Chapter 4

Author: Big Belly
There were eight people in the Innovation Center's conference room, consisting of college administrators, the competition's organizing committee, and the legal team.

The projection screen clearly displayed the transmission time, device ID, and login logs.

Professor Ewing tapped against the tabletop. He said, "The leaked files contained not just the competition model, but also confidential data from three investment firms. The recipient's lab happened to serve as the technical advisor for another team in this competition, and they've already downloaded the files.

"If we end up getting sued because of this, a simple letter of apology won't cut it."

Professor Sanford also called me. She asked me simply, "Did you do it?"

"No."

"Then make it clear. The project team can only hold your spot open until tonight."

After I hung up, I went to the restroom to splash cold water on my face. But as I reached the stairwell corner, I heard Nancy crying.

"I really didn't mean to. I just wanted to send my visa documents to my overseas supervisor last night. But both the ZIP files had such similar names that I ended up clicking on the wrong one. But I deleted the email the moment I realized it. I just didn't think that they would have already downloaded it so quickly."

Aaron's voice was low as he replied, "What about the surveillance footage?"

"There aren't any inside the hospital room. The only camera in the hallway would just show me walking in with the laptop."

"Then, there's still a way out."

I pushed the fire emergency door open, and both of them turned to look at me at the same time.

Nancy was crying hard until her shoulders shook.

"Carmen, I'm sorry. I can apologize and pay damages, but I can't let this go on my permanent record. If it does, I'll lose my eligibility for direct admission to grad school, the exchange program, and my startup venture."

I asked, "So?"

Aaron cut in.

"You will take the blame for her for now."

He spoke quickly, as if he had already calculated everything in his head. "You're only handling the visual collaboration for the external team in this competition. You never even touched the core code.

"At most, the faculty will rule it an accidental error and issue a disciplinary warning to you. But it won't be the same for Nancy," he said. "She's the project's core. If academic misconduct is proven against her, her entire career path will be ruined."

I looked at him.

"And what about my path, then?"

"You can always re-apply for that Wingdor project next year."

"This was the last thing my parents secured for me before they passed away. There is no 'next year'." I replied.

Aaron frowned. "Carmen, don't try making this about grand principles right now. I'm just thinking about how to minimize the damage."

Suddenly, I understood what he was getting at.

To him, my life had always been something he could easily sacrifice for the sake of damage control.

At 22 years old, I could be used as a scapegoat for a college project. And later on in life, I could continue sacrificing my love and time for the next 20 years. After all, he would still stay by my side and think that it counted as compensation.

"I won't take the blame," I said.

Aaron's expression darkened.

"Must you drag everyone down with you?"

"I wasn't the one who did anything wrong."

"I'll take care of the disciplinary action if it's taken against you. Just give me three days," Aaron said. "Is it that hard for you to just take the fall for her for just a few days?"

The door opened, and a faculty member appeared, asking us to enter the conference room.

Just before entering the room, Aaron grabbed my wrist and said, "Trust me. I won't let you actually suffer any consequences."

He had said that exact thing to me many times in my past life. But this time, I just pulled my wrist away and entered the room first.

Professor Ewing opened the records.

"The current logs only identify the device used. Aaron Dawson, you're the project lead and the only person who knows where that laptop went at that time.

"So, who had the laptop on the night of the incident?"

Everyone in the conference room turned to look at him.

Nancy sat beside him, her fingers tightly clutching the hem of her shirt.

Aaron looked at me for a very long time. Then, he averted his eyes and said, "It was with Carmen."

Five years later, I became the resident lead for the mural restoration project.I converted the studio Dad left behind into a Digital Cultural Heritage Conservation Laboratory. Many media outlets and reporters arrived on the day of the grand opening.Someone asked me, "Ms. Mosley! Can you please explain why you've persisted in working with digital heritage and digital legacy?"I paused for a moment. Then, I smiled and answered, "Because human memory is fallible, and machines can be wrong. Hence why accurate evidence matters most."At the end of the grand opening session, my assistant, Kelsey Conway, ran over to me with an iPad."Ms. Mosley! There's some old data that requires your authorization for deletion. It's from a personal account synced to the system from five years ago."I opened the file and saw a familiar name—Aaron Dawson.Over the past few years, I had occasionally heard news about him here and there. He never started another business after what happened the last ti

The six-month project finally came to an end, and I returned to the city. But it wasn't because of Aaron. Rather, it was because the hearing for my parents' case was scheduled there. On the day the trial concluded, Martin was sentenced for multiple counts of financial crimes. But as for the car accident involving my parents, the chain of evidence remained insufficient, and he wasn't able to be prosecuted for intentional assault. The outcome wasn't perfect, but it was enough for me.It was drizzling outside when I stepped out of the courthouse. I saw Aaron standing at the foot of the steps without an umbrella, looking much thinner than I remembered. He saw me, but he didn't come over. Instead, he just nodded and said, "You're back.""Yeah.""How's your leg?""It's better.""Good to know."We didn't have anything to say to each other after that.I found it rather strange. After all, we used to talk nineteen to the dozen from morning to night, and now even a comment on the weath

The wind in Wingdor was big and fierce.During my first month with the project team, I still couldn't stand for long, so I spent my days organizing image files on my laptop in my lap.One of my seniors, Dylan Walker, saw me on crutches and came over to annoy me."Looking at your condition, you're going to crumble even before the walls do when you restore the murals later."I smacked him in the head with my file folder. "Get lost."He doubled over with laughter instead and said, "Seems like you're fine if you can curse at me like that. I guess you're not dying yet."Life gradually became busier for me. Nobody asked me about Aaron, and nobody bothered where I'd suddenly popped up from like a wild daisy, but that was just as well.Three months later, the results for the investigation into Mom and Dad's accident finally came out. There was no direct evidence showing that Martin had bribed the driver to stage the "accident", but the charges against him for funneling money through s

I didn't go to Wingdor. At least, not on that day. After Samuel sent me the transfer records, I had the driver take me straight to the police station instead. As it turned out, the money had come from a shell consulting company. Also, the company's ultimate beneficiary was Martin Andrews, an early investor in Aaron's startup project.I knew him. After marrying Aaron in my past life, he always turned up and called me "Mrs. Dawson" in a very close way, sending us thoughtful gift baskets every holiday season. Later, when the company went public, his initial investment yielded returns dozens of times over. The investigating officer said, "We can only confirm the transfer for now. We can't prove that the accident was intentional. Please try not to jump to the worst conclusion, Ms. Mosley."I didn't. However, I did remember something. The day before the accident, Dad called me and told me there were issues with the data in Aaron's project. He asked me to warn Aaron about the issues

The faculty handled the matter swiftly. Nancy was disqualified from the entrepreneurship competition, and the exchange program was suspended. As for whether or not this constituted an intentional leak of confidential information, the email correspondence was still under investigation.Aaron was removed as the project lead for giving false testimony, and the entire team had to bring in a replacement on very short notice. The day the news broke, I was at the hospital, processing my discharge. Professor Sanford had arranged transport to bring me from the hospital, and one of the staff helped me bring my suitcase downstairs.Just as I stepped into the lobby, I saw Aaron sitting on the waiting bench in the hallway, looking as though he hadn't slept all night. He already had stubble showing on his face. He immediately got up the moment he saw me."I'll give you a ride.""No, thank you.""It's hard for you to get around with your leg like that.""I have transport.""Carmen," he s

"It was with Carmen," Aaron said. The entire conference room fell silent for a few seconds.I didn't speak and just looked at him.Professor Ewing double-checked with him and said, "You mean to say that the laptop was being used by Carmen Mosley all night from 1:17 am onward?"Aaron gulped and answered, "Yes."Nancy didn't even lift her head next to him. However, her tight grip on the hem of her shirt relaxed.I suddenly chuckled."Fine."Aaron frowned. "Carmen, this is not the time to act out of spite.""I know," I said, placing my phone on the table. "That's why I also prepared something."Then, I began playing the recording. Nancy's voice came through the speaker."I just wanted to send my visa documents to my overseas supervisor last night. But both the ZIP files had such similar names that I ended up clicking on the wrong one. But I deleted the email the moment I realized it."The conference room erupted in an instant.Nancy jerked her head up."You recorded us?"I
