Liam's POV

I answer on the third ring.

"Talia."

"Finally." Her voice is light. Warm. The voice she uses when she has already decided the mood of the conversation before it begins. "You've been impossible to reach."

"I've been busy."

"With what?"

There it is.

The old me would have answered without hearing the angle of the question. The old me would have said meetings or the merger or nothing important and given her exactly enough information to build the rest of it herself.

The current me hears

  • I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets   CHAPTER FIFTY FOUR: Three In One Building

Emma's POVThe footage arrives just after twelve.Bertrand brings it in on a tablet and sets it on my desk without ceremony, and Liam and I both lean in at the same time, close enough that our shoulders almost touch before I shift half an inch to the left and put the necessary distance back between us.The screen shows the service door of my building. The timestamp places the woman there at nine twenty-two. She is wearing a dark coat and a scarf pulled high, and she stands at the door for forty seconds trying the handle, looking up at the camera once, and then turning away when the concierge appears at the end of the corridor.Liam leans closer."Pause it."Bertrand pauses it."Go back three seconds... There... Her hand..."I look at the hand on the door handle... a ring, gold and thin, on the fourth finger of the left hand."That is not a wedding ring," I say."No," Liam replies. "But it is a ring I bought her two years ago. In Milan. After the divorce. She wears it every day."The of

  • I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets   CHAPTER FIFTY THREE: The Work

Emma's POV We work for two hours. Not the way I expected to work with Liam Carson in a room with me, which is to say not silently and not politely and not with the careful professional distance I maintained the last time he sat across from me in this building. We work the way two people work when there is a fire and neither of them has time to decide how they feel about the person holding the other end of the hose.I spread the printed file across my desk. Every page. Every photograph. Every date. Every hotel record Marcus compiled. Liam sits across from me and he walks me through each one, not because I cannot read them myself but because he has already read them and he knows which details matter and which ones are noise, and for the first time in three years I let him be useful to me without resenting the fact that he is being useful. It is harder than I expected. Not the work...The proximity. He is close enough that I can smell his coat, wool and cold air and something underneath

  • I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets   CHAPTER FIFTY TWO: The Breath On The Line

Emma's POV He arrives in twenty-three minutes.I know this because Noémie calls my direct line from the lobby desk downstairs and says, in the careful measured voice she uses when she is managing a situation she has opinions about, "Ms. Bellamy, there is a Mr. Carson in the lobby. He says you are expecting him.""Send him up.""Ms. Bellamy?""Send him up, Noémie."A pause that carries the full weight of everything Noémie has not said to me in the one year she has worked for me about the man whose name she has been declining on my calendar for as long as that timeframe."Sending him up."I stand behind my desk.I do not sit.I do not adjust my hair. I do not look at my reflection in the dark screen of my laptop. I do not do any of the things a woman does when a man she used to be married to is about to walk into her office for the second time in her life, because the first time he walked into this office I told him to call me Ms. Bellamy and the second time he is walking into it I am t

  • I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets   CHAPTER FIFTY ONE: The File

Emma's POV The file arrives at nine forty-one, and I know before I open it that whatever is inside is going to divide my life into the part before I read it and the part after. Two copies land at the same moment, encrypted, one on Bertrand's private device and one on mine. The email is from Marcus Hale with no subject line and no message body, just an attachment sitting on the screen with the quiet weight of a document that has been prepared by a man who has been trained not to write anything he does not want read out loud in a courtroom one day.Bertrand is in the chair opposite my desk. He has been there since his phone call with Liam, and he has not spoken. He has been on his own phone quietly running the calls he said he would run, arranging the security firm, verifying the driver Adèle put at the building, moving through the professional response the way he always moves, which is thoroughly and without noise.I have been sitting behind my desk with my hands folded in front of me

  • I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets   CHAPTER FIFTY: The Call

Liam's POV The text arrives at eight fifty-three.I am at the desk in the suite reading a document Marcus sent me overnight, and my phone lights up on the wood beside me, and I glance at it and I stop reading. The number on the screen is not saved to my phone. But the number is one I know.I have known it for over three years. I have not called it in three years. I have not been contacted from it in three years. I have not restricted it in three years, and I have never once, in all of that time, seen it light up on my screen with a message attached to it.I pick up the phone.I open the message.Marcus is going to call you within the hour. Take the call, no matter where you are or what you are doing.I read it twice.I read it a third time.I do not respond. I do not reach for the dial to call her. I do not do any of the things the version of me from three years ago would have done, which would have been to react. I sit at the desk in the suite with her message on my screen and I let

  • I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets   CHAPTER FORTY NINE: The Box

Emma's POV Bertrand is standing in the doorway of my office when I arrive. He does not smile. He does not greet me. He simply steps aside and lets me in and closes the door behind us, and on my desk, in the centre where I usually place my folder, is a small brown box.Plain cardboard, no branding, and no shipping label visible from where I stand. This is the kind of box that costs nothing to buy and reveals nothing about who sent it."Bertrand...""It was delivered to reception at seven forty-two, addressed to you, and marked personal. The courier was from a legitimate service. They confirmed it came from a drop-off point in the eleventh arrondissement, paid in cash, sent by a woman who did not give a name and did not appear on any of their internal cameras because she stood outside the range while she filled out the form and handed it through the window.""Have you opened it?""No. I wanted you here first."I set my coat on the chair by the door.I walk to the desk.I stand behind it
