Chapter 6

Author: Chase Jones
Liam made me take a full body check-up. He then asked the doctor quietly, “How is she?”

The doctor sighed and looked at me.

“I’m sorry, but her cancer cells are spreading really quickly, and she didn’t get treated during the early stages either, so the situation isn’t looking good for her.

“If we give her conservative treatment, she’ll have at most a year.”

I had another year?

I thought I had less than two months.

I smiled. It was genuine this time.

“It’s fine. One year is really good for me.”

When we left the hospital, Liam stayed silent and did not say anything, but he held my hand really tightly.

I knew that he was angry at me for giving up on staying in the hospital for treatment.

But I did not want to stay in the hospital and be forced to breathe in the smell of disinfectant before I died. That was why I rejected the doctor’s suggestion.

I held his hand and flashed him a smile. “Won’t you talk to me, Liam?”

Liam turned around under the streetlamp, and I saw that his eyes were a little red.

He scoffed, “Don’t go thinking that you won’t have to go through treatment just because you’re not hospitalized. I’m going to make sure that you go to the hospital every day from now on.”

I pouted. “I don’t want to go…”

Liam flicked my forehead.

“When you’re sick, you take medicine. That’s the natural order of things. Also, I saved your life, so you have to listen to me, understand?”

But at the moment I thought about how I would end up like the other cancer patients if I started receiving treatment, I was quite scared. I did not want to lose all my hair, become as thin as bones, and be bedridden.

While we were walking down the street, I asked, “Liam, do you undertakers really make sure we look as nice as possible when we die? I don’t want to lose my hair and die looking ugly.”

Liam did not answer me, but he took my medicine bag from me and held my hand as he walked ahead of me.

A long time passed. Just when I thought he would not say anything, I heard him whisper, “You won’t look ugly.”

I did not hear him clearly, so I asked, “What did you say?”

Liam sighed.

When he spoke again, his voice was like a spring breeze that blew straight into my heart.

“Even if I don’t put any makeup on you, you still look lovely.”

…The night breeze must have been tickling my heart.

When I finally registered what he was saying, I found that my face was burning.

I ducked my head instinctively.

“Liam… you’re really good at comforting me.”

That night, Liam brought me back to his house.

When we got to his house, I was already really tired, so I curled up on his sofa.

After some time, my phone rang.

I answered it instinctively.

It was a call from Jake. “Where the hell are you?”

I was not expecting Jake to give me a video call.

He had a good relationship with Lydia, which was also why he always hated me.

“Don’t you know that Lydia rushed back after hearing about you? Are you playing hide-and-seek with us now?”

So, they still remembered me?

But that was meaningless.

If I went back, I was just going to be an emotional punching bag again and had to do things according to their moods.

I would even be bullied.

I had nothing to look forward to in that house.

I put a hand over my hurting stomach and said, “I’m not going back.”

In any case, I was going to die.

Why should I go back, then?

My mother was sitting by the dining table and grabbed Jake’s phone.

The moment she opened her mouth, she started yelling at me, “If you’re done causing trouble, come back! No one’s going to bend over backward every day for you! Can’t you be like Lydia?!

“Seriously, why did I give birth to you?! If I had known you would be like this, I wouldn’t have given birth to you at all!”

Honestly, I was prepared to hear something like this a long time ago, but when I really, truly heard it, I still found that it hurt.

My hands trembled, and I gave myself a mocking smile. “If you say so. And don’t worry, I’ll die far away and won’t dirty your house.”

My mother was so angry that her expression changed, and she swept all of the glasses on the table down on the floor.

“Get back here! Or else, I’ll disown you!”

I was used to my mother’s overbearing attitude. So, when I heard this, I suddenly found that I did not feel as sad as I usually would.

All the things that always bothered me finally disappeared.

I smiled.

“Alright. In any case, I don’t want to be a family with you anymore either.”

I covered Liam’s mouth and grumbled, “I finally broke free of them, so why are you still talking about them to me? Whether they live or die is none of my business anymore.”I leaned against him and shut my eyes as I felt the mountain breeze.I smiled brilliantly. “I just want… to live for myself from now on. I was pretty much a failure my whole life. I had no friends, and I was never the one picked for any teams or events. In the past, I thought that my life was ruined.“But now that I think about it, we all have our purpose in life. At the very least, God let me meet you.“At the moment I think about how there will still be someone who will remember me after I die, I’m no longer afraid.”At night, Liam and I went down the mountain. When I was tired, he carried me down. While I leaned against his back, I asked, “Liam, when you said that you didn’t have any family left, what did you mean?”I felt Liam freeze for a moment. I could not see his expression, but I could hear him s

Every morning over the next half a month, Liam brought me to chemotherapy.During one afternoon, he said that he would help me choose a gravesite. When I saw that the gravesite I chose cost much, I looked down at the one-hundred-dollar bill in hand and felt dejected.Liam seemed to have understood what I felt, and he just patted my head dotingly.“Do you like it?”I nodded. “Can I have it?”After some thinking, Liam said jokingly, “Call me Lee, and I’ll buy it for you.”I blinked. Then, with a well-behaved look in my eyes, I stood on my tiptoes and drew near to his ear while also grabbing the hem of his shirt. I whispered softly, “Could you buy it for me, Lee?”Liam could not take it. He turned his head to the side. But his face burned so red that it reached his ears.He cleared his throat and did not dare look me in the eyes. He still handed me his card, though.“U-Use it!”I cradled my stomach and laughed. To think that Liam would have such an adorable side. When Liam

I was sent to the hospital. When I woke up again, I had tubes sticking out of all parts of my body. The vile smell of medicine assaulted my nose.My whole family was by my bed.My mother was tearing up.“Maria, are you feeling better?”I watched these people and summoned the last bit of strength to push them away.“Go… away!”Cancer did bring me pain, but it was not even 1/1000 of the pain my family brought me.I did not want to see them again.Every single one of them made me feel disgusted.Aaron knelt down beside my bed. Despite being a man, he was wailing. He held my hand and begged for my forgiveness. “Maria, I’m sorry. I overlooked your feelings and made you go through so much. I’m really sorry. I just want you to get better.“I’ll buy you whatever you want, okay?”Despite an oxygen mask over my bloodless face, my expression was one of indifference.People were like trees. When a tree was empty inside, it could still stand tall, and everyone would still think that

As I watched her clearly fake kindness, I felt disgusted, so I flung her hand off of me.“I don’t need you pretending to be nice to me.”Lydia staggered and nearly fell, but Aaron caught her.Worried, he said, “You’re always so considerate of other people. Why are you so foolish?”Jake went to Lydia’s side and stared at me in disgust.“Did you see that, Lydia? She’s an ungrateful one! You’ve been worried about her for an entire night and asked us to come find her in the morning, but she’s trying to curse you so you’d die!”Feeling resigned, I had to defend myself. “This urn isn’t for her.”But Aaron just scoffed, as if he could already predict what I wanted to say next.“Are you going to say that the urn is actually for you? Only Lydia would believe you. You bought an urn to make us pity you, right? Did you actually think we’d still believe in you?”My face turned pale, and I gripped my urn so tightly that my knuckles turned white.“It doesn’t matter whether you believe me or

Liam came out of the kitchen and heard what I said. He frowned and grabbed my phone to look at my mother and Jake.He sneered and said, “You’ve always wanted her to be mature and obedient, but have you forgotten just who the culprits, who caused all this, are? You’re not worthy of asking her to go back now.”Before they could say anything, Liam had already ended the call for me.“Trash! All of them!” Liam helped me up and put a jacket on me before wrapping a scarf around my neck.“Let’s go.”I was puzzled. “Where to?”Liam put his hands on my head and smiled. “We’re celebrating your birthday.”The wind on the roof was really strong that night, but my palms were warm.As brilliant fireworks exploded in the sky, Liam put on a birthday hat for me and said in embarrassment, “I couldn’t buy one in time, so I just grabbed random stuff at home to make you one.“Here’s to your 22nd birthday, Maria.”I stared dazedly at the fireworks exploding in the sky for me, and I could not hold
