Chapter 2

Author: Ewan Wynn
The second before I lost consciousness, I saw a spent syringe of sedative in Ian's hand.

He caught my limp body, his eyes filled with guilt and reluctance. "Why didn't you obediently take your medication, Helena? You weren't supposed to remember."

When I came to, I was lying in bed, my entire body aching. I was nauseous and weak because I was forcibly sedated.

Ian stood before the window, clutching a crumpled cigarette pack in his hand. It betrayed his agitation.

I gazed at him quietly, digging my fingernails deep into my palms, before I heard my own hoarse voice. "Why? You know how much I love our daughter, Ian Beaumont! Why did you guys keep me in the dark for five years? Why are you protecting Gemma, the murderer?"

He stiffened. He seized my shoulders, a flash of agony passing through his eyes.

His grip tightened, as if he intended to crush my shoulders. "Helena, now that the truth is out, I'm sorry.

"However, five years ago, Gem was so terrified that she ran a fever for seven whole days and nearly died. She has only just managed to move past it.

"I hope you won't destroy her life over something that's already in the past. In fact, name your price, and I'll make it up to you."

Was that how much he thought Soleil's vibrant, precious life was worth? I stared at him in sheer disbelief and used every ounce of strength in my body to shove him away.

My throat was so raw that it felt as though it might bleed. "What do I want? I want Gemma to pay for her crime with her life!"

The moment those words left my lips, a heavy slap landed across my cheek, leaving it burning hot. Ian froze, a flash of panic darting through his eyes. "I'm sorry, Helena! I-I didn't mean to slap you," he stammered.

His instinctive reaction completely crushed the last sliver of hope in my heart. Tears streamed down my face as I shook like a leaf.

"Soleil is also your daughter, Ian Beaumont! She was only three years old. It was her birthday that day, and because you promised to pick her up and drive her home to celebrate, she waited so obediently at the back gate of her kindergarten.

"If it weren't for you, she wouldn't have been waiting there; if Gemma hadn't deliberately sped, she wouldn't have died!"

Ian shuddered, his face draining of color. Noticing him avoid my gaze, my mind went blank.

I couldn't comprehend how the man—who once loved us more than life itself, who once promised to spoil Soleil like a princess—had turned into this.

He had reduced five years of my suffering to a single word—compensation. He even kept me in the dark, allowing the murderer to parade around right in front of me.

After what felt like an eternity, I closed my eyes, suppressing the tumultuous emotions churning inside me. "Didn't you want me to name my price? The only thing I want is to see Gemma behind bars."

Silence stretched between us until Ian's muffled voice broke it. "Alright, I'll fulfill your wish."

After hearing his promise, my body, which had been fighting the effects of the sedative, could no longer hold out. As my heavy eyelids dragged shut, peace was finally restored to my world.

Ten days later, Katherine and I were getting ready to travel to the country Caspian was based in to clear my head. While we were waiting for our flight, I received an anonymous message. To my surprise, it was from Ian. His message was drowning in agony and regret. I had zero patience to read through his drivel. I skipped straight to the final line. I couldn't believe that he was still hoping we could reconcile. Ian: "I see now that I was catastrophically wrong, and I don't even deserve to live for what I've done, Elena. I didn't know Gemma murdered our daughter on purpose, nor did I know she injected you with that kind of drug and caused you to be injured… I'm terribly sorry! "For the sake of our second child, please turn around and take a look at me. Give me one last chance to make it up to you!" Every word had been chosen with such care, every phrase weighed and rewritten countless times. Five years ago, I might have softened. But now, I simply sent him the medical report

Left with no other option, Ian turned to our mutual friends for help. Yet, all he received in return were looks of utter disgust. Each one was like a cold spike stabbing straight into his heart. One of our mutual friends spat out, "You fucking disgust me, Ian Beaumont! Your own flesh and blood died, yet you helped the murderer get away with it. No wonder Helena dumped you; at this point, I bet the only thing that could make her a little happy is if you died!" Ian went ghastly pale from their harsh words. Having spent his whole life on a high horse, he had never been subjected to such humiliation. He fled the scene in despair. The man who was always impeccably dressed now looked as though he had lost his soul overnight.Clutching the divorce certificate tightly in his hand, he muttered to himself, "This can't be real. Helena's just throwing a tantrum. Why does she want a divorce? I don't want a divorce. Helena can't live without me. She always cries…"Distracted, he failed to not

Ian, who had remained silent from the moment the trial began, piped up at that moment. He looked at me with an unreadable expression."Helena, I know you're upset, but there's a line to everything, and you've taken this way too far." Without realizing it, his tone was still tinged with reproach. I jeered, "I suggest you get off your high horse, Ian. Don't you just think I can't produce any useful evidence? Don't you just think your family is going to win no matter what?"Ian's expression shifted several times, and I knew I had hit the mark. Having navigated the dark waters of his career for so many years, he was confident in his ability to walk away unscathed. However, having been married to him for all these years, he wasn't the only one who knew me; I knew him just as well.Had I not come fully prepared, I would never have subjected myself to looking at their repulsive faces ever again. The judge soon announced a recess, and the evidence submitted by both parties would have

At 8:00 pm, Ian returned home after a long and exhausting day at work. He pushed open the front door, and the unfamiliar darkness blanketing the apartment caught him off guard. He instinctively turned on the lights and walked around the apartment. That was when it dawned on him that today was already the third day. I still hadn't returned since I had escaped from the mental asylum.Gazing at the pitch-black, lifeless apartment, an inexplicable sense of panic welled up inside Ian. It had been three days. Was I still mad at him?Leaning against the doorframe, he felt lost for once. He pulled up WhatsApp several times, only to close it again. Ultimately, afraid of seeing a barrage of angry accusations from me, he locked his phone. For some reason, a sense of dread closed in around Ian, and he massaged his throbbing temples. He skipped dinner and headed straight into his study. After powering through a stretch of work, he instinctively called out, "Helena, make me a cup of coffee, p

My will to live, which had previously vanished, flared back to life. I peeled my eyes open and met the surprised yet heartbroken look in the eyes of my best friend, Katherine Ellington. She threw her arms around me and burst into tears. Her voice was filled with fear and relief. "Thank goodness… Thank goodness you waited for me. You were this close to leaving me too…"That was when it hit me—after hallucinating Soleil standing at the door, beckoning me over, I'd lost all desire to live. However, the moment I was preparing to jump off the building, I saw Katherine charge in from the side entrance. I gradually came back to my senses. Tears streamed down my face as I hugged her back, sobbing uncontrollably, as though I needed to let out all the grievances I had been bottling up. Once we had both calmed down, she wiped away her tears. "Don't lose hope, Elena. I've brought reinforcements. Don't worry. So long as we don't give up, we'll definitely put those two bastards behind bars!"

When the news reached Ian, the coffee mug in his hand suddenly slipped and crashed to the ground. The scalding liquid splashed everywhere, turning a large patch of his skin bright red, yet he didn't feel a thing. He stood there in a daze for a moment before he snapped back to reality. He ran through more than a dozen red lights and raced to the scene like a man possessed. When he took in the hospital room that had been reduced to a smoldering ruin, a deafening buzz filled Ian's head, and his knees buckled, causing him to stumble. After holding his breath and scanning the small hospital room for a long while, he forced out, "Where's she? I don't care if the ward burned down. I know she's angry with me… but where's Helena?"The doctor hung his head. "When the guard on duty realized something was amiss, he kicked the door open right away and realized the side door downstairs had been tampered with. It's very likely... that Ms. Carlisle escaped from there." After hearing that, Ian
