Chapter 2

Author: Year on Year
Lukas still said nothing.

"Or were you waiting for her?"

"No." He looked up, his voice suddenly urgent. "It's not what you think. I swear, it was just a stupid mistake. I'd had too much to drink…"

"Too much to drink?"

"Yeah. I had a few drinks, that's all."

The bedroom door opened, and the woman came out, her heels clicking against the floor. She'd changed into a white shirt and jeans, and she'd tied her hair back. She looked much more put together than before.

But she couldn't hide the red mark on her neck. It was a hickey, fresh and dark reddish-purple, just above her collarbone.

She walked over to Lukas and stopped beside him, glancing at me.

The look in her eyes had changed. Earlier, she'd kept her head down, too afraid to look at me. Now she stared straight at me, her lips pressed together in a stubborn line.

"I love him," she said.

I looked at her.

"I love him more than you do." Her voice wasn't loud, but every word was clear. "What we have is real."

"Shut up!" Lukas snapped, whipping his head around to glare at her. "Stop talking nonsense!"

She froze for a moment. Then she reached out and linked her arm through his, tilting her face up toward him. "That's not what you said earlier. You told me you were going to marry me."

He yanked his arm free and stepped away from her. She stood there, her arm still bent as though she were holding on to him, her expression stiffening.

I looked at her, then at him.

Lukas avoided my eyes, staring down at the floor as his fingers kept rubbing along the seam of his pants.

She stood there biting her lip, her eyes turning red.

"Do you even know who he is?" I asked her. "Do you know he's had a girlfriend for eight years?"

"Of course I do." She lifted her chin and looked at me.

I froze for a moment.

"He told me. He said you two had been together for a long time." She paused and glanced at Lukas. He kept his head down, not looking at her. "But he said the feelings between you were long gone."

She spoke a little faster now. "He said you're too controlling. You question him about everything and make him tell you wherever he's going. He feels like he can't breathe around you. He said being with me is different. He can relax, be free, and actually be himself."

I stood there, motionless.

So asking where he'd been was being too controlling. So waiting for him to come home for dinner meant making him report to me. So asking whether he was exhausted from working overtime was suffocating him.

All this time, I'd thought I was taking good care of him. To him, I was just a nuisance.

"He said you're always nagging him," she added, a hint of smugness creeping into her voice. "One minute you're telling him to stop eating so much takeout, the next you're telling him to go to bed earlier. Then you're asking why he hasn't replied to your messages. He said he couldn't take it anymore."

I looked at Lukas. His head was still lowered. He wouldn't look at her or at me.

"Is that true?" I asked him.

His lips moved, but no words came out.

"Lukas," I called his name.

He finally lifted his head and looked at me. Just once, before looking away again.

I understood that look. It was true. Everything she'd said was true.

Suddenly, I felt exhausted. The kind of exhaustion that started at the soles of my feet and spread through my entire body.

I'd only been standing there for a little while, but my legs were starting to feel weak. Still, I couldn't sit down. Not in front of him.

I took a deep breath. "Fine. We're done."

Ben Asher paused. "But his mother's in the hospital."I said nothing."Things have been a mess at home these past few days. That woman slit her wrists, and her parents came over demanding that Lukas take responsibility."Lukas has locked himself in his room and won't come out. His mother got so worked up that her blood pressure shot up. She was admitted to the hospital yesterday."I listened in silence."Sienna, I'm not calling to ask for the money back. Keep the 100,000 dollars. You're entitled to it. I just wanted to ask if you could delete the recording and stop it from spreading."His mother's been sitting in her hospital bed, reading all those messages on her phone and crying. She keeps saying how humiliating it is, that she's too ashamed to face anyone."I held the phone and looked out the window."I know it's a lot to ask," Ben continued, his voice growing quieter. "But you were together for eight years, and I always treated you well, didn't I? Could you please…""Mr. A

I opened my eyes and looked at the moon. Tomorrow would be a brand new day. I would keep living. I would eat, sleep, go to work, and find a way to move forward.Eight years was a long time, but I still had the rest of my life ahead of me. I would meet other people. There would be new stories, new possibilities, a different future. But Lukas wouldn't be part of it. Not anymore. My phone buzzed again. I didn't check it. Whoever it was, I didn't feel like dealing with them today. It could wait until tomorrow.I didn't leave the apartment the next day. Or the day after that. On the fourth afternoon, I was sitting on the couch, staring into space, when my phone rang.It wasn't an unfamiliar number this time. It was Mom. I stared at the screen for a long time before answering."Sienna." She sounded a little tense. "Your dad wanted me to call and see how you've been doing.""I'm fine," I said."Well…" She paused. "Lukas' mother called me yesterday."I didn't say anything."She told

"Sienna, I know Lukas was wrong. But he's still young and doesn't know any better. Could you forgive him just this once? I'm begging you. That woman slit her wrists, and now her family is causing a scene."Everything's a mess here. Please delete the recording and stop spreading it around. Don't ruin Lukas' life over this."I stared at Mia's message for a long time. Then I typed a reply. "Mrs. Asher, he's 26. He's not a child."I hit send. Then I blocked her too.Gina came out of the kitchen carrying a bowl of soup and set it on the coffee table. "Eat something first. You can deal with all that later."I sat down, picked up the bowl, and took a spoonful. It was warm and slightly sweet."Is it good?" she asked.I nodded. She watched me eat for a while before asking gently, "Sienna, what are you going to do now?""I don't know," I said. "Just keep going, I guess."She looked surprised for a moment, then smiled. "Fair enough. That's what matters most."I finished the soup and se

Gina's eyes widened."I went to his apartment yesterday and caught them together," I said. "So I recorded everything and made him pay me 100,000 dollars to end things."She opened her mouth, but nothing came out."Then I sent the recording to everyone," I continued. "He told me earlier that the other woman slit her wrists. They took her to the hospital. She's still alive."Gina stared at me in shock. "Sienna…" Her voice trembled."Did I go too far?" I asked. She looked at me for a long moment without saying anything. Then she reached over and pulled me into a hug."No," she said. "You didn't go too far. Not at all."I said nothing, resting my head against her shoulder."He's the one who went too far," she said. "He cheated on you. He lied to you. And you had to walk in and see it for yourself. You didn't do anything wrong. You were just protecting yourself."I closed my eyes."Sienna, it's okay to cry," she said. "You don't have to hold it in around me."I shook my head. "I

I didn't say anything, and the woman hung up.I sat on the couch with my phone in my hand, staring out at the night. The rain seemed to have stopped. Droplets still clung to the window, blurring the light from the streetlamps outside.I looked down at my phone. An unfamiliar number sat in my call history. The call had lasted a little over seven minutes.I blocked that number too. Then I set my phone aside, lay down, and closed my eyes. My thoughts were still a mess, but I felt a little better than before. At least it didn't hurt quite as much.I didn't know how long it took, but eventually, I fell asleep. By the time I woke up, it was morning. Sunlight streamed through the window and fell across my face, bright enough to make me squint.I sat up. There was a blanket over me, though I couldn't remember putting it there. I must have pulled it over myself last night.I picked up my phone and checked the time. It was 8:05 am. The recording had already been sent.I opened my messagin

I heard a quiet sob on the other end."He said he doesn't have any money left," she whispered. "He told me to figure it out myself. Said there was nothing he could do."I listened without saying a word."He said you took all of his savings, and he's too embarrassed to ask his family for money. He told me to borrow some from my friends first." Her voice grew even quieter. "But my friends all called me a homewrecker. They said I deserved this and refused to lend me anything."I leaned back against the couch and stared at the ceiling."Sienna?" she tried again. "Please, I'm begging you. Can you give me the money back? I swear I'll never see him again. I promise.""You're pregnant with his baby, and he told you to figure it out yourself?"She didn't answer."Funny. He was awfully protective of you earlier. He kept telling me you were young and didn't know any better. That I should blame him, not you. I actually thought he cared about you."She broke down crying, struggling to get
