Chapter 4

Author: Ewan Wynn
Watching me cough up a mouthful of blood and bawl my eyes out, Gemma smiled and leaned close to my ear.

Like a venomous snake, she slowly whispered, "Oh right, the day your daughter died, Ian didn't come home all night, did he? You don't actually think he went looking for evidence to catch the killer, do you?"

It hit me like a blow to the head. I croaked out in total disbelief, "He told me... He went to check if there was any surveillance footage he'd missed…"

Gemma took in the shattered look on my face and burst into laughter, clapping her hands. "You're so naive. Your husband held me in his arms and comforted me the moment it happened. Because I told him I was terrified, he stayed by my side all night to soothe me, telling me it wasn't my fault."

At that moment, my heart—which I thought had already gone numb from the pain—was violently pierced through once again. Scalding hot tears, born of unbearable agony, trickled down my cheeks.

Ian had clearly seemed more frantic and devastated than anyone else on the day Soleil died, rushing to the funeral home like a madman.

While making arrangements for me after I had passed out, he had pulled every string he could, acting like a man who had lost his soul.

However, it was all a lie. He had only been in such a rush to comfort the person who had caused Soleil's death. Tears of pure despair finally soaked my face.

Pure, unadulterated hatred burst from my chest, almost swallowing me alive. Perhaps catching the flash of madness in my eyes, she smiled at me.

The very next second, a nurse came into view with a sedative.

"Silly me. How could I forget a psychiatric patient's treatment? Don't worry, once you get this shot, you won't remember a thing!"

My pupils contracted as a bad feeling spread through my chest, and I thrashed wildly, screaming for help.

At long last, Ian heard the commotion and pushed the door open. When his gaze landed on my shattered, despairing face, he froze for a moment. "Maybe we should just forget it, Gem. Helena's terrified of needles. Let's just give her some room to breathe."

Jealousy flickered in her eyes, but she wore a considerate smile. "I was too anxious. I only wanted to help Helena get a good night's sleep."

Gemma took the initiative to undo my restraints and reached out to help me up. Yet, in the blink of an eye, a fruit knife slipped out from beside my bed.

A bloodcurdling scream reverberated throughout the hospital room. Gemma clutched her bloodied hand and gasped, "I was only trying to set you free, Helena! Why do you want to kill me?"

Ian pulled her into his arms, his heart aching as he looked at her bleeding arm. Rage stormed in his eyes. "What do you think you're doing?"

Before I could defend myself, he grabbed the sedative and violently plunged the needle into my vein. In an instant, I felt as though I had fallen into an icy abyss. Every drop of blood in my body ran cold.

I suddenly remembered how, whenever I was sick and terrified of needles, Ian would hold me in his arms and comfort me. He would even shed tears out of sheer heartache over the slightest scratch on my skin.

But now, for Gemma's sake, he was the one driving the sharp needle into me.

Drinking in my pained expression, Ian clenched his jaw and followed the nurse out of the hospital room. Gemma was the only one left beside my bed, looking down at me with a sinister grin. "Oh, I forgot to tell you. There's something else mixed into that injection. Stay right here and enjoy the ride!"

As soon as her words fell, my whole body began to tremble, and I collapsed to the floor. A bloody, mutilated vision of Soleil began to materialize before my eyes. She was weeping, consumed by resentment, blaming me for not saving her.

Crushed by guilt, I broke down in tears, my self-loathing reaching its peak. I kept apologizing to Soleil under my breath as I grabbed the fruit knife and cut myself until I was drenched in blood.

I lost track of how long this nightmare went on. I was constantly haunted by hallucinations, and I lost my mind completely. The only thing that arrived like clockwork each day was the sedative needle thrust into my flesh.

Thus, day after day, I sank into silence, hallucinations, and everlasting self-loathing.

Then came a midnight; in my muddled fog, I jolted awake from a nightmare and faintly heard a soft knock breaking the silence of the night.

There stood Soliel's small figure, beckoning me over. I crawled toward her with everything I had, stepping into the darkness, a relieved smile spreading across my face.

Ten minutes later, a raging inferno from a ward within Astrae Mental Asylum set the midnight sky ablaze.

Ten days later, Katherine and I were getting ready to travel to the country Caspian was based in to clear my head. While we were waiting for our flight, I received an anonymous message. To my surprise, it was from Ian. His message was drowning in agony and regret. I had zero patience to read through his drivel. I skipped straight to the final line. I couldn't believe that he was still hoping we could reconcile. Ian: "I see now that I was catastrophically wrong, and I don't even deserve to live for what I've done, Elena. I didn't know Gemma murdered our daughter on purpose, nor did I know she injected you with that kind of drug and caused you to be injured… I'm terribly sorry! "For the sake of our second child, please turn around and take a look at me. Give me one last chance to make it up to you!" Every word had been chosen with such care, every phrase weighed and rewritten countless times. Five years ago, I might have softened. But now, I simply sent him the medical report

Left with no other option, Ian turned to our mutual friends for help. Yet, all he received in return were looks of utter disgust. Each one was like a cold spike stabbing straight into his heart. One of our mutual friends spat out, "You fucking disgust me, Ian Beaumont! Your own flesh and blood died, yet you helped the murderer get away with it. No wonder Helena dumped you; at this point, I bet the only thing that could make her a little happy is if you died!" Ian went ghastly pale from their harsh words. Having spent his whole life on a high horse, he had never been subjected to such humiliation. He fled the scene in despair. The man who was always impeccably dressed now looked as though he had lost his soul overnight.Clutching the divorce certificate tightly in his hand, he muttered to himself, "This can't be real. Helena's just throwing a tantrum. Why does she want a divorce? I don't want a divorce. Helena can't live without me. She always cries…"Distracted, he failed to not

Ian, who had remained silent from the moment the trial began, piped up at that moment. He looked at me with an unreadable expression."Helena, I know you're upset, but there's a line to everything, and you've taken this way too far." Without realizing it, his tone was still tinged with reproach. I jeered, "I suggest you get off your high horse, Ian. Don't you just think I can't produce any useful evidence? Don't you just think your family is going to win no matter what?"Ian's expression shifted several times, and I knew I had hit the mark. Having navigated the dark waters of his career for so many years, he was confident in his ability to walk away unscathed. However, having been married to him for all these years, he wasn't the only one who knew me; I knew him just as well.Had I not come fully prepared, I would never have subjected myself to looking at their repulsive faces ever again. The judge soon announced a recess, and the evidence submitted by both parties would have

At 8:00 pm, Ian returned home after a long and exhausting day at work. He pushed open the front door, and the unfamiliar darkness blanketing the apartment caught him off guard. He instinctively turned on the lights and walked around the apartment. That was when it dawned on him that today was already the third day. I still hadn't returned since I had escaped from the mental asylum.Gazing at the pitch-black, lifeless apartment, an inexplicable sense of panic welled up inside Ian. It had been three days. Was I still mad at him?Leaning against the doorframe, he felt lost for once. He pulled up WhatsApp several times, only to close it again. Ultimately, afraid of seeing a barrage of angry accusations from me, he locked his phone. For some reason, a sense of dread closed in around Ian, and he massaged his throbbing temples. He skipped dinner and headed straight into his study. After powering through a stretch of work, he instinctively called out, "Helena, make me a cup of coffee, p

My will to live, which had previously vanished, flared back to life. I peeled my eyes open and met the surprised yet heartbroken look in the eyes of my best friend, Katherine Ellington. She threw her arms around me and burst into tears. Her voice was filled with fear and relief. "Thank goodness… Thank goodness you waited for me. You were this close to leaving me too…"That was when it hit me—after hallucinating Soleil standing at the door, beckoning me over, I'd lost all desire to live. However, the moment I was preparing to jump off the building, I saw Katherine charge in from the side entrance. I gradually came back to my senses. Tears streamed down my face as I hugged her back, sobbing uncontrollably, as though I needed to let out all the grievances I had been bottling up. Once we had both calmed down, she wiped away her tears. "Don't lose hope, Elena. I've brought reinforcements. Don't worry. So long as we don't give up, we'll definitely put those two bastards behind bars!"

  • I Healed, but I Never Forgot   Chapter 5

When the news reached Ian, the coffee mug in his hand suddenly slipped and crashed to the ground. The scalding liquid splashed everywhere, turning a large patch of his skin bright red, yet he didn't feel a thing. He stood there in a daze for a moment before he snapped back to reality. He ran through more than a dozen red lights and raced to the scene like a man possessed. When he took in the hospital room that had been reduced to a smoldering ruin, a deafening buzz filled Ian's head, and his knees buckled, causing him to stumble. After holding his breath and scanning the small hospital room for a long while, he forced out, "Where's she? I don't care if the ward burned down. I know she's angry with me… but where's Helena?"The doctor hung his head. "When the guard on duty realized something was amiss, he kicked the door open right away and realized the side door downstairs had been tampered with. It's very likely... that Ms. Carlisle escaped from there." After hearing that, Ian
