Chapter 2

Author: Pumpkin King
The next day, I packed the belongings the four men had left at my place into four separate cardboard boxes.

There were Drake's basketball medals, Evans' debate competition manuscripts, Finley's cherished vintage game console, and every gift Boaz had ever given me.

I used to be so afraid of losing them. But now, I realized that these weren't the superfluous things I always thought they were—I was.

I went to the outdoor gear shop first and saw Drake helping Cindy pick out a pair of crampons.

She stepped onto the display platform with one foot, deftly fastened the straps, and hopped down from the three-foot-high ledge with a bright smile.

"These are great! If we run into any icy slopes, I'll be able to lend you all a hand if you need it!"

They laughed in unison. Drake gave her a thumbs-up and said, "That's our Cindy for you! You're someone we can always count on."

I recalled our last hiking trip, when Boaz wouldn't even let me walk along a flat stone path on my own. He claimed he was worried about my safety, yet the impatience in his eyes had grown more apparent with each passing day.

When he saw me, Drake's smile faded. He asked, "What are you doing here?"

I pushed the cardboard box toward him. "Returning your things."

He fished a medal out of the box, his brows knitting together.

"Weren't they fine where they were? What's this about now?"

"Didn't you say I was too clingy?" I shot back. "From now on, you can keep track of your own stuff."

Sensing the shift in the atmosphere, Cindy took the initiative and hoisted two backpacks onto her shoulders.

"You guys talk. I'll go pay at the counter."

Drake watched her brisk, retreating figure, his tone filled with admiration as he said, "Look at her. She never throws a tantrum, and she doesn't need anyone to coddle her."

I nodded.

"Well, you'd better cherish her, then."

Evans was at a café, double-checking their route and itinerary. I went up to him and returned his manuscripts, but his gaze locked onto the camera hanging from my shoulder.

"Leave the camera. Cindy wants to photograph the starry sky, and your lens is the best one for it."

"I bought this specifically for shooting snow-capped mountains," I replied.

Evans paused. "You're not going anyway. It'd just be a waste to leave it sitting there."

Last year, they asked me what I wanted for my birthday, and I told them not to bother with gifts. I just wanted us to see the snow-capped mountains together after graduation.

So I saved up for over half a year to buy this camera, just to capture a photo of the five of us standing before those snowy peaks.

Now, there was no longer a spot for me, and yet, the camera was still expected to document their joy with Cindy in my place.

"I'm not lending it to you."

Then, I set his cardboard box down and turned to leave.

That evening, Boaz showed up. He wore a brand-new ski suit and carried a container of soup that had already gone cold.

"Drake said you were giving everyone attitude again today. Can't you just try to be a little more like Cindy, Arianna? She didn't even let out a peep of pain when she fractured a bone during her first time skiing!"

I looked up at him. "So, you're saying that when I have a heart attack, I'm supposed to just endure that in silence, too?"

Boaz faltered. "That's not what I meant."

His phone buzzed with a new message just then. It was Cindy, saying she felt a bit nervous about ice climbing on her own.

Boaz stood up immediately, heading for the door while sending a voice message just to tease her. But just before stepping out, he glanced back at me and said, "Oh, and give me your passport. I don't want you buying a ticket and sneaking off to follow us."

As I watched him take my passport, I suddenly felt as though I didn't even have the strength to fight for it anymore.

Once the door closed, I revoked his status as my authorized next-of-kin and crossed it out on the form.

In the early hours of the morning, I received a call from a hospital in another city. A patient had canceled their surgery, and a slot had opened up for me. However, I had to arrive by tomorrow evening.

I gripped my phone tightly.

"Alright. I'll be there."

Boaz ran up to me, gasping for breath. "I promise I won't bother you on the trip, Ari. Can I just… Can I just follow from a distance? Is that okay?"I glanced at his boarding pass. He was sitting in the same row as me.So, this was what he meant by "following me from a distance"."Get a refund," I said curtly. He shook his head. "No. I've waited three months, Ari. I waited downstairs when you wouldn't answer my calls. I kept watch at the entrance when you wouldn't let me into the hospital."I've changed, Ari. I truly have!"Before I could respond, an announcement blared over the airport's PA system. There was an irregularity with Boaz's flight booking, and it required re-verification. Staff members hurried over and intercepted him before he could board. As it turned out, he had managed to get his ticket by pulling strings just to squeeze into the photography tour group. The tour organizer immediately revoked his spot.Boaz's expression darkened. "I can pay extra."The organiz

The hallway was deathly quiet.Boaz covered his face with his hands, unable to speak for a long time.Cindy looked at me and said, "I'm sorry, Arianna. I knew they didn't want to bring you along, but I had no idea they were using the money meant for your surgery. If I had known, I wouldn't have gone with them at all."I put away my phone. "You don't need to apologize on their behalf."She shook her head, saying, "No. I'm at fault, too. When they praised me for being 'independent' and compared me to you, I actually felt quite proud at the time. I never even bothered asking why you weren't coming along."She paused."Being brave doesn't mean taking someone else's place and then pretending not to notice it. And for that, I owe you this apology."She spoke with complete candor, and I responded with equal calm."Alright. I accept your apology."The four men froze in unison.Finley's eyes reddened as he exclaimed, "Why is it okay for her? Why are you only forgiving her?""Because

Drake was the first to sign the settlement agreement. Soon, the 265 thousand dollars, plus interest and legal fees, was transferred back into my account.Money had never been the issue for them. That wasn't the debt that was truly hard to repay.Finley set down his pen after signing the agreement, his eyes rimmed red. He said, "Arianna, we've known each other for so many years. Does it really have to come to this?"I was the one who defended you when you got bullied as a kid. Have you already forgotten about that?I looked at him and said, "I haven't. That's why I never once pressed you for the 50 thousand dollars you borrowed from me."Yet, when I told you that I needed to be hospitalized, you just complained that I was a killjoy."Finley opened his mouth, but no words came out.Drake shifted his chair forward. He said, "I didn't realize you were actually having a medical emergency at the hotel the other day. If I had known, I would have taken you to the hospital at once."I l

Boaz refused to leave. He blocked the nurses' station and demanded, "I just want to take one look at Arianna. I won't say a word. I won't even go inside."The nurse's expression remained cold. She said, "Sir, this is a hospital, not your home. The patient specifically said she doesn't want to see you. That means she doesn't want to see you."Finley slammed his hand on the counter. "She just came out of surgery. She's not in her right mind. We've known her for 18 years. What right do you have to stop us?""The fact that the patient is a consenting adult with the right to have her wishes respected," a woman's voice rang out from the end of the hospital hallway. It was my lead surgeon, Dr. White. She approached them with a medical chart in her hand. "And besides, who told you that she wasn't in her right mind?"All four men crowded around her at once."Doctor, how is she? When will she wake up?"Dr. White didn't answer. Instead, she held out a folded sheet of paper."These are the

Boaz's phone slipped from his hand. The screen hit the floor, leaving a jagged crack across it.Drake shot to his feet, exclaiming, "What do you mean, Arianna's heart stopped? What's the situation now? Did they manage to revive her?"The nurse didn't answer. She simply said, "That is confidential patient information. You have no right to inquire about it."Then, the line went dead.Silence descended on the four of them.Cindy pulled off her oxygen mask. "Ari had surgery?"Evans explained in a low voice. He said, "Heart surgery. It was supposed to be paid for with that 260 thousand dollars."Cindy stared at them as if seeing them in a new, ugly light for the first time. She asked in horror, "So, the reason she couldn't afford her surgery is because of the four of you?"Finley ran a hand through his hair, looking agitated. "We didn't actually spend the money. We were planning to pay her back as soon as we got back.""As soon as we got back?" Cindy echoed, letting out a sharp, in

Just as Boaz arrived at the town by the snow-capped mountains in the Northern Pole, he received a payment demand letter from my lawyer, Gustav Clayton. The summons simply stated that the amount of 265 thousand dollars had to be repaid within 24 hours, or a lawsuit would follow.Finley glanced at it and laughed. "Tsk, look at her, getting bold enough to hire a lawyer just to scare us."Drake didn't take it seriously either. He said, "She's only got about 300 dollars left in her account. How could she possibly afford a lawyer?"Evans, however, kept his eyes fixed on the attachment, his expression growing increasingly grim."There are the IOUs, audio recordings, bank transfer records, and everything. She attached them all. This is the real deal."The group fell silent.Of course, they could afford to pay it back. In fact, the money was still sitting untouched in each of their respective accounts. They hadn't borrowed the money because they were short on cash. They simply knew that
