Chapter 1

"Stop talking nonsense, Kayla Phillips," Oliver Barton said, looking at me impatiently.

"Your grades have always been horrible. You won't even be able to get into a vocational college even if you insisted on going to one in Haven City.

"Did you seriously think that it would be easy for anyone to get into a good college in Haven City? Viv and I have been working extremely hard for years before we could get good enough results to go to a slightly better college there."

I looked at Oliver quietly. Then, I asked, "So, everything you said about retaking the year with me in the past was all just a lie, wasn't it?"

He was dumbstruck for a moment. He just rubbed his nose awkwardly and averted his gaze from my eyes.

A long while later, he finally changed the subject. "I know that I let you down, Kay. But yes, I lied to you, and so did Viv. We lied about slacking off when we were really working our asses off the entire time. We'd even already planned out our life together in the future.

"But it was all for your sake!"

I stared at him incredulously.

He continued speaking in a feigned magnanimous tone, "We wanted to bring you along to the private tutoring sessions, but we just didn't have the time to take care of you. That's why we thought of teaching you everything only after we both got into college.

"At least, you'd probably be able to get into a good community college then."

I felt like I just heard the worst joke of the century.

"You don't even have the patience to explain a single thing in class to me now, Oliver Barton. All you do is throw your notes in my face and tell me to figure it out on my own. So, why should I even believe you?"

"That's because… That's because I was too busy preparing for the mocks! Of course I wouldn't have any patience or energy left for you! Did I not explain things to you when I still had energy? We're all friends here!"

His explanation was useless.

I'd tried to keep up my act and make it seem real by asking him and my best friend, Vivian Andrade, about something once. It was only that one time, and he'd just glared at me and chided, "Don't disturb Viv when she's studying!"

I even had to make sure that I picked a question that I knew he knew when I asked him to explain it to me. If I picked something he didn't know, he would yell at me in return and scold me for being stupid.

"What's the point of explaining something like this to you anyway? You don't have to care about something as difficult as this! Just leave it blank and skip to the next one!"

Yet, the question had been a very basic one that anyone should have already known.

As for Vivian, Oliver's attitude toward her was completely different. He would spend the entire afternoon poring over a question that she didn't understand and later asked him about. If not, he would rush home to ask his tutor to explain things to him so he could explain it back to her the next day.

Even if Vivian chided him for doing that, he'd just shrug it off without thinking much about it.

But when it came to me, Oliver pretended as though I didn't deserve to take up even 30 seconds of their time. In fact, he thought he owned my time too, always ordering me around to save seats for them at the library, buy them breakfast in the morning, do him printing favors, or organize their notes on their behalf.

Every time, he would tell me that I should just do them because "we were all friends".

When Oliver saw that I seemed out of it, he deliberately raised his voice and pretended to be magnanimous again, saying, "You've never been good at studying. I was just worried you would get extremely jealous about my excellent results and jeopardize our friendship.

"After all, you'll never be able to catch up to me even if you tried your best for the rest of your life."

I laughed coldly.

Me? Jealous of him?

When their grades improved drastically in our freshman year of high school, I'd been so genuinely happy for them that I even offered to treat them to lunch on my dime. I was even happier for them than when my grades improved instead.

However, when I put in some effort in the next exam during that same year and improved my grades so well that I became the top scorer of my grade, both Oliver and Vivian ignored me for the rest of the day after finding out about it.

They deliberately dismissed me, avoided me, and even refused to sit at the same table with me during lunch.

When I bumped into them at the library later that evening, Oliver finally spoke to me and asked to borrow my paper. I thought he wanted to see how I worked out my answers, so I lent it to him, waiting eagerly to explain anything he asked me.

But I soon realized that he was only double-checking to see if the teacher had made any mistakes in grading my paper.

He yelled at me and demanded that I explain myself for getting better grades than him or Vivian. I got so shocked I could only fib and stammer that I just happened to guess all the right answers.

It wasn't until I said that that they were finally relieved.

Ever since then, I'd made sure to keep my real abilities under wraps and make sure that I never got better grades than either of them, thinking foolishly that it would help preserve our friendship.

I asked Oliver in return, "Me, jealous of you? What about the time when you went to great lengths to find problems with the grading of my test back then and even reported it to the teachers, saying I had a ton of errors? Are you sure that's jealousy on my part?"

Oliver stammered, "I… That's just because I was too serious back then!"

After completing our undergraduate studies at Dale University, Ingrid and I were both accepted into their graduate program, and we ended up researching projects together. We were literally showered with scholarships and project grants and even received numerous job offers from prestigious companies and large corporations. The signing bonuses alone were equivalent to a year's salary for many working professionals.Just before starting work, I went back to my old high school and met up with Ms. Walters, who took me for a walk around the school.I saw that my name was on the school's Hall of Fame, situated at the very top in the most prominent position.Suddenly, I felt a sense of relief and happiness surging within me."Do you still remember Oliver Barton and Vivian Andrade?" Ms. Walters suddenly asked me. "A few of your old classmates visited me some time ago and told me about them. Apparently, they broke up in college."Vivian never graduated because of her troubled private life

I stared intently for a long time, and it wasn't until I finally managed to recover from my distant memory that I recognized him as Oliver. It wasn't my fault that so many other things had already happened since that college entrance exam incident.Oliver looked rather disheveled and was dressed very plainly in old clothing. His eyes were red and puffy."What is it?" I asked him.He looked at Ingrid next to me. Ingrid thought of leaving, but she was worried about leaving me alone. So, she asked, "Is he your ex-boyfriend?"I shook my head. "No. He's just an ex-classmate from high school."Then, I looked at Oliver and said, "What is it? This is my best friend here. Just say what you want to say now.""I broke up with Vivian."I didn't feel a thing when Oliver said that. In fact, I wasn't even interested in listening to him anymore. However, I forced myself to stay, thinking that at least we were still friends for a long time in the past."I got slightly lower marks than her in

Oliver and Vivian waited for me at the door after the reunion was over.I couldn't avoid them, but I had no intention of doing that either. Some things were just better said in person."Kay, since you're going to be in Haven City now, we can still hang out together too!" Oliver said."Forget about it," I said, waving my hand at him. "I'll make new friends and have a new campus life away from you. I don't need you two as my friends."Oliver began yelling at me as though he were drunk. "You're still mad at me, aren't you? You're mad that I lied to you about studying! But you also lied to me about your grades, didn't you?"You lied to me and Vivian! You already had a direct admission spot at Dale University, but you kept pretending that you had terrible grades just to lie to us! Was it fun playing us for a fool, Kayla Phillips?"Fine. I don't blame you for it, but we're equal now! Can't be just—"I was running out of patience with him."I never lied to you. I asked you if you stil

To Vivian's astonishment, Ms. Walters then turned to look at me."Kayla scored the full 800 marks for her language segment! She got the highest score in the whole of Riverbay City!"Oliver immediately jumped to his feet and corrected her, "You must be mistaken, Ms. Walters! Kayla skipped the second part of the college entrance exam! I bet she only scored 800 after totaling her language and math segments!"One of our classmates even laughed and said, "Ms. Walters! That 800 marks is her total score, not just her language score!""Really, Ms. Walters? If that's the case, then I'd have scored over 2000 marks in my college entrance exam!"More laughter ensued.Ms. Walters frowned and clinked on her glass, demanding everyone's attention."Kayla only sat for the language segment. So, her 800 marks is the full score out of the 800 marks for language."Everyone fell silent at once."No way… That's impossible…""Since when has she been that good in her studies?"Everyone looked at Ms.

Everyone knew who I was talking about, but my words were quickly drowned out by Oliver's mass of supporters."Kayla! You shouldn't say that just because you're jealous that Oliver and Vivian were meant for each other!""Yeah! You've been best friends with him for a long time. So what if you can't be with him? You guys can still be regular friends!""But don't you try stealing him away from Viv! She's still your best friend after all!"I just left the group chat and deleted it after that. I also made sure to block Oliver's number and all of his socials.…A month later, the college entrance exam results were released, and Ms. Walters organized a class reunion for us. She also repeatedly urged me to attend the reunion. After all, she knew she wasn't going to be able to see me very often anymore, and she wanted to see me as much as possible while she still had the chance. She'd been our homeroom teacher for four years, and she liked me the most. She also knew my strengths and poten

I ignored Oliver. I didn't want to ruin my good mood today just by talking to him.I walked into the examination hall. The bell rang, and the exams officially began.Right after I was done with the questions, I filled out the scantron sheet with the correct answers. I no longer had to deliberately fill out the wrong answers just to feed Oliver's or Vivian's egos and make them think they were better than me.The morning passed very quickly. As soon as I was done with the first module of reading and writing, I decided to hand in my papers and go shopping on my own.I'd already experienced what it was like to take the college entrance exam, and I was done with it. There was no point for me to continue staying here anyway. After leaving the examination hall, I grabbed my bag and prepared to leave the school. However, Oliver suddenly blocked me from leaving at the gate."Kay? Where are you going?"I frowned when I saw that he refused to let me out."I'm going to the mall. If you kee
