Chapter 1

I hung up. I looked down and dug through my bag for the key.

My boyfriend, Lukas Asher, had given it to me two years ago. Back then, he'd said, "Here, take it. Come over whenever you want. This place is going to be yours someday anyway."

I'd never once used it without letting him know first.

I slid the key into the lock and turned it. The door opened. The entryway light was on. His sneakers sat beside the shoe rack, next to a pair of women's shoes I'd never seen before.

I didn't go any farther. I just stood there. Rustling came from the living room. Clothes brushing against each other, hushed voices, someone speaking in a panicked whisper.

I took two steps forward. A dress lay discarded beside the couch. Pale purple, with barely enough fabric to cover anything.

There was a single sock on the floor. A woman's. Two wineglasses sat on the coffee table, next to a half-empty bottle of red wine.

Then I saw them. He was getting up from the couch, frantically pulling on his pants. His shirt was buttoned wrong, and his hair was a mess.

The woman was huddled behind him, a faint red mark on her shoulder.

I stopped in the middle of the living room. One thought crossed my mind. Calling him first had been the right decision. Otherwise, what would I have walked in on if I'd just unlocked the door? Would it have been even more disgusting than this?

"Sienna." Lukas' voice was strained. "How did you—"

"I thought you were at a training session?" I cut him off.

He froze for a moment. He'd finally managed to get his pants on, but his shirt was still a mess.

He glanced down at himself, then looked back up. The expression on his face was hard to describe. He looked like a kid caught red-handed, desperately trying to pretend nothing had happened.

"I… I came back early," he said.

"Oh." I nodded. "Came back early from your training session?"

He fell silent. The woman stepped out from behind him, keeping her head down as she frantically picked up her dress and pulled it on.

She looked young, with light brown dyed hair and a faint flush on her cheeks from the wine. Her hands were shaking so badly that it took her several tries to get the zipper up.

I watched her.

She glanced up at me, then quickly looked away.

"And who is she?" I asked.

He opened his mouth. A couple of indistinct sounds came out, but then he fell silent again. He stood there, not knowing what to do with his hands. Finally, he clenched them into fists at his sides.

The silence in the living room was unbearable.

The woman finished putting on her dress and slipped into her white heels. They clicked sharply against the floor.

She glanced at him, then at me, before lowering her head and hurrying into the bedroom, slamming the door behind her.

I stared at the closed door, then turned back to him.

"Well? Say something," I said.

"Sienna, I…" He took a step toward me, then stopped. "I messed up."

"I asked who she is."

"She's just a friend."

"A friend?"

Lukas lowered his head, avoiding my eyes.

I let out a small laugh. I wasn't sure whether I was laughing at him or myself.

Eight years. I'd known him for eight years. We'd been together through high school and college, and into our working lives. I'd thought I knew him well.

But I'd never seen him like this before.

"It won't happen again." He spoke suddenly, lifting his head to look at me with a pleading look in his eyes. "I swear, Sienna. It'll never happen again."

I said nothing.

Suddenly, he turned and started rummaging through the living room. He searched the drawer beneath the coffee table, the TV stand, and under the couch cushions. He was looking everywhere.

I watched him, having no idea what he was doing.

After a while, Lukas pulled out a small red box. He walked over and held it out to me.

"I got you a present," he said quietly. "I was going to give it to you in a couple of days."

I glanced down. It was a jewelry box with a brand logo printed on the lid.

I opened it. Inside was a necklace with a silver chain and a tiny star pendant. It was beautiful.

I held the box in my hand, staring at it for a few seconds. Then I walked over to the trash can and threw the necklace in, box and all.

"Sienna!" he cried.

"I don't want it."

I turned and looked at him.

Lukas stood there, his expression shifting again and again, as though he wanted to say something but couldn't find the words.

The light fell across his face, and for the first time, I felt like I was looking at a complete stranger.

"We've been together for eight years," I said. "And this is how you treat me?"

He lowered his head without a word.

"Eight years," I said it again. "Since our junior year of high school. I followed you to this city. When you worked late, I brought you dinner. When you were sick, I took time off work to look after you.

"When your mother was hospitalized, I stayed by her bedside so you wouldn't have to. I thought we were waiting for the day we'd finally get married.

"Waiting until we'd saved enough money, until the house was finished, until everything settled down. What were you waiting for?"

Ben Asher paused. "But his mother's in the hospital."I said nothing."Things have been a mess at home these past few days. That woman slit her wrists, and her parents came over demanding that Lukas take responsibility."Lukas has locked himself in his room and won't come out. His mother got so worked up that her blood pressure shot up. She was admitted to the hospital yesterday."I listened in silence."Sienna, I'm not calling to ask for the money back. Keep the 100,000 dollars. You're entitled to it. I just wanted to ask if you could delete the recording and stop it from spreading."His mother's been sitting in her hospital bed, reading all those messages on her phone and crying. She keeps saying how humiliating it is, that she's too ashamed to face anyone."I held the phone and looked out the window."I know it's a lot to ask," Ben continued, his voice growing quieter. "But you were together for eight years, and I always treated you well, didn't I? Could you please…""Mr. A

I opened my eyes and looked at the moon. Tomorrow would be a brand new day. I would keep living. I would eat, sleep, go to work, and find a way to move forward.Eight years was a long time, but I still had the rest of my life ahead of me. I would meet other people. There would be new stories, new possibilities, a different future. But Lukas wouldn't be part of it. Not anymore. My phone buzzed again. I didn't check it. Whoever it was, I didn't feel like dealing with them today. It could wait until tomorrow.I didn't leave the apartment the next day. Or the day after that. On the fourth afternoon, I was sitting on the couch, staring into space, when my phone rang.It wasn't an unfamiliar number this time. It was Mom. I stared at the screen for a long time before answering."Sienna." She sounded a little tense. "Your dad wanted me to call and see how you've been doing.""I'm fine," I said."Well…" She paused. "Lukas' mother called me yesterday."I didn't say anything."She told

"Sienna, I know Lukas was wrong. But he's still young and doesn't know any better. Could you forgive him just this once? I'm begging you. That woman slit her wrists, and now her family is causing a scene."Everything's a mess here. Please delete the recording and stop spreading it around. Don't ruin Lukas' life over this."I stared at Mia's message for a long time. Then I typed a reply. "Mrs. Asher, he's 26. He's not a child."I hit send. Then I blocked her too.Gina came out of the kitchen carrying a bowl of soup and set it on the coffee table. "Eat something first. You can deal with all that later."I sat down, picked up the bowl, and took a spoonful. It was warm and slightly sweet."Is it good?" she asked.I nodded. She watched me eat for a while before asking gently, "Sienna, what are you going to do now?""I don't know," I said. "Just keep going, I guess."She looked surprised for a moment, then smiled. "Fair enough. That's what matters most."I finished the soup and se

Gina's eyes widened."I went to his apartment yesterday and caught them together," I said. "So I recorded everything and made him pay me 100,000 dollars to end things."She opened her mouth, but nothing came out."Then I sent the recording to everyone," I continued. "He told me earlier that the other woman slit her wrists. They took her to the hospital. She's still alive."Gina stared at me in shock. "Sienna…" Her voice trembled."Did I go too far?" I asked. She looked at me for a long moment without saying anything. Then she reached over and pulled me into a hug."No," she said. "You didn't go too far. Not at all."I said nothing, resting my head against her shoulder."He's the one who went too far," she said. "He cheated on you. He lied to you. And you had to walk in and see it for yourself. You didn't do anything wrong. You were just protecting yourself."I closed my eyes."Sienna, it's okay to cry," she said. "You don't have to hold it in around me."I shook my head. "I

I didn't say anything, and the woman hung up.I sat on the couch with my phone in my hand, staring out at the night. The rain seemed to have stopped. Droplets still clung to the window, blurring the light from the streetlamps outside.I looked down at my phone. An unfamiliar number sat in my call history. The call had lasted a little over seven minutes.I blocked that number too. Then I set my phone aside, lay down, and closed my eyes. My thoughts were still a mess, but I felt a little better than before. At least it didn't hurt quite as much.I didn't know how long it took, but eventually, I fell asleep. By the time I woke up, it was morning. Sunlight streamed through the window and fell across my face, bright enough to make me squint.I sat up. There was a blanket over me, though I couldn't remember putting it there. I must have pulled it over myself last night.I picked up my phone and checked the time. It was 8:05 am. The recording had already been sent.I opened my messagin

I heard a quiet sob on the other end."He said he doesn't have any money left," she whispered. "He told me to figure it out myself. Said there was nothing he could do."I listened without saying a word."He said you took all of his savings, and he's too embarrassed to ask his family for money. He told me to borrow some from my friends first." Her voice grew even quieter. "But my friends all called me a homewrecker. They said I deserved this and refused to lend me anything."I leaned back against the couch and stared at the ceiling."Sienna?" she tried again. "Please, I'm begging you. Can you give me the money back? I swear I'll never see him again. I promise.""You're pregnant with his baby, and he told you to figure it out yourself?"She didn't answer."Funny. He was awfully protective of you earlier. He kept telling me you were young and didn't know any better. That I should blame him, not you. I actually thought he cared about you."She broke down crying, struggling to get
