Chapter 2

작가: Forest Isle
Jenson didn't look back. "I want that signed document on my desk by 9:00 am tomorrow."

At 9:00 am the next day, I placed the unsigned document in front of him.

He glanced at the empty line. "Not done throwing your tantrum?"

He tapped the signature line with a silver fountain pen.

That pen was a gift from him when I first joined the translation academy. After I resigned for his sake, the pen stayed in his study.

Now, Aleena's name was engraved on it.

I reached out and picked it up.

Seeing that, Jenson frowned. "Don't touch that. Aleena's used to using it."

"It's mine."

"It's just a pen."

Jenson pulled a black card from his drawer and pushed it toward me. "Last night's score doesn't count. Take this and buy yourself something nice."

I didn't take it. "Did you engrave her name on it because she's better suited for it, too?"

Aleena walked in holding a cup of coffee. She stopped by the door as she heard my question. "Eve, I'm so sorry. Jenson told me it was just company stock. I had no idea it meant something special to you."

She immediately pulled off the pen cap. "I'll give it back right now."

Jenson caught her hand. "You use it for all your meeting notes. Keep it."

He looked over at me. "Eve, you used to be less petty."

I slowly let go of the pen.

Seven years ago, he waited four hours for me in the rain outside the translation academy. When he handed me that fountain pen in the downpour, he told me I shone brighter than anyone else when standing on stage.

Later, he claimed it was unbecoming for a wife to constantly travel for work, so I gave up my career.

Now, he remembered which pen Aleena preferred but completely forgot why it belonged to me in the first place.

His assistant knocked and walked in, saying, "Mr. Clarke, the Dalmore delegation has arrived."

Jenson stood up and adjusted his cuffs. "Eve, come to the conference room. Aleena just took over and isn't fluent with interpretation yet. Cover for her."

I didn't move. "What am I attending as?"

"My wife."

"But at the anniversary gala, you said I wasn't involved in the project."

Jenson checked his watch, visibly impatient. "We're family. Why keep score over who did what?"

Once the meeting started, Aleena mistranslated three key numbers in a row.

The delegate's expression darkened, and he demanded directly in Dalmorian whether the person in charge was even qualified.

Aleena clutched the documents tightly and looked to me for help.

Jenson spoke up coldly. "Eve, translate."

"This is her project," I replied.

"Now is not the time to be stubborn."

"Last night, you said she was better suited for the role than I am."

Silence fell over the conference table.

Jenson lowered his voice. "Help her secure this contract, and your score goes back up to 98."

I looked at him for a moment before taking the document anyway.

It wasn't for the score. Over 30 colleagues had poured six months of hard work into that contract.

When the meeting ended, the delegate came over to shake my hand. "Ms. Hudson, we were under the impression you were leading this project."

Before I could answer, Jenson cut in. "She's only helping out temporarily."

Smiling, Aleena added, "Eve is a homemaker. She's been out of the field for a while, so she occasionally steps in to keep her skills sharp."

The Dalmore delegate looked surprised. "Ms. Hudson, with talent like yours, staying at home is a waste."

Jenson's face went cold. "She isn't suited for high-intensity work."

He took the contract out of my hands in front of everyone and handed it to Aleena. "Good job today."

That praise wasn't meant for me.

During lunch, Aleena raised her glass in celebration. "Eve, let me toast to you. I couldn't have landed this deal without you."

I placed my hand over my glass. "I'm not drinking."

Jenson looked over. "She's making an effort. Don't be ungrateful."

"I can't drink right now."

Aleena blinked. "You're not pregnant, are you?"

My fingers tightened into a ball.

Jenson chuckled softly. "She can barely manage her own emotions. She isn't ready to be a mother."

He pushed the wine glass back toward me. "Drink up, and we'll put yesterday behind us."

As I stared at the red wine swirling in the glass, a wave of nausea hit my stomach. "What if I actually am pregnant?"

"Then we evaluate first. If your physical health, emotional state, and genetic factors hit a 90, then we consider keeping it."

I stared at Jenson, suddenly feeling like the man in front of me was a complete stranger.

Aleena laughed softly to smooth things over. "Jenson just has high standards for the baby's sake. Eve, don't overthink it."

I picked up the glass.

Just as Jenson's brow relaxed, I poured the wine into a nearby ice bucket. "I'm not drinking this. And I'm not signing that authorization form either."

His face turned completely cold. "Eve Hudson, you're going to pay for this."

He had accounting freeze all the secondary cards under my name and confiscated my car keys.

When the lunch ended, it was raining outside. He held an umbrella over Aleena as he walked her to the car, leaving without a single word to me.

Standing on the steps, I dialed my former mentor, Lucy Murray. "Ms. Murray, is the reinstatement evaluation you mentioned last time still open?"

There was a moment of silence on the other end.

"Eve, didn't you say your physical and mental state made you unfit for work and asked me never to contact you again?"

I froze. "I never said that."

Lucy quickly forwarded me an email.

It was sent from my email address, but right next to the signature at the bottom was Jenson's personal seal.

On the launch day of the Ardovia regional branch, I led the first round of candidate interviews. After finishing her practice interpretation, a young lady asked nervously, "Ms. Hudson, what score did I get?"I closed my notebook. "Why must there be a score?""I'm just afraid I'm not good enough.""You conveyed the original meaning accurately and handled unexpected hiccups well. Whatever fell short, you can just go back and practice," I replied. She still looked a bit anxious. "So… am I hired?"I handed her a staff badge. "Welcome aboard."The young lady froze for a few seconds before taking it with a wide smile.Reed stood by the doorway, holding two bags of breakfast. "Ms. Hudson, you skipped breakfast. You failed your assessment.""How many points are deducted?""Zero." He pressed a warm cup of soy milk into my hand. "Just remember next time."I chuckled softly and took a bite of my croissant.Life didn't fall apart after I left. I simply picked up my career again and sta

The emergency meeting at Halverton Group dragged on for six hours. By the time Jenson walked out of the conference room, he was no longer the CEO.The board concluded that he had abused his authority for years, favored his own people, and caused losses across multiple projects. On top of that, the confidential company files Aleena leaked left the company facing astronomical damage claims. His father slammed the resignation letter right into his chest. "You dragged the entire company down for a woman! Are you satisfied now?"Jenson picked the letter up from the floor. "I'm sorry."That night, he came to see me to sign the final share restructuring agreement.I scanned through the terms. "You're giving up 10% of your personal shares?""To compensate the overseas operations team who were fired," Jenson replied."And the board agreed?""They had no reason to refuse."I signed my name and passed the document back to him.Jenson remained seated, making no move to leave. News of Aleena's suspension spread through Halverton Group like wildfire. She barged into the clarification press conference unannounced."Eve sent every single email herself!" She held up a thick stack of printed materials. "She was planning to leave Mr. Clarke all along, so she intentionally pinned the blame on me!"Reporters shoved microphones in my face. "Ms. Hudson, what evidence do you have?"I turned on the projector and said, "The IP address used to log in and send that first email traces back directly to the CEO's office at Halverton Group."The screen displayed the server login location for the office.Aleena's expression froze. "Anyone can walk into that office!""Which is why I filed for handwriting and official seal authenticity forensic tests."I flipped to the next slide. "The personal seal used at the bottom of that email had a faint scratch along its outer edge. That defect only appeared on Jenson's personal seal during Aleena's third month at the company."Su

Six months later, I wrapped up an international negotiation in Norlandia.Reed Bolton handed me a thermal flask. "The doctor told you to cut back on coffee.""I only had one cup today," I replied."You said the exact same thing last week."I took the flask with a light chuckle. "Don't be so controlling, Mr. Bolton.""I'm not. I'm just reminding you." He passed me the meeting minutes. "No one has the right to score your judgment, myself included."I looked down at the documents. After returning to work, I still found myself reflexively tweaking every pause in my translations.I had asked Reed how I did after my first conference back. He simply said, "Getting it done is the answer."Only then did I slowly come to realize that not everyone stood around holding a measuring tape, waiting for me to slip up.Reed's assistant pushed the door open. "Ms. Hudson, the delegation from Halverton Group has arrived."I looked up.Jenson stood outside the doorway, looking noticeably thinner

Jenson called my number for seven days straight without getting through. On the eighth day, he finally reached my mentor, Lucy. "Where is she?""In what capacity are you asking?" Lucy asked coldly in response."I'm her husband.""The divorce papers were already delivered to you.""I didn't sign them," Jenson said."That's your problem."Jenson suppressed the anger in his tone. "She just lost the baby and needs to be taken care of. I'm bringing her back."Lucy asked. "And where were you when she needed taking care of the most?"The line went dead.He stood outside the translation academy all day long.Years ago, whenever I worked late into the night, he used to wait for me in the exact same spot.Back then, I would run out into the rain, and he would open his umbrella, pressing a warm cup of coffee into my hands. He used to say, "You come before everything else."Now, that same umbrella was soaked in rain, but no one ran toward him anymore. That night, Aleena blocked his

When Jenson returned home, the first thing he saw was the document sitting on the desk.Without turning on the lights, he flipped straight to the final page. "Compliant after all," he muttered. However, his hands froze the moment he read the title. It wasn't the authorization form. It was a divorce agreement.Half of the study was completely empty. My books, clothes, and documents were all gone.Jenson pulled out his phone to call me, but only the automated operator answered.Aleena stepped into the room behind him, whispering, "Eve's probably just trying to scare you. Go comfort her, and she'll come around.""She won't leave," Jenson said, sounding like he was trying to convince himself. "She has no job and no income of her own. Where could she possibly go?"He pushed open the bedroom door and saw the box resting on the nightstand. The wedding ring sat right on top. Beneath it lay the ultrasound photo.Jenson held the photograph tightly, remaining silent for a long time."Wh
