Chapter 3

Author: Cece West
I pulled the divorce agreement and the defendant's affidavit of consent from the stack of documents.

Then, I gritted my teeth and struggled to make my way down the stairs.

Blood trickled from between my legs and soaked the hem of my dress, leaving a bloody trail on the floor.

Just as I lost consciousness, I thought I saw one of the maids running toward me in a panic.

When I woke up again, I realized that I was at the hospital. The dilapidated hospital equipment and grimy surroundings immediately told me that this was not the Famiglia's private hospital.

The maid, Alma Romani, explained, "Donna, Don Alfonso took all the private doctors to the remote outpost, so I had no choice but to bring you to this community hospital."

I thanked her for her help.

A doctor walked in just then, looking stern as he firmly chided, "Didn't your previous doctor warn you? You suffered a gunshot wound years ago that left your body frail and weak.

"You need rest and a calm state of mind during your pregnancy. You can't afford to experience any shock or stress. If this happens again, the baby might not survive."

My face was so extremely pale that the doctor couldn't bear to continue chiding me anymore. He softened his tone and said, "Your baby needs a safe and peaceful environment to grow up healthy."

The doctor's words kept replaying in my mind even after I was discharged.

I knew clearly that I had to speed up my plans to leave for the sake of my child.

I submitted the divorce papers and affidavit before heading home.

However, when I arrived at home, I saw that Alfonso's bodyguards were already stationed at the door.

I was surprised. This was highly unusual.

Normally, whenever he went to look at Bianca, he would stay away for a few days before returning home. But this time, he was barely gone for half a day.

I pushed the door open in confusion. But soon, I quickly understood why.

Alfonso was sitting on the leather couch in the living room with Bianca cowering pitifully in his arms. She was wearing a white dress exactly the same as mine.

She lifted her pitiful face and looked at me, carefully asking Alfonso, "Don, do you think that Donna will not like it if you brought me home like this?

"I don't want you to be troubled because of me. Maybe you should send me back to the outpost instead."

Bianca was always like this.

She would always subtly cast me as a madwoman who cared nothing for Alfonso's dignity with her fragile appearance and feigned vulnerability.

And Alfonso, who was usually calm, wise, and composed, completely lost his judgment right after she saved his life. It wouldn't be the first time he chose to believe her instead of me.

I shut the door quietly behind me. However, it still drew their attention at once.

Alfonso casually released his arm from around Bianca's waist, showing no shame for his behavior.

Meanwhile, Bianca shrank back physically but met my gaze with a look of defiance.

I pretended not to see them and headed straight for the stairs. I wanted to pack up my suitcase and other documents. I didn't have time to play the part of the villainess in their melodrama.

Yet, my indifference made Alfonso extremely dissatisfied.

He called out to me, stopping me in my tracks. His voice was tinged with suppressed fury.

"Bianca was feeling unwell. I brought her back to receive proper treatment. There's no point in you getting jealous of her like this."

I looked back at him calmly without a hint of care or concern on my face.

"Of course. She's absolutely welcome to stay. Shall I get the maids to prepare a room for her?"

Alfonso and Bianca were stunned. They were highly suspicious of my behavior.

But since they didn't say a thing, I assumed that there wasn't a need for the extra room, so I continued walking up the stairs without glancing to the side.

I then got out my suitcase and began to pack.

I sat in the living room and brought out a new agreement before handing it to Alfonso. I then said calmly and reasonably, "You should have already found out the reason for my gunshot wound."When Bianca took a bullet for you, you gave her love and power. So, what are you planning to give me now that you know that I also took a bullet for you?"Alfonso had a pained and desperate expression on his face. He crouched over next to me and rested his forehead in my lap, begging me to stop talking."I can give you everything. Love, power, and even my life. I'll give you whatever you want. I just don't want you to leave me."Debora, I'll admit that I was moved by Bianca in the past, but I swear that I've never stopped loving you. You're the only one who can be my wife and my Donna…"He soon broke down in tears.I looked at him, but my emotions didn't stir at all. From the moment he began lying to me and chose Bianca over me in the past, I had already expected us to end up like this."I

I pulled my hand away from Alfonso's grip and rested it against my belly instead, saying nothing.I had kept the truth from him back then because I loved him and didn't want him to put himself in danger for my sake. But if I were to explain it to him now, it would only prolong our entanglement more. And, at this point, it was pointless.Since he wasn't able to get the truth from me, he went straight back to the Famiglia estate that night.I didn't know if he just wanted to get to the bottom of the matter or if he had simply thought of Bianca, the other woman who'd also taken a bullet for him. After all, this was the deepest wound that she had inflicted on our relationship. I simply couldn't trust him again. Before he came back, I was soon wheeled into the delivery room. And just as the doctor predicted, the scar tissue ruptured during the labor process.Blood kept spilling from my body, and I felt the chill creeping into me.Amidst the doctors' urgent shouts, I opened my eyes

The next time I met Alfonso again was four months later. That day, I had just finished a medical training session and was walking out of the classroom building with my neatly organized stack of notes in my hand. Then I spotted an extremely familiar black sedan parked in the parking lot.The window rolled down, revealing Alfonso's tense face.He looked far more haggard than when I'd left. His eyes were deeply sunken, and his gaze was fixed on me.I pretended not to see him and kept walking toward the bus stop without breaking my stride. He quickly pushed open the car door and stepped out, reaching out to grab my wrist."Debora, come home with me."I dodged his hand and said in a flat yet firm tone, "We're divorced. I'm not going back with you."His hand froze mid-air. I could see the emotions churning in his eyes before he finally looked at me with a resigned expression. He sighed as if he was dealing with an unreasonable child."I promise never to let Bianca appear before y

Alfonso's expression froze. Then, he let out a cold, mocking laugh."There's no need for tactics like this just to get my attention, Debora. No one would ever help you get a divorce behind my back without my permission."Now stop the nonsense and come back inside. You are carrying my heir. You cannot bear to divorce me for real."His deep, dark eyes fixed on mine. They used to be filled with affection for me, but now, there was nothing but threat.I knew that there was no point trying to talk to him anymore. So, I dragged out my suitcase with me and continued walking out.Alma hurried up to stop me, but Alfonso didn't move a muscle. He stopped Alma and said, "Let her go. Once she's suffered enough out there, she'll come back crawling to me and do exactly as she's told."Someone asked what he'd do if I never returned. He just scoffed and said, "Mark my words, she will come back eventually."He was certain that I was a nobody without the Castagna Famiglia, and that there would b

Alfonso soon hurried up after me.He scrutinized my expression, searching for some emotion on my face."How was the prenatal checkup?" he asked. This was the first time he had ever asked about the baby since finding out about my pregnancy."It was fine."It would probably be even better if I could stay as far away as possible from him and Bianca.Alfonso wore an "I knew it" expression on his face as he said, "Bianca was right all along. You really were just faking your pain and illness just to get my attention. "You looked so in pain yesterday that you nearly had me fooled. I thought something had indeed gone wrong with the baby."You're now pregnant with my heir. You should stop joking around with your health like that. If anything actually went wrong, I swear that you'll never be able to handle the consequences."I had no intention of continuing this conversation with him and just nodded in acknowledgment."I know that Bianca needs your company more.
