked separately. The utensils were organized neatly, and the spoons were kept in their own container.Little details like that made me feel that she was someone who took her life seriously. We had a pleasant dinner. On the last day of October, I received a p

In June, Lily was becoming more comfortable with her work at Bellmont General Hospital.Dr. Natalie Brooks came down from the city once a month to make rounds with her, review scans, and perform surgeries.Lily was improving rapidly. Dr. Brooks said that her current skill level had already caught up with that of attending physicians at top-tier hospitals in the city.Dr. James Carter discussed the possibility of securing a permanent position for Lily with me.I told him, “That’s the hospital’s decision. I’ll stay out of it.”Dr. Carter said, “She’s here because of you. Who else am I supposed to talk to?”I laughed. “All right. I’ll let her know.”That evening, I took Lily out to dinner at a new restaurant in Bellmont. She ordered three dishes and a soup, then ate two bowls of rice. She had good table manners. She wasn’t picky, and she never wasted food, finishing every last bite on her plate.I told her about the permanent position.“Really? That’s wonderful.”I looked at h

A week before the New Year, I went to the supermarket to buy groceries for the holiday.I saw Sophie’s mother at the checkout counter again. She had lost so much weight that she looked completely different. She was wearing a faded cotton coat, her hair was hastily tied at the back of her head, and her face was sallow. When she saw me, her hand trembled, and she almost dropped the scanner.I looked at her, and she looked back at me.Her eyes reddened. Her lips trembled for a long moment before she finally whispered, “Eliana… Sophie… she didn’t mean it. Please forgive her…”I said nothing. I paid for my groceries and walked out with my bags.As I reached the entrance, I heard her muffled sobs behind me.I stopped for a second but didn’t turn around. On New Year’s Eve, Lily sent me a message.“Eliana, Happy New Year. Thank you for letting me come to Bellmont. The fireworks here are beautiful.”She attached a photo of herself standing on the rooftop of Bellmont General Hospital,
