Chapter 4

Author: Cece West
Alfonso soon hurried up after me.

He scrutinized my expression, searching for some emotion on my face.

"How was the prenatal checkup?" he asked.

This was the first time he had ever asked about the baby since finding out about my pregnancy.

"It was fine."

It would probably be even better if I could stay as far away as possible from him and Bianca.

Alfonso wore an "I knew it" expression on his face as he said, "Bianca was right all along. You really were just faking your pain and illness just to get my attention.

"You looked so in pain yesterday that you nearly had me fooled. I thought something had indeed gone wrong with the baby.

"You're now pregnant with my heir. You should stop joking around with your health like that. If anything actually went wrong, I swear that you'll never be able to handle the consequences."

I had no intention of continuing this conversation with him and just nodded in acknowledgment.

"I know that Bianca needs your company more. I won't trouble you with the baby anymore after this. I'll be taking good care of it."

"Good," he said. "That's more like how a proper Donna should behave."

He thought that the conflict was finally resolved and reverted to his usual condescending gentleness.

"You will stop acting out of spite with me now, Debora. You know that Bianca is nothing but a little embellishment in my life. She will never take your place."

No sooner had he said that than a scream from Bianca rang out from the living room downstairs. He immediately let go of me and ran back downstairs.

I sneered.

Alfonso said that she was just an "embellishment", but whenever he had to choose between her and me, he would always obviously choose the former.

For the next few days, Alfonso openly kept Bianca right by his side. I stopped paying attention to them and just focused entirely on waiting for the divorce decree to be finalized.

On the day I left, I was wheeling my suitcase behind me when I ran into my personal styling team at the doorway.

Alma explained awkwardly, "Donna, they are here to attend to Signorina Parisi. Don said that he was taking her to a Famiglia banquet."

I was just about to step aside to let them in when I heard Alfonso's displeased voice from behind me.

"What is this tantrum about now, Debora?

"Bianca was kind enough to step in and attend the banquet on your behalf, concerned that your pregnancy would make it inconvenient for you. And yet, you're planning to run away from home over such a trivial matter?"

Before I could respond, Bianca's panicked voice chimed in.

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have taken Donna's place. Don Alfonso, please rescind your order. I don't want Donna to get mad at you or harbor any resentment toward you just because of this."

He got even angrier after hearing what she said. He absolutely refused to tolerate anyone challenging his authority.

"Resentment? Tolerance and forbearance are the virtues expected of a Donna. And since she holds this role, she ought to embody them rather than throwing unreasonable tantrums just because she thinks she can walk all over my head."

He took a few steps forward, his imposing stature looming over me as he looked at me with eyes full of disappointment.

"If you refuse to learn to be sensible, Debora, I will have you locked up to teach you some discipline. Don't you force me into doing it."

"Of course you don't need to do it," I said with a calm, light smile on my face. "Because we're already divorced. What you do has absolutely nothing to do with me anymore."

The next time I heard about Alfonso, he had already been stripped of his Don position. The Famiglia had long been dissatisfied with his prolonged absence from the Famiglia's internal affairs, and Bianca also exposed intimate photos of him online after being driven to desperation.Alfonso had no choice but to step down as he was besieged on all sides by the massive scandal. He asked to see me once last time, but Leo had only just fallen asleep, and I didn't want the noise of my getting up to disturb him. After that, Alfonso vanished. Nobody knew where he went. I only heard that he'd done everything in his power to protect Leo and me before he stepped down, drawing a clear line between us and the Famiglia's infighting.I felt nothing about it. I simply continued my studies as planned and eventually became a surgeon. At times, Leo would ask me about his father, and I would answer him truthfully.Five years later, while volunteering with a medical team providing free aid to the n

I sat in the living room and brought out a new agreement before handing it to Alfonso. I then said calmly and reasonably, "You should have already found out the reason for my gunshot wound."When Bianca took a bullet for you, you gave her love and power. So, what are you planning to give me now that you know that I also took a bullet for you?"Alfonso had a pained and desperate expression on his face. He crouched over next to me and rested his forehead in my lap, begging me to stop talking."I can give you everything. Love, power, and even my life. I'll give you whatever you want. I just don't want you to leave me."Debora, I'll admit that I was moved by Bianca in the past, but I swear that I've never stopped loving you. You're the only one who can be my wife and my Donna…"He soon broke down in tears.I looked at him, but my emotions didn't stir at all. From the moment he began lying to me and chose Bianca over me in the past, I had already expected us to end up like this."I

I pulled my hand away from Alfonso's grip and rested it against my belly instead, saying nothing.I had kept the truth from him back then because I loved him and didn't want him to put himself in danger for my sake. But if I were to explain it to him now, it would only prolong our entanglement more. And, at this point, it was pointless.Since he wasn't able to get the truth from me, he went straight back to the Famiglia estate that night.I didn't know if he just wanted to get to the bottom of the matter or if he had simply thought of Bianca, the other woman who'd also taken a bullet for him. After all, this was the deepest wound that she had inflicted on our relationship. I simply couldn't trust him again. Before he came back, I was soon wheeled into the delivery room. And just as the doctor predicted, the scar tissue ruptured during the labor process.Blood kept spilling from my body, and I felt the chill creeping into me.Amidst the doctors' urgent shouts, I opened my eyes

The next time I met Alfonso again was four months later. That day, I had just finished a medical training session and was walking out of the classroom building with my neatly organized stack of notes in my hand. Then I spotted an extremely familiar black sedan parked in the parking lot.The window rolled down, revealing Alfonso's tense face.He looked far more haggard than when I'd left. His eyes were deeply sunken, and his gaze was fixed on me.I pretended not to see him and kept walking toward the bus stop without breaking my stride. He quickly pushed open the car door and stepped out, reaching out to grab my wrist."Debora, come home with me."I dodged his hand and said in a flat yet firm tone, "We're divorced. I'm not going back with you."His hand froze mid-air. I could see the emotions churning in his eyes before he finally looked at me with a resigned expression. He sighed as if he was dealing with an unreasonable child."I promise never to let Bianca appear before y

Alfonso's expression froze. Then, he let out a cold, mocking laugh."There's no need for tactics like this just to get my attention, Debora. No one would ever help you get a divorce behind my back without my permission."Now stop the nonsense and come back inside. You are carrying my heir. You cannot bear to divorce me for real."His deep, dark eyes fixed on mine. They used to be filled with affection for me, but now, there was nothing but threat.I knew that there was no point trying to talk to him anymore. So, I dragged out my suitcase with me and continued walking out.Alma hurried up to stop me, but Alfonso didn't move a muscle. He stopped Alma and said, "Let her go. Once she's suffered enough out there, she'll come back crawling to me and do exactly as she's told."Someone asked what he'd do if I never returned. He just scoffed and said, "Mark my words, she will come back eventually."He was certain that I was a nobody without the Castagna Famiglia, and that there would b
