Chapter 3

Author: Ewan Wynn
When I opened my eyes again, the first thing that came into view was a stark, blinding white ceiling.

My chest tightened as a familiar sense of unease washed over me. This was the mental asylum where I had undergone treatment for four years!

Ian sat beside my bed, looking at me with gentle eyes. "I'm sorry, Helena; you need to stay here for a while. I absolutely can't let you hurt Gemma."

In an instant, I realized that he had chosen Gemma over me once again. Despair engulfed me, and I almost snapped. "Ian Beaumont, you're harboring a murderer! How can you look our late daughter in the eyes?"

He pursed his lips, indifferent to my distress. Like a madwoman, I grabbed the fruit knife on the nightstand and lunged at him.

Ian didn't stop me. If anything, he allowed the knife to sink into him. "Does this make you feel better, Helena?"

Dark red blood blossomed across his chest. The nurses rushed into the room and hurriedly bandaged his wound. "Hurry up and restrain her! The patient's completely lost it. If anything happens to Mr. Beaumont, we're all finished!

"Soleil died because you didn't pick her up on time. How could you shift the blame onto someone else? That's incredibly selfish of you!"

The nurses who came in to dress his wound chimed in one after another, the contempt in their eyes piercing me like needles.

"That's enough!" Ian scowled. His cold gaze swept through the nurses. "Helena can do whatever she pleases. None of you have the right to butt in. Get the hell out!"

I, however, shoved him away. "Stop pretending to defend me! Since you're so determined to protect Gemma, I'll call the cops. I'll avenge Soleil with my own hands!"

I pushed myself out of bed and bolted for the door. However, the next second, a sharp pain exploded at the back of my head, and I blacked out.

By the time I came to with a splitting headache, my limbs were tied down, binding me firmly to the hospital bed.

Gemma was sitting beside me, though I had no idea when she had arrived. Noticing me open my eyes, she smiled sweetly and tapped my face with a booklet.

"You're awake, Helena! Goodness, you gave all of us a mini heart attack earlier. Let me read your diagnostic report out loud for you."

After reading out the contents of the booklet, she watched with satisfaction as the color slowly drained from my face.

"Did you hear that? You've been diagnosed with a severe psychiatric disorder. You're now officially a lunatic driven insane by Soleil's death.

"Without clearance, you'll probably have to stay here for the rest of your life. This is all because Ian is too soft-hearted. I merely shed a tear, and he immediately promised to take care of everything for me."

Gemma's boastful words exploded in my mind like a thunderclap.

"Ian?"

He had actually forged a medical record out of thin air and personally imprisoned me in a mental asylum just to protect Gemma?

I almost coughed up a mouthful of blood. "Why? Why on earth did you kill my daughter and ruin everything I have?" I rasped.

"I ruined everything you have?" Gemma guffawed before yanking a fistful of my hair. "You and that little brat are the ones who ruined my life! Ian and I are childhood sweethearts. We promised we wouldn't date anyone else and that we'd become official when we turned 20!

"Yet, why is it that after you showed up, he refuses to marry anyone but you? Why does that little brat look so much like Ian?"

Her grip tightened, and my face flushed crimson in agony as I retched. However, the more pain I was in, the more thrilled she became.

Her shrill voice burrowed into my eardrums from every direction. "So, I loathed you two. I couldn't stand the sight of you two looking so disgustingly happy!

"I deliberately chose that day to confess my feelings to Ian and demand that he divorce you, but he had the nerve to turn me down; he even said he had to hurry home and celebrate that little brat's birthday.

"You, on the other hand, didn't pick her up on time, so you probably didn't know that Soleil had secretly slipped out through the back gate of the school, did you? She even smiled at me, expecting me to take her home."

Gemma cackled. "Unfortunately, my car was out of control. In no time, she ran out of strength and fell into the ditch. Slowly, she stopped breathing, covered in filth and stench.

"It was truly a tragic death. Your daughter was sobbing and begging her mommy to save her right up until she died. Helena, oh, Helena, it's all your fault for stealing Ian from me. You're the one who killed your daughter!"

Ten days later, Katherine and I were getting ready to travel to the country Caspian was based in to clear my head. While we were waiting for our flight, I received an anonymous message. To my surprise, it was from Ian. His message was drowning in agony and regret. I had zero patience to read through his drivel. I skipped straight to the final line. I couldn't believe that he was still hoping we could reconcile. Ian: "I see now that I was catastrophically wrong, and I don't even deserve to live for what I've done, Elena. I didn't know Gemma murdered our daughter on purpose, nor did I know she injected you with that kind of drug and caused you to be injured… I'm terribly sorry! "For the sake of our second child, please turn around and take a look at me. Give me one last chance to make it up to you!" Every word had been chosen with such care, every phrase weighed and rewritten countless times. Five years ago, I might have softened. But now, I simply sent him the medical report

Left with no other option, Ian turned to our mutual friends for help. Yet, all he received in return were looks of utter disgust. Each one was like a cold spike stabbing straight into his heart. One of our mutual friends spat out, "You fucking disgust me, Ian Beaumont! Your own flesh and blood died, yet you helped the murderer get away with it. No wonder Helena dumped you; at this point, I bet the only thing that could make her a little happy is if you died!" Ian went ghastly pale from their harsh words. Having spent his whole life on a high horse, he had never been subjected to such humiliation. He fled the scene in despair. The man who was always impeccably dressed now looked as though he had lost his soul overnight.Clutching the divorce certificate tightly in his hand, he muttered to himself, "This can't be real. Helena's just throwing a tantrum. Why does she want a divorce? I don't want a divorce. Helena can't live without me. She always cries…"Distracted, he failed to not

Ian, who had remained silent from the moment the trial began, piped up at that moment. He looked at me with an unreadable expression."Helena, I know you're upset, but there's a line to everything, and you've taken this way too far." Without realizing it, his tone was still tinged with reproach. I jeered, "I suggest you get off your high horse, Ian. Don't you just think I can't produce any useful evidence? Don't you just think your family is going to win no matter what?"Ian's expression shifted several times, and I knew I had hit the mark. Having navigated the dark waters of his career for so many years, he was confident in his ability to walk away unscathed. However, having been married to him for all these years, he wasn't the only one who knew me; I knew him just as well.Had I not come fully prepared, I would never have subjected myself to looking at their repulsive faces ever again. The judge soon announced a recess, and the evidence submitted by both parties would have

At 8:00 pm, Ian returned home after a long and exhausting day at work. He pushed open the front door, and the unfamiliar darkness blanketing the apartment caught him off guard. He instinctively turned on the lights and walked around the apartment. That was when it dawned on him that today was already the third day. I still hadn't returned since I had escaped from the mental asylum.Gazing at the pitch-black, lifeless apartment, an inexplicable sense of panic welled up inside Ian. It had been three days. Was I still mad at him?Leaning against the doorframe, he felt lost for once. He pulled up WhatsApp several times, only to close it again. Ultimately, afraid of seeing a barrage of angry accusations from me, he locked his phone. For some reason, a sense of dread closed in around Ian, and he massaged his throbbing temples. He skipped dinner and headed straight into his study. After powering through a stretch of work, he instinctively called out, "Helena, make me a cup of coffee, p

My will to live, which had previously vanished, flared back to life. I peeled my eyes open and met the surprised yet heartbroken look in the eyes of my best friend, Katherine Ellington. She threw her arms around me and burst into tears. Her voice was filled with fear and relief. "Thank goodness… Thank goodness you waited for me. You were this close to leaving me too…"That was when it hit me—after hallucinating Soleil standing at the door, beckoning me over, I'd lost all desire to live. However, the moment I was preparing to jump off the building, I saw Katherine charge in from the side entrance. I gradually came back to my senses. Tears streamed down my face as I hugged her back, sobbing uncontrollably, as though I needed to let out all the grievances I had been bottling up. Once we had both calmed down, she wiped away her tears. "Don't lose hope, Elena. I've brought reinforcements. Don't worry. So long as we don't give up, we'll definitely put those two bastards behind bars!"

  • I Healed, but I Never Forgot   Chapter 5

When the news reached Ian, the coffee mug in his hand suddenly slipped and crashed to the ground. The scalding liquid splashed everywhere, turning a large patch of his skin bright red, yet he didn't feel a thing. He stood there in a daze for a moment before he snapped back to reality. He ran through more than a dozen red lights and raced to the scene like a man possessed. When he took in the hospital room that had been reduced to a smoldering ruin, a deafening buzz filled Ian's head, and his knees buckled, causing him to stumble. After holding his breath and scanning the small hospital room for a long while, he forced out, "Where's she? I don't care if the ward burned down. I know she's angry with me… but where's Helena?"The doctor hung his head. "When the guard on duty realized something was amiss, he kicked the door open right away and realized the side door downstairs had been tampered with. It's very likely... that Ms. Carlisle escaped from there." After hearing that, Ian
