The glass door swung open. My boyfriend, Boaz Marshall, hurried out and grabbed my wrist.

"I can explain, Ari."

Three of my other childhood friends—Drake Owen, Evans Harding, and Finley Booker—followed Boaz out, showing none of the embarrassment one might expect after borrowing money from me.

But I could see four black cards resting on the table through the glass. They certainly weren't short on cash.

Just last month, Drake bought a new car worth 600 thousand dollars. Evans' investment account consistently held a seven-figure balance. Finley also often collected watches, each valued at well over 50 thousand dollars.

As for Boaz, he was even less strapped for cash.

The very day he borrowed my last 65 thousand dollars, he had just taken delivery of a new sports car.

"So, you borrowed the money I needed for my surgery, just to make sure I couldn't afford a plane ticket?" I asked in a trembling voice.

Cindy followed them out, a hiking backpack slung over her shoulders. She wore no makeup, her hair pulled back into a high ponytail, and her smile suggested she'd never known what it was like to be fatigued.

"Ari, they're just worried about your health. The weather on the snowy mountains is unpredictable. It's dangerous for you to come along."

My gaze fell to the hiking boots on her feet. They were the exact same pair I'd had my eye on for six months.

Ever since we started planning our post-graduation trip, I'd mentioned in our group chat, time and again, how much I wanted to see a real, snow-capped mountain. I had even put together a 20-page itinerary, bought a technical shell jacket, and followed online training videos every single day.

Boaz had promised that he'd watch the sunrise hit the snow-capped peaks with me once we reached the summit.

As it turned out, they remembered everything. They just decided Cindy should go in my place instead.

"I can take care of myself."

Finley let out a laugh.

"You?" he sneered. "You get winded just climbing two flights of stairs, and your pill organizer is bigger than your makeup bag whenever we travel. Don't we always have to take turns looking after you?

"But Cindy is different. She's backpacked through the Great Canyon all on her own, and she's even gone skydiving and scuba diving by herself. Traveling with her is completely stress-free."

Drake chimed in as well. "The last time we went camping, you had heart trouble in the middle of the night and woke everyone up. It was total chaos. We just wanted a relaxing graduation trip. Is that just too much to ask for?"

It was.

They could have said no to me.

They could have been upfront about finding me a burden, or even cut me out of the trip entirely.

Instead, they took turns making up excuses to drain the surgery fund I'd spent three years saving. Because they knew that as long as I had enough left in my account for a plane ticket, I wouldn't give up on that snow-capped mountain I'd longed to see.

Cindy pursed her lips. "Maybe I just shouldn't go."

"Don't even think about that," Boaz said, stopping her without hesitation. "The itinerary was designed based on your physical stamina. What's the point if you drop out now?"

He then looked at me and said, "Arianna, we're just holding onto the money for you for a bit. Just stay home and behave yourself. We'll give it back to you when we get back."

I held out my medical report.

"The doctor says I need to be admitted to the hospital within 48 hours."

He glanced at it but didn't take it.

"You've had this condition for years. Why does it suddenly become 'serious' right when we're about to leave?"

I slowly withdrew my hand.

When I was 18 years old and had my first episode, it was Boaz who carried me into the emergency room.

Back then, he told me my life was more important than anything else. But now, he was trading my life for a peaceful, uninterrupted vacation.

I turned on the voice recorder.

"You're saying that all 260 thousand dollars will be paid back within half a month, right?"

All four of them agreed at once, one after another. Boaz even reached out and ruffled my hair, saying, "Stop making a scene, Arianna Dawson. When we get back, we'll take you somewhere a bit safer for a mini-vacation instead."

I stepped back, dodging his hand.

My phone rang just then. It was the hospital nurse, calling to tell me I had only 48 hours left to settle the payment.

If I missed this hospital spot, there was no guarantee that I would ever get another chance for the surgery.

Boaz ran up to me, gasping for breath. "I promise I won't bother you on the trip, Ari. Can I just… Can I just follow from a distance? Is that okay?"I glanced at his boarding pass. He was sitting in the same row as me.So, this was what he meant by "following me from a distance"."Get a refund," I said curtly. He shook his head. "No. I've waited three months, Ari. I waited downstairs when you wouldn't answer my calls. I kept watch at the entrance when you wouldn't let me into the hospital."I've changed, Ari. I truly have!"Before I could respond, an announcement blared over the airport's PA system. There was an irregularity with Boaz's flight booking, and it required re-verification. Staff members hurried over and intercepted him before he could board. As it turned out, he had managed to get his ticket by pulling strings just to squeeze into the photography tour group. The tour organizer immediately revoked his spot.Boaz's expression darkened. "I can pay extra."The organiz

The hallway was deathly quiet.Boaz covered his face with his hands, unable to speak for a long time.Cindy looked at me and said, "I'm sorry, Arianna. I knew they didn't want to bring you along, but I had no idea they were using the money meant for your surgery. If I had known, I wouldn't have gone with them at all."I put away my phone. "You don't need to apologize on their behalf."She shook her head, saying, "No. I'm at fault, too. When they praised me for being 'independent' and compared me to you, I actually felt quite proud at the time. I never even bothered asking why you weren't coming along."She paused."Being brave doesn't mean taking someone else's place and then pretending not to notice it. And for that, I owe you this apology."She spoke with complete candor, and I responded with equal calm."Alright. I accept your apology."The four men froze in unison.Finley's eyes reddened as he exclaimed, "Why is it okay for her? Why are you only forgiving her?""Because

Drake was the first to sign the settlement agreement. Soon, the 265 thousand dollars, plus interest and legal fees, was transferred back into my account.Money had never been the issue for them. That wasn't the debt that was truly hard to repay.Finley set down his pen after signing the agreement, his eyes rimmed red. He said, "Arianna, we've known each other for so many years. Does it really have to come to this?"I was the one who defended you when you got bullied as a kid. Have you already forgotten about that?I looked at him and said, "I haven't. That's why I never once pressed you for the 50 thousand dollars you borrowed from me."Yet, when I told you that I needed to be hospitalized, you just complained that I was a killjoy."Finley opened his mouth, but no words came out.Drake shifted his chair forward. He said, "I didn't realize you were actually having a medical emergency at the hotel the other day. If I had known, I would have taken you to the hospital at once."I l

Boaz refused to leave. He blocked the nurses' station and demanded, "I just want to take one look at Arianna. I won't say a word. I won't even go inside."The nurse's expression remained cold. She said, "Sir, this is a hospital, not your home. The patient specifically said she doesn't want to see you. That means she doesn't want to see you."Finley slammed his hand on the counter. "She just came out of surgery. She's not in her right mind. We've known her for 18 years. What right do you have to stop us?""The fact that the patient is a consenting adult with the right to have her wishes respected," a woman's voice rang out from the end of the hospital hallway. It was my lead surgeon, Dr. White. She approached them with a medical chart in her hand. "And besides, who told you that she wasn't in her right mind?"All four men crowded around her at once."Doctor, how is she? When will she wake up?"Dr. White didn't answer. Instead, she held out a folded sheet of paper."These are the

Boaz's phone slipped from his hand. The screen hit the floor, leaving a jagged crack across it.Drake shot to his feet, exclaiming, "What do you mean, Arianna's heart stopped? What's the situation now? Did they manage to revive her?"The nurse didn't answer. She simply said, "That is confidential patient information. You have no right to inquire about it."Then, the line went dead.Silence descended on the four of them.Cindy pulled off her oxygen mask. "Ari had surgery?"Evans explained in a low voice. He said, "Heart surgery. It was supposed to be paid for with that 260 thousand dollars."Cindy stared at them as if seeing them in a new, ugly light for the first time. She asked in horror, "So, the reason she couldn't afford her surgery is because of the four of you?"Finley ran a hand through his hair, looking agitated. "We didn't actually spend the money. We were planning to pay her back as soon as we got back.""As soon as we got back?" Cindy echoed, letting out a sharp, in

Just as Boaz arrived at the town by the snow-capped mountains in the Northern Pole, he received a payment demand letter from my lawyer, Gustav Clayton. The summons simply stated that the amount of 265 thousand dollars had to be repaid within 24 hours, or a lawsuit would follow.Finley glanced at it and laughed. "Tsk, look at her, getting bold enough to hire a lawyer just to scare us."Drake didn't take it seriously either. He said, "She's only got about 300 dollars left in her account. How could she possibly afford a lawyer?"Evans, however, kept his eyes fixed on the attachment, his expression growing increasingly grim."There are the IOUs, audio recordings, bank transfer records, and everything. She attached them all. This is the real deal."The group fell silent.Of course, they could afford to pay it back. In fact, the money was still sitting untouched in each of their respective accounts. They hadn't borrowed the money because they were short on cash. They simply knew that
