Chapter 3

Author: Foxfall1
The next morning, I woke up at six.

I ironed my white blouse three times, pinned my hair up and took it down again, then finally settled on the style Shane had once said looked good on me.

A little after seven, he called, his voice low.

"I'm on my way. I got you breakfast and black coffee, with no sugar."

I tightened my grip on the phone. "Okay."

Twenty minutes later, his car pulled up at the curb. I was just about to walk over when the back window rolled down, revealing Sophie inside with a cooling patch still on her forehead.

She smiled at me. "Wendy, I'm just going to the hospital for a follow-up on the way. I won't hold you two up."

Shane got out and handed me the breakfast.

"Eat a little first. Don't take the photos on an empty stomach."

I looked down at the bag. The breakfast sandwich was from my favorite place, and the coffee really was unsweetened.

Then Sophie made a small sound from inside the car.

"Shane, I feel like I can't catch my breath."

His expression changed instantly. He opened the door and touched her forehead.

"Why are you so hot?"

Sophie caught his wrist. "Don't worry about me. Go inside with Wendy first. Today is important."

But the more she said that, the less likely Shane was to leave.

He looked at me. "Go in and take a number first. I'll get her to the hospital, have them start an IV, and come right back."

I stared at him. "Shane, today is our marriage registration appointment."

"I know."

"If they call our number and we miss it, we'll have to make another appointment."

"I'll make it back in time."

He sounded certain, just as he did every time he promised me something.

So I went into the building alone.

They called my number three times, and Shane still hadn't arrived. Once I'd missed my turn, the clerk handed my paperwork back to me.

"You'll have to reschedule."

I stood there holding the documents when my phone suddenly lit up.

Sophie had sent me a photo. Shane was standing at the hospital counter with his head lowered as he paid her bill, while his phone rested on her lap.

She'd added a message.

[Wendy, I'm sorry. Today was supposed to be such a happy day for you two.]

Shane finally arrived at twelve forty. There was sweat on his forehead, but he was still carrying a bouquet.

"Traffic was bad."

I didn't take the flowers. I simply handed him the crumpled number slip.

"We missed it."

He was quiet for a few seconds before putting the bouquet into my arms.

"We'll make another appointment next week."

I laughed.

"You make it sound so easy."

"Wendy, it's only a week."

"To you, it's only a week." I looked up at him. "But I've waited four years for this day."

His expression turned cold.

"Wendy Mercer, don't use getting married to force me to choose sides. She was sick. I wasn't going to leave her alone at the hospital."

I put the flowers back in his hands.

"Then why could you leave me here alone?"

He had no answer.

A few seconds later, he reached for me. "Okay, okay. I'll have lunch with you, and this afternoon we'll go to the bridal shop and look at dresses. Didn't you say last night that you liked the satin one?"

I stepped away from his hand just as my phone lit up again.

Sophie had made another post.

In the photo, Shane was bent over tying her shoelace, the hospital corridor lights falling across his shoulders.

The caption read:

[Some people aren't your boyfriend, but they make you feel safer than a boyfriend ever could.]

Our mutual friends were teasing her in the comments.

[So who's the real Mrs. Carter?]

Sophie didn't reply.

Shane saw the post too, but his first reaction wasn't to explain. Instead, he reached over and turned off my screen.

"She's sick. Don't go giving her a hard time."

I looked up at him. Something seemed to close around my chest so tightly that even breathing hurt.

"Shane, I haven't said a word."

"But I know what you're going to say."

He sounded tired.

"Wendy, don't make me feel like marrying you is going to be exhausting."

I stood there stunned.

For four years, I had given way one step at a time. How had all that giving way somehow turned me into nothing but a burden in his eyes?

Shane immediately seemed to realize how harsh his words had been. His lips moved.

"That's not what I meant."

I looked down at the number slip, crushed beyond recognition in my hand, and suddenly didn't want to explain anything at all.

"It doesn't matter anymore."

I placed the slip in his hand and walked away.

He didn't come after me, and I didn't look back.

  • I Learned How to Enjoy Being Alone   Chapter 10

By the second spring after I left, I went back to Disneyland with a colleague, Claire Bennett. On the way in, she asked, "Have you been here before?""Once."She grabbed my arm and pulled me toward the carousel."Then you've definitely been on this, right?"I hesitated, then shook my head."No."The line was long that day, and we waited more than forty minutes. When our turn finally came, I chose a white horse. The music started, and the carousel began to rise and fall. A little kid nearby was laughing at the top of his lungs, and suddenly I remembered standing beside Shane two years ago, telling him I wanted to ride it.He'd frowned."Haven't you always said you're not a kid anymore? Why do you suddenly need someone to humor you now?"Back then, I'd actually believed liking things like this was childish. It took me a long time to understand that there was nothing childish about wanting to ride a carousel, and there was nothing embarrassing about wanting the person you loved to ride i

Six months later, I went back to the city I'd left behind for a friend's wedding. When the invitation arrived in Southvale, I stared at it for a long time before deciding to go.After the reception, I stepped out of the hotel and saw Shane standing by the entrance. My steps faltered.I hadn't seen him in six months, and he'd lost a lot of weight. He used to wear black almost exclusively, but now he was dressed in an ordinary gray coat.He didn't come toward me. He only stood where he was and asked, "Can we talk for a minute?"I didn't say no.We went to the convenience store on the corner. Back when we used to argue, he would always stop there afterward and buy me something warm to drink to coax me out of being upset. This time, he bought nothing.Once we sat down, he pushed an old paper bag across the table.Inside was the white blouse I'd left behind. The one I'd worn for our marriage license appointment. The one I'd ironed three times that morning. My fingers paused against the fabr

Sophie came to Southvale once after that, though she never came to see me. Shane was the one who told me about it.He was waiting outside my building that evening, and for once, he didn't come any closer."I'm going back tomorrow."I nodded. "Okay."He stood there for a long time before speaking again."Sophie came to see me today."I was about to leave when he suddenly asked, "Wendy, did I always think you could handle more than she could?"My steps stopped.Shane lowered his head and smiled, but there was nothing pleasant about it."Whenever she cried, I thought something terrible had happened. When you didn't cry, I assumed you were fine. If she said she was scared, I went to her immediately, but when you told me you were hurting, I told you to be more understanding."He looked at me."I actually used to think it was because you were more mature than she was. I know now that it wasn't."His voice dropped."I was taking advantage of you."My nose suddenly stung, and I turned my face

Shane didn't leave Southvale right away. Instead, he found a place near my office and stayed. On the first day, he sent over coffee with no sugar. I had the front desk send it back. The second day, he sent the stomach medicine I always took, and I left that downstairs too.On the third day, a mango mille crepe arrived.I stared at it for several seconds before sending him my first message since the breakup.[I'm allergic to mangoes.]His call came less than a minute later.I didn't answer.A message followed.[Didn't you use to eat this all the time?]I stared at those words for a long time without replying.Sophie used to love mango mille crepe. Whenever Shane bought one for her, he would buy two and bring the other one to me.I never wanted to ruin his mood, so I'd always eat a couple of bites. Later, when my stomach started bothering me, I'd quietly throw the rest away.So he remembered seeing me eat it.He had just never noticed that I didn't like it at all. That night, he waited

The Southvale branch arranged a temporary apartment for me. It was small, consisting of just one bedroom and a living room, with a view of the elevated freeway outside the window.I didn't sleep well that first night. When I woke at two in the morning, I reached toward the other side of the bed without thinking, only to find it empty. I froze for a moment before slowly drawing my hand back.Four years of habit wasn't something I could erase in a single night. The next morning, I stopped at a café on my way to work and ordered automatically. "Two coffees, no sugar in one."The owner had already started on the second cup when I caught myself."Sorry. Just one cup."That was when I realized that leaving someone didn't happen in a single moment when you turned and walked away. It happened in all the countless moments afterward, when you had to learn all over again how to live by yourself. On my fourth day in Southvale, Shane came to find me.I had just left the office after work when I s

Once the plane was in the air, I switched my phone back to normal mode.Shane still hadn't tried to reach me.Our chat was still sitting on the message he'd sent the night before.[Did you take your medicine?]Back then, I'd thought he simply didn't know how to prioritize.Later, I finally understood. If someone always puts you second, it isn't because he doesn't know how to choose. You just don't matter that much to him.I deleted our conversation and turned off my phone.Three months earlier, my company had asked whether I wanted to transfer to Southvale. I'd turned it down at the time because Shane had said that once we got our marriage paperwork done, we'd start planning the wedding. He'd told me not to work so hard anymore. He could afford to support me.And I'd actually believed him. After the plane landed, I pulled up that old email and sent a new reply.[I'd like to accept the transfer.]Then I dragged my suitcase out of the airport.A light rain was falling over Southvale. It
