Chapter 2

Author: Cece West
The next morning, I headed downstairs. I was halfway down the stairs when loud, blaring, and aggressive rock music assaulted my eardrums.

The intense sensory shock made my stomach cramp and my head spin.

I clutched my belly with one hand and the stairs' bannister with the other, screaming, "Turn that music off!"

The rest of the Famiglia members, who were dancing along to the music, merely curled their lips in disdain and paid me no heed.

Alfonso sat at the head of the table with a wineglass in his hand.

He sipped at the wine with an air of indifference, only ordering for the music to be stopped when he saw me slumping onto the stairs in pain.

"Stop the music."

The dining area went completely silent at once.

I clutched at my throbbing stomach, unable to stand up due to the extreme pain.

Alfonso just glared at me coldly and said indifferently, "I've already kicked Bianca out of the house as you wished, Debora. There is no need to keep harping on something as insignificant as this.

"It doesn't mean anything just because we're playing her favorite music at home. You are still the Donna of the Famiglia. You're still the mother of my heir. You should know better than to make a fuss like this."

I was covered in a sheen of cold sweat. I curled up on the steps to try and ease the discomfort in my stomach, looking like I was crying.

Alfonso probably still thought that I was merely kicking up a fuss like I used to in the past.

He probably thought that it was like when I lost control of my emotions and confronted him after finding a cheap cigar—a gift from Bianca—tucked among his prized collection.

Or, maybe he thought it was like when I found out he'd appointed Bianca to a position that the Famiglia had never allowed a woman to hold.

He only said, "Bianca is nothing like you. She's braver than you and worth making an exception for."

Later, I finally asked if he'd fallen in love with her.

He didn't deny it.

"I'll admit that I'm moved by her feelings for me. However, we never kissed, and we never slept together."

He then looked at me expectantly, as though he was convinced of his own candor.

"Debora, she was willing to take a bullet for me. Would you ever have done the same?"

At that moment, I suddenly didn't know how to go about salvaging our marriage anymore.

Yet, just on the verge of a breakdown, the Famiglia doctor told me that I was pregnant.

Upon hearing the news, Alfonso sat in silence all night before sending Bianca away to an outpost in another region.

I once believed that the birth of our child would be our chance for a fresh start between us.

So, I stopped arguing with him and stopped prying into his matters. I simply wanted to carry the baby to term safely and healthily.

But later on, I found out about the extra flight path Alfonso added to his private jet and caught Bianca's familiar scent on him.

I also realized that my prenatal checkups were always scheduled after Bianca's medical checks.

At that time, I understood with crystal clarity that he and I could never go back to how things used to be between us anymore.

"Al, my stomach hurts. Please call the Famiglia doctor for me," I said, trying to suppress the tremor in my voice from the pain so that I could still maintain the composure he demanded of me.

Alfonso frowned as he judged me with his gaze, scrutinizing me to see if I was feigning the pain just to escape his reprimand.

Soon, he got up and headed toward me.

Just as he was about to pick me up, his phone rang in his pocket.

His stern expression softened instantly, and he answered the call with a tenderness he probably never even knew he possessed.

"Wait, you're not feeling well? Let the medical team examine you first. I'll be right there."

Then, he strode toward the upper floors, where his private jet was parked on the rooftop.

Bianca had managed to lure him away with just a simple phone call like that.

He never even suspected her of anything nor asked any further questions.

Just as he was about to walk past me, I reached out and grabbed his pant leg to stop him.

Alfonso's face darkened at once. He glared coldly at me.

"Debora. I am going to save someone. This is not the time for you to throw a tantrum."

"No," I said, picking up the documents scattered beside me before handing them to him. My hands were still trembling hard. "I have a prenatal checkup today. I need you to sign this."

He paused at once, a rare flash of guilt crossing his eyes. He didn't say another word and quickly signed his name on every signature line.

Just before he left, he showed me a very rare moment of tenderness and said, "Wait for me to come back."

I sat in the living room and brought out a new agreement before handing it to Alfonso. I then said calmly and reasonably, "You should have already found out the reason for my gunshot wound."When Bianca took a bullet for you, you gave her love and power. So, what are you planning to give me now that you know that I also took a bullet for you?"Alfonso had a pained and desperate expression on his face. He crouched over next to me and rested his forehead in my lap, begging me to stop talking."I can give you everything. Love, power, and even my life. I'll give you whatever you want. I just don't want you to leave me."Debora, I'll admit that I was moved by Bianca in the past, but I swear that I've never stopped loving you. You're the only one who can be my wife and my Donna…"He soon broke down in tears.I looked at him, but my emotions didn't stir at all. From the moment he began lying to me and chose Bianca over me in the past, I had already expected us to end up like this."I

I pulled my hand away from Alfonso's grip and rested it against my belly instead, saying nothing.I had kept the truth from him back then because I loved him and didn't want him to put himself in danger for my sake. But if I were to explain it to him now, it would only prolong our entanglement more. And, at this point, it was pointless.Since he wasn't able to get the truth from me, he went straight back to the Famiglia estate that night.I didn't know if he just wanted to get to the bottom of the matter or if he had simply thought of Bianca, the other woman who'd also taken a bullet for him. After all, this was the deepest wound that she had inflicted on our relationship. I simply couldn't trust him again. Before he came back, I was soon wheeled into the delivery room. And just as the doctor predicted, the scar tissue ruptured during the labor process.Blood kept spilling from my body, and I felt the chill creeping into me.Amidst the doctors' urgent shouts, I opened my eyes

The next time I met Alfonso again was four months later. That day, I had just finished a medical training session and was walking out of the classroom building with my neatly organized stack of notes in my hand. Then I spotted an extremely familiar black sedan parked in the parking lot.The window rolled down, revealing Alfonso's tense face.He looked far more haggard than when I'd left. His eyes were deeply sunken, and his gaze was fixed on me.I pretended not to see him and kept walking toward the bus stop without breaking my stride. He quickly pushed open the car door and stepped out, reaching out to grab my wrist."Debora, come home with me."I dodged his hand and said in a flat yet firm tone, "We're divorced. I'm not going back with you."His hand froze mid-air. I could see the emotions churning in his eyes before he finally looked at me with a resigned expression. He sighed as if he was dealing with an unreasonable child."I promise never to let Bianca appear before y

Alfonso's expression froze. Then, he let out a cold, mocking laugh."There's no need for tactics like this just to get my attention, Debora. No one would ever help you get a divorce behind my back without my permission."Now stop the nonsense and come back inside. You are carrying my heir. You cannot bear to divorce me for real."His deep, dark eyes fixed on mine. They used to be filled with affection for me, but now, there was nothing but threat.I knew that there was no point trying to talk to him anymore. So, I dragged out my suitcase with me and continued walking out.Alma hurried up to stop me, but Alfonso didn't move a muscle. He stopped Alma and said, "Let her go. Once she's suffered enough out there, she'll come back crawling to me and do exactly as she's told."Someone asked what he'd do if I never returned. He just scoffed and said, "Mark my words, she will come back eventually."He was certain that I was a nobody without the Castagna Famiglia, and that there would b

Alfonso soon hurried up after me.He scrutinized my expression, searching for some emotion on my face."How was the prenatal checkup?" he asked. This was the first time he had ever asked about the baby since finding out about my pregnancy."It was fine."It would probably be even better if I could stay as far away as possible from him and Bianca.Alfonso wore an "I knew it" expression on his face as he said, "Bianca was right all along. You really were just faking your pain and illness just to get my attention. "You looked so in pain yesterday that you nearly had me fooled. I thought something had indeed gone wrong with the baby."You're now pregnant with my heir. You should stop joking around with your health like that. If anything actually went wrong, I swear that you'll never be able to handle the consequences."I had no intention of continuing this conversation with him and just nodded in acknowledgment."I know that Bianca needs your company more. I won't trouble you wi
