Chapter 1

Mila's POV

As the twenty-four wedding cars continued backing up along the winding mountain road, my two bridesmaids, Chloe Wiseman and Ava Richards, frowned and started complaining.

“Mila, we’ve already backed up over twelve miles. If we keep going, we’ll end up right back at the house!”

“Exactly! This road isn’t even narrow. They could’ve easily gone around us!”

My heart sank.

Chloe and Ava got out of the car to speak up for me.

“Wade, don’t you know wedding cars aren’t supposed to double back?”

“That’s right. We’ve already backed up over twelve miles. How much farther do we have to go?”

Wade Chesney sensed the tension and strode over to lean against my window frame.

His face was right in front of mine. The slight sparkle in his eyes and his faint cedar scent had always been my weakness.

I stared at his face and felt nothing.

“Mila, hang in there a little longer. We’ll stop backing up once we reach the next fork in the road.”

I looked at Hayley Woodrow, who was smiling radiantly from the wedding car across from us, and spoke calmly.

“Whatever.”

Wade’s smile stiffened. He clearly had not expected that answer.

His best man, Tyler Krause, and the other groomsmen gathered around us.

“Don’t be upset, Mila. There isn’t enough room for the cars to pass here, so we had to back up.”

“Exactly. Our convoy is closer to the fork, so it’ll save time if we back up.”

“Yeah, that’s right. Mila, don’t give Wade a hard time. He’s in a tough spot, too.”

I snorted.

“Weren’t there two forks back there? Why didn’t you back up toward the other one?”

Tyler and the other groomsmen were at a loss for words. One after another, they turned to Wade.

Wade took my hand.

“It’s my fault, Mila. I didn’t plan the route properly. Once we get home, I’ll make it up to you myself.”

I thought, “Was it really poor planning, or had he deliberately taken this detour just to escort Hayley?”

I let out a slow breath and shook my head, unwilling to press the issue any further.

“No need for that, Wade.”

Tyler and the other groomsmen completely missed the sarcasm in my voice. They laughed and praised me instead.

“Mila really is so understanding and considerate of Wade.”

“Wow, look at you two showing off your love. We don’t even need to explain ourselves.”

They laughed and joked as they pulled Wade away, then went right back to directing our wedding convoy to make way for Hayley’s.

My phone suddenly started pinging with messages.

Hayley: Mila, I thought you were such a big deal. Who would’ve thought you’d still have to make way for me on your wedding day?

Hayley: See? I didn’t even have to lift a finger. Wade cleared every obstacle out of my way. Anyone who didn’t know better would think I was his bride!

She forwarded me a screenshot.

It was a post Wade had just made on social media.

[Since I can’t marry you, I’ll at least pave a flower-strewn road for you with nothing standing in your way.]

I looked down at the road.

It was covered in petals from Hayley’s favorite roses.

My nose stung as two trails of warm tears slid down my cheeks.

Barely holding back tears, I called Wade, who was at the back of the convoy.

“Wade, I’m done backing up.”

There was a brief silence on the other end.

“Mila, we’re almost—”

I hung up and took a deep breath.

“Wade, from this moment on, I will never make myself wait for you again,” I thought.

If you don’t want to see me right now, I’ll come back tomorrow!”The pedestrians frowned and pointed at her as they whispered among themselves.“I heard she was the victim in that case tw

The next day, Jeffrey and I went to the courthouse to make our marriage official.Messages kept pouring into my phone, so I opened them.[Mila, please come and see Wade. He’s been unconscious ever since his surgery.][Mila, Wade keeps calling your name. Please come and see him.][Wade got into that accident because of you, Mila! Don’t you have any conscience? Can’t you at least see him once?]The messages were from Wade’s friends. Some begged me, some blamed me, and others cursed me. But I no longer cared about any of it.I removed my SIM card and went to a phone store to cancel the number.Jeffrey held my hand without saying a word.On our way home, we spotted Hayley still wearing the wedding gown from the previous day. She was filthy from head to toe, and even the bandage around her ankle was caked in mud.As our car drew closer, I got a full view of her.All the diamond jewelry she had been wearing was gone, and even her earrings were missing, leaving nothing but two blo

Roses bloomed in abundance on both sides of the red carpet as Jeffrey held my hand and walked with me toward the altar.“Mila, I had to put everything together rather quickly today. I’m sorry you had to settle for less.”I shook my head so hard it nearly rattled.“This is already wonderful. I could tell how much thought you put into it.”There were not many guests, just Jeffrey’s closest and most trusted friends. As they watched us with warm smiles, Jeffrey dropped to one knee and held out a rare pink diamond ring.“Mila, we’ve known each other since we were kids. After all the twists and turns of the past ten years, I finally get to be with you.“Back then, I wanted to be the big brother you could rely on, your safe haven, and the person you could always come back to.“Now, will you give me the chance to take on a new role and spend the rest of my life taking care of you?”I nodded, tears welling in my eyes.Once the ring was on my finger, Jeffrey swept me into his arms and

I bought you new jewelry.”Chloe and Ava pulled a small case from the back seat. The moment they opened it, the diamonds nearly blinded us.“Mila, it’s a complete diamond set!”“Jeffrey, you really know how to spend!”“Mila, with such a handsome guy in front of you, how did you spend all these years clinging to that piece of garbage?”Before I could lift a finger, Chloe and Ava tossed my old accessories onto the road. After changing into my new look, I admired my reflection in the mirror. I brushed past them, leaving Wade and the groomsmen standing there dumbfounded.“What does she mean?”“She’s really leaving?”Wade stared at my retreating figure, then hurried after me and grabbed my hand. His voice held a barely perceptible note of panic.“Mila, what’s this supposed to mean?”“We’re breaking up. Exactly what I said.”“Could you stop? Can’t you see everyone’s waiting for you?”I looked back at the twenty-four wedding cars. Not a single person there was waiting for me.“They’re waiting for you to finish backing up for your childhood sweetheart, pave her way with rose petals, and then see her off.”Wade clenched his jaw, his guilt leaving him speechless. When I pulled my hand free and continued walking, he flew into a rage.“Mila Stephenson, if you walk away today, you can forget about ever coming back to me! You’ll regret this!”No one answered him. He could put on this farce by himself. The person coming for me sent me his location, and the marker drew c
