Chapter 1

Author: Ewan Wynn
As soon as Gemma Waverly's words fell, my mother-in-law, Margaret Holloway, affectionately teased her for remembering such ancient history.

My husband, Ian Beaumont, also shook his head helplessly, his eyes filled with affection.

Looking at the three of them acting as though nothing was out of the ordinary, my head began to buzz, and an overwhelming sense of absurdity washed over me.

As Gemma casually wove her tale, the hit-and-run vehicle, the road stretch where surveillance cameras happened to be out for maintenance, and the autopsy's conclusion that she had lost her breath almost instantly slowly began to overlap with the details of the case I had obsessively, sleeplessly investigated five years ago after finding my daughter, Soleil Beaumont, dead in a cold, filthy ditch.

I ultimately couldn't withstand the devastating shock of her words and began dry-heaving. The room plunged into an awkward silence.

Margaret's expression darkened, and she curled her lips, grumbling, "Morning sickness at a time like this... Who are you putting on a show for?"

I was so dizzy from vomiting that I had no time to concern myself with her unreasonable jab. I could only cling onto Ian's arm as he reached out to support me.

I stared at him intently. There was instinctive concern for my discomfort and a trace of barely perceptible impatience. There was helplessness and indulgence for Gemma, but there was not a single shred of grief that belonged to a father who had lost his child.

I refused to believe that he didn't hear how wrong Gemma's story sounded. Yet, he was so calm, as if he had heard it a thousand times before, as though he had known the truth all along.

My heart chilled to the core as a horrifying truth began to come to light. "Ian." I clutched his sleeve with all the strength I had left, the depths of my eyes filled with despair. "Is the stretch of road where Gemma was speeding the back street of Starlight Academy?"

The concern on his face instantly froze, and he gaped at me. Gemma's reaction was even stronger. She knocked her chair back with a loud clatter, her expression shifting from disdain to wariness.

Perhaps realizing that her reaction was far too abnormal, she suppressed the doubt and shock in her eyes and forced a smile. "Helena, you must've misheard... I didn't mention which street…"

I braced myself and slowly rose to my feet. My voice drifted out as though it had come from a distant realm, choked with emotion.

"Five years ago, a car accident happened on a street where all the surveillance cameras were under maintenance. The hit-and-run scene where the cops couldn't find the culprit. The purple paint chips from the car found in Soleil's blood during her autopsy. Should I continue?"

Every single word I said carried memories stained with blood. Every tiny detail I mentioned pushed me further onto the ragged edge of a breakdown.

The strained smile on her face completely shattered, and a flicker of panic flashed through her eyes. A moment later, as if she had suddenly remembered something, she shrieked, "No, don't you dare slander me! You don't even remember what happened to Soleil because of your medication, and now you want to frame me..."

Her words hit like a sledgehammer, crushing my heart into a bloody mess. I never expected that a white lie—told out of fear that Ian, a top psychiatrist, would feel defeated if he couldn't cure my psychological trauma, claiming the medication had wiped my memories of Soleil—would come back to bite me in the arse. Little did I know, my kindness would become the very dagger they used to stab me in public.

At that moment, it dawned on Ian that I had never forgotten Soleil's death for even a second. He raised his hand hesitantly and tried to wipe away the tears at the corners of my eyes.

I flinched away. His hand froze in midair, but he desperately tried to maintain his composure and coax me. "Calm down, Helena. These are just hallucinations caused by your medication. Gem was just telling a story..."

I let out a bitter chuckle before bursting into tears and pointing at my own stomach. "How do you think I risked conceiving this child, Ian? I stopped taking my medication a long time ago. I'm perfectly lucid, and I'm not hallucinating."

Step by step, I backed away. My eyes brimmed with tears as bitter bile rose in my throat.

"I'm calling the cops." I turned to leave, but in the very next second, a sharp pain shot through my arm.

Ten days later, Katherine and I were getting ready to travel to the country Caspian was based in to clear my head. While we were waiting for our flight, I received an anonymous message. To my surprise, it was from Ian. His message was drowning in agony and regret. I had zero patience to read through his drivel. I skipped straight to the final line. I couldn't believe that he was still hoping we could reconcile. Ian: "I see now that I was catastrophically wrong, and I don't even deserve to live for what I've done, Elena. I didn't know Gemma murdered our daughter on purpose, nor did I know she injected you with that kind of drug and caused you to be injured… I'm terribly sorry! "For the sake of our second child, please turn around and take a look at me. Give me one last chance to make it up to you!" Every word had been chosen with such care, every phrase weighed and rewritten countless times. Five years ago, I might have softened. But now, I simply sent him the medical report

Left with no other option, Ian turned to our mutual friends for help. Yet, all he received in return were looks of utter disgust. Each one was like a cold spike stabbing straight into his heart. One of our mutual friends spat out, "You fucking disgust me, Ian Beaumont! Your own flesh and blood died, yet you helped the murderer get away with it. No wonder Helena dumped you; at this point, I bet the only thing that could make her a little happy is if you died!" Ian went ghastly pale from their harsh words. Having spent his whole life on a high horse, he had never been subjected to such humiliation. He fled the scene in despair. The man who was always impeccably dressed now looked as though he had lost his soul overnight.Clutching the divorce certificate tightly in his hand, he muttered to himself, "This can't be real. Helena's just throwing a tantrum. Why does she want a divorce? I don't want a divorce. Helena can't live without me. She always cries…"Distracted, he failed to not

Ian, who had remained silent from the moment the trial began, piped up at that moment. He looked at me with an unreadable expression."Helena, I know you're upset, but there's a line to everything, and you've taken this way too far." Without realizing it, his tone was still tinged with reproach. I jeered, "I suggest you get off your high horse, Ian. Don't you just think I can't produce any useful evidence? Don't you just think your family is going to win no matter what?"Ian's expression shifted several times, and I knew I had hit the mark. Having navigated the dark waters of his career for so many years, he was confident in his ability to walk away unscathed. However, having been married to him for all these years, he wasn't the only one who knew me; I knew him just as well.Had I not come fully prepared, I would never have subjected myself to looking at their repulsive faces ever again. The judge soon announced a recess, and the evidence submitted by both parties would have

At 8:00 pm, Ian returned home after a long and exhausting day at work. He pushed open the front door, and the unfamiliar darkness blanketing the apartment caught him off guard. He instinctively turned on the lights and walked around the apartment. That was when it dawned on him that today was already the third day. I still hadn't returned since I had escaped from the mental asylum.Gazing at the pitch-black, lifeless apartment, an inexplicable sense of panic welled up inside Ian. It had been three days. Was I still mad at him?Leaning against the doorframe, he felt lost for once. He pulled up WhatsApp several times, only to close it again. Ultimately, afraid of seeing a barrage of angry accusations from me, he locked his phone. For some reason, a sense of dread closed in around Ian, and he massaged his throbbing temples. He skipped dinner and headed straight into his study. After powering through a stretch of work, he instinctively called out, "Helena, make me a cup of coffee, p

My will to live, which had previously vanished, flared back to life. I peeled my eyes open and met the surprised yet heartbroken look in the eyes of my best friend, Katherine Ellington. She threw her arms around me and burst into tears. Her voice was filled with fear and relief. "Thank goodness… Thank goodness you waited for me. You were this close to leaving me too…"That was when it hit me—after hallucinating Soleil standing at the door, beckoning me over, I'd lost all desire to live. However, the moment I was preparing to jump off the building, I saw Katherine charge in from the side entrance. I gradually came back to my senses. Tears streamed down my face as I hugged her back, sobbing uncontrollably, as though I needed to let out all the grievances I had been bottling up. Once we had both calmed down, she wiped away her tears. "Don't lose hope, Elena. I've brought reinforcements. Don't worry. So long as we don't give up, we'll definitely put those two bastards behind bars!"

When the news reached Ian, the coffee mug in his hand suddenly slipped and crashed to the ground. The scalding liquid splashed everywhere, turning a large patch of his skin bright red, yet he didn't feel a thing. He stood there in a daze for a moment before he snapped back to reality. He ran through more than a dozen red lights and raced to the scene like a man possessed. When he took in the hospital room that had been reduced to a smoldering ruin, a deafening buzz filled Ian's head, and his knees buckled, causing him to stumble. After holding his breath and scanning the small hospital room for a long while, he forced out, "Where's she? I don't care if the ward burned down. I know she's angry with me… but where's Helena?"The doctor hung his head. "When the guard on duty realized something was amiss, he kicked the door open right away and realized the side door downstairs had been tampered with. It's very likely... that Ms. Carlisle escaped from there." After hearing that, Ian
