Chapter 2

Author: June Quint
I was about to open the door and get out when the rear of the car suddenly dropped, slamming my elbow and head against the door.

Sharp pain shot through me, and I sucked in a breath.

Screams erupted all around me as the scene descended into chaos.

“The rear wheel of the wedding car fell into the drainage ditch!”

“Someone, help! Hurry!”

“Mila, are you okay? Are you hurt?”

Chloe and Ava pounded on the window.

I touched my head and felt a warm trickle run from my forehead to my temple.

In the rearview mirror, I saw Wade running anxiously toward the wedding car.

He drew closer, but instead of stopping beside my tilted car, he made a beeline for the car across from us.

“Were you even paying attention? You scared Hayley so badly she’s shaking!”

Wade pointed a finger in the other driver’s face and berated him.

Everyone from both wedding parties exchanged glances and covered their mouths as they snickered at the tilted wedding car and at me sitting inside it.

I closed my eyes and prayed that person would come and take me away soon. I did not want to stay there a second longer.

The driver tried for a long time, but he still could not free the rear wheel from the ditch, so everyone began discussing how to lift the car out.

“Why don’t we have the bride get out first? What if she gets hurt again?”

“Yeah, that works. Better to play it safe on a day like this.”

After calming Hayley down, Wade returned with a stern expression and firmly rejected the suggestion.

“No. Mila can only get out at the destination. Getting out halfway would bring bad luck.”

Everyone fell silent and strained with all their might until they finally managed to lift the car out of the ditch.

Wade dusted off his hands and flashed a bright smile.

“Mila, you’re not hurt, are you? This was all my fault. Once the wedding is over, I’ll take you to Mooncrest Island for our honeymoon. How does that sound?”

He always knew how to soothe me with that almost unfairly gentle tenderness. But at that moment, I only wanted to get out of there.

“When we reach the next fork in the road, I’ll go back on my—”

“Wade, Hayley twisted her ankle!”

Without hesitation, Wade left me behind and rushed toward the car across from us, as if he were the groom of that wedding convoy.

Chloe and Ava were shaking with anger.

“If she twisted her ankle, she should just rest.”

“Is the other groom completely useless? He can’t do anything. The second something goes wrong, he just calls Wade!”

“Mila, if you weren’t so dead set on marrying him, I’d slap him twice and drive over to get you myself.”

I simply smiled and said nothing.

It would not be much longer. The person coming to get me was already on the way.

A short while later, Wade returned with a frown after crouching beside Hayley’s wedding car to check her injury.

He shoved Chloe and Ava aside and yanked the car door open. His voice was urgent and left no room for argument.

“Hayley twisted her ankle. You studied medicine. Get out and help her.”

I gripped the back of the passenger seat to resist his pull as Chloe and Ava stepped between us.

“Wade, you just said that a bride getting out halfway would bring bad luck. Did you forget that already?”

“Exactly. It’s just a twisted ankle. It’s not like she’s dying. Just put an ice pack on it.”

“Can you stop making Mila suffer for Hayley all the time?”

Tears welled up in my eyes as I heard Chloe and Ava defend me.

But Wade ignored them completely. He only pulled me with increasing force.

“Mila, this is an emergency. Can you put that superstitious nonsense aside for once?”

“Wade, I don’t want to.”

A tear landed on the back of his hand, and he flinched as if it had burned him. But the next moment, his voice was cold again.

“Please, I’m begging you. I’ll give you whatever you want. Anything, okay? Hayley can’t handle pain.”

I looked into his stubborn, worried eyes and gave a bitter smile.

“Anything I want?”

“Yes.”

“Break up with me.”

The next day, Jeffrey and I went to the courthouse to make our marriage official.Messages kept pouring into my phone, so I opened them.[Mila, please come and see Wade. He’s been unconscious ever since his surgery.][Mila, Wade keeps calling your name. Please come and see him.][Wade got into that accident because of you, Mila! Don’t you have any conscience? Can’t you at least see him once?]The messages were from Wade’s friends. Some begged me, some blamed me, and others cursed me. But I no longer cared about any of it.I removed my SIM card and went to a phone store to cancel the number.Jeffrey held my hand without saying a word.On our way home, we spotted Hayley still wearing the wedding gown from the previous day. Roses bloomed in abundance on both sides of the red carpet as Jeffrey held my hand and walked with me toward the altar.“Mila, I had to put everything together rather quickly today. I’m sorry you had to settle for less.”I shook my head so hard it nearly rattled.“This is already wonderful. I could tell how much thought you put into it.”There were not many guests, just Jeffrey’s closest and most trusted friends. As they watched us with warm smiles, Jeffrey dropped to one knee and held out a rare pink diamond ring.“Mila, we’ve known each other since we were kids. After all the twists and turns of the past ten years, I finally get to be with you.“Back then, I wanted to be the big brother you could rely on, your safe haven, and the person you could always come back to.“Now, will you give me the chance to take on a new role and spend the rest of my life taking care of you?”I nodded, tears welling in my eyes.Once the ring was on my finger, Jeffrey swept me into his arms and

I brushed past them, leaving Wade and the groomsmen standing there dumbfounded.“What does she mean?”“She’s really leaving?”Wade stared at my retreating figure, then hurried after me and grabbed my hand. His voice held a barely perceptible note of panic.“Mila, what’s this supposed to mean?”“We’re breaking up. Exactly what I said.”“Could you stop? Can’t you see everyone’s waiting for you?”I looked back at the twenty-four wedding cars. Not a single person there was waiting for me.“They’re waiting for you to finish backing up for your childhood sweetheart, pave her way with rose petals, and then see her off.”Wade clenched his jaw, his guilt leaving him speechless. When I pulled my hand free and continued walking, he flew into a rage.“Mila Stephenson, if you walk away today, you can forget about ever coming back to me!
