Chapter 11

Author: Youth Lake
“Dad, this is unfair!” Mary screamed. “Why does Kiera get to inherit everything?”

Ronald snorted and said, “Because she knows me and cares about me. She managed to guess what matters the most to me.”

Ted gritted his teeth. “Peter’s family only got it right after two attempts! Charlie would’ve guessed it as well. Why can’t Charlie be the heir then?”

“Oh? Is that so? Where’s Charlie?”

Ted was at a loss for words. They had both felt that Charlie did not need to be at the funeral.

The glass almost fell from my hand. I had not expected Ronald to know about that.Ronald continued, “Whether it’s because you’re detail-oriented or simply because you care about your family, it shows that you’re smart and capable of taking over this huge family business.”I had just graduated from college not long ago. It was hard for me to find my footing when I first joined the company. Fortunately, Ronald was there to help me. I asked him if he truly did not want his children to inherit any of his fortune.Ronald was silent for a really long time. Finally, he sighed. “I was not lying back then. I really cared about them the most. If they cared for me, even just a little bit, I wouldn’t have deserted them.” On New Year’s Eve, I sent a text to Ted and Mary, asking them to come over for a family gathering. I was surprised that they did not show up.Ronald ate and drank like he was unaffected by any of it. But I could sense that he was really very sad.Hence, on New Yea

Ronald looked out of the window. “Peter, stop hiding, and come in.” My parents walked into the living room with their heads hung low. Finally, everyone was sitting together peacefully in the same room for once. Ronald said, “Peter, when you asked me for money for your house, do you know why I was not willing to lend it to you?”My father gaped but could not say anything. Ronald looked at me. I thought for a while and said carefully, “Was it because you thought my dad was after your fortune?”Ronald scoffed and said, “Your father is an idiot. Even if he wanted to, he doesn’t have the guts to do so. He wanted to buy a house for your mother’s brother as a wedding gift!” My mother’s face flushed red. She mumbled, “I come from a poor background. It’s normal to ask one’s family for help.” My father hung his head. “I figured we were rich and thought it wouldn’t take much to buy a small house just to make my wife happy.“I didn’t think much about it. I didn’t realize you’d be so a

Ronald held onto his pen and did not spare a glance at Ted. “Do I need your permission if I want to donate my own money?”Seeing that Ted was speechless, Patty quickly stepped forward to ease the tension. “Ronald, that’s not what Ted meant. See, you’re getting old. Kiera’s just a girl, after all. Let Charlie take care of you instead.” Patty quickly pushed Charlie forward. Charlie was staring at his phone as he said, “Grandpa, my mom said she’ll pay me ten thousand dollars a day for taking care of you.” Ted and Patty’s faces turned pale. Ronald sneered and said mockingly, “I don’t need your help.” Before Ted and his family left, Mary arrived with her family. Mary was a little smarter. She immediately sweet-talked Ronald and served him tea. She even massaged his shoulder. “Dad, you used to dote on me the most. I know it’s my fault for acting out this time. I’m just afraid that a certain someone will squander the fortune you spent years building.”Mary glanced at me. “In m

Her son was studying overseas, and she did not even inform him about the funeral.Ronald sneered and ended the whole drama.Everyone went home, but Ronald told me to stay. Before my mother left, she whispered to me, “Make sure you ask for more money from Ronald, just in case he changes his mind on the inheritance.” I pretended not to hear her. Ronald told me to meet him in his study. “Kiera, do you think I’ll give you all my fortune?”I said obediently, “Grandpa, you can give

Ted, who was standing closest to the coffin, leaped in shock and collapsed to the floor. He pointed at Ronald with a shaky hand. “Y-You’re alive!” Ronald slapped him. “Idiot! What are you afraid of? Weren’t you just kicking my coffin a minute earlier?”Ted held his hands to his face and almost cried. “Dad, you aren’t dead?”Ronald slapped him again. “Were you really hoping I was dead?”Mary forced out a smile. She walked over and said in mock gentleness, “Dad, you’ve come back to life! Do you want to go to the hospital?”Ronald slapped her too. “Weren’t you the one who said I was discharged from the hospital, so there was no need to take me there?”Mary held her cheek and looked anxious. My father walked over. Before he said anything, Ronald slapped him too. “You’re useless as the eldest of this bunch! You can’t even organize a funeral well, but you were eyeing my fortune!” My father held his cheek and did not dare to make a sound. Mr. Scott helped Ronald as he ste

It was a mess. Mary teared up. When the property certificate was taken away, she grew furious. She picked up a flower vase and threw it against Ronald’s photo. She yelled, “Why? He’s causing trouble even after his death! Even after his death, he doesn’t want us to live peacefully!”I looked at the coffin behind the photo and saw Ronald’s hands trembling. It seemed like he was holding himself back. Ted was even more unhinged. He rushed over and kicked the coffin.“Why do I have a father like you?“Every other parent out there prepares for their children’s future. Only you would ruin your own children’s lives! I hate you so much!” My dad stepped forward and tried to calm them down. “Both of you know how Dad was. So, why are you this angry?”Ted pushed him aside. “Do you know how difficult my life is? If he hadn’t stopped me from studying abroad, would I have ended up stuck in a regular job that barely pays a few thousand dollars a month?“The money I needed to study abroad wa
