Chapter 4 Insulted

Author: Y's Starsea
The Quintons' event was held the following evening. As the city's richest family, they invited the aristocratic families in Imperia's elite circle. No one knew exactly why the event was being held, but the guest list alone was enough to make it one of the most sought-after gatherings of the year.

When George saw me, he frowned. "How'd you get in? Slept with another guy?"

I laughed mirthlessly.

The marks on his neck were barely concealed beneath his collar, yet he still had the nerve to accuse me of cheating. Wendy noticed my puffy eyes, and she pulled her collar down to reveal the hickeys on her neck.

"You should know your place, Tiffany. George didn't bring you because this place is out of your league."

In the past, words like that would have sent me running somewhere private to cry for hours. Now I just snickered. "I don't need him to bring me here. He has nothing to do with me."

Leslie immediately stepped forward. "Enough. George hates getting threatened."

I smacked his hand away and stepped forth to confront George. "I canceled the wedding. Let's break up."

George grabbed my hand, and his face fell. "You think you can call that shot? You can't leave me."

A couple in rags barged into the scene, and the wobbling woman slapped me right in front of the guests. She roared, "What are you doing, you ingrate? George helped us get our jobs, and he paid for your brother's tuition. You're going to ruin us!"

The crowd stopped moving and looked at us.

The man beside her, his face deeply lined with age, hurriedly dropped to his knees in front of George. "Please let this slide. Tiffany doesn't know what she's doing."

Someone recognized George and started insulting me. "Is she an idiot? She's making a scene even after she latched on to Mr. George?"

"People who sleep around to wealth always end up like this."

"Wendy looks to be a better match for Mr. George."

I looked at my foster parents coldly and stayed silent.

"See? You can't live without me." George sighed and pretended to be the face of resignation, then he spread his arms. "Stop throwing a tantrum. Come here right now, and I'll forgive you."

I smiled, but there was no warmth in it. I used to tell him about how my foster parents abused me and how I only had to survive with one shirt that winter. Every bit of money I earned had to be hidden, because if they found it, they would take it to buy new shoes for their son.

"No money for tuition? Not our problem!"

"You're costing us money! You should thank us for not killing you!"

"I'll protect you, Tiffany. Will you be my girlfriend?"

I used to think they were my nightmare, while George was my salvation. I was wrong.

Tears burned my eyes. I pointed at him. "You scum! I'd never marry you even if it's the last thing I do!"

"What'd you say, you brat!" My foster mother slapped me, and her husband tried to kick me.

George was stormy. "Don't you get it? You don't get to choose."

At that exact moment, the grand doors of the banquet hall swung open. A powerful voice thundered across the room. "No."

Everyone froze.

"You're the one who doesn't get to choose, you cur."

My breath caught. I knew that voice.

George spun around. The moment he saw who had entered, every trace of colour drained from his face.

A year had gone by. I was in the conference hall, listening to my subordinate's report. "Most of the shares of the Woods, the Zimmers, and the Fosters have been acquired. There are a lot of foreign banks that have partnerships with us. After we gave them a heads up, those families' attempts at asset transfer failed."I smiled. "Well done."After George was sentenced to prison, I did everything I could to kick his family out of the circle. The Fosters fell, and the Woods and the Zimmers that relied on them went bankrupt as well.John, Leslie, and my foster parents tried to plead countless times, but I refused them. They could not even get into the company's elevator.Though he was in prison, George refused to give up. He kept trying to send letters to me for help. I never opened a single one. Every letter went straight into the shredder. As for Wendy, by the time the police found her, she had suffered severe injuries to her hands and was in such poor mental condition that she could

After I hung up on him, George's fury blew up. His expression darkened as he turned to his assistant. "Find out which family the Quintons are marrying her off to!"He simply could not accept that the Tiffany who had always obeyed him would reject his apology. Wendy immediately wrapped both arms around his elbow and pressed herself against him. "Ignore that bitch and go out with me.""Enough."Wendy pouted and pulled her collar lower to show the marks he left on her yesterday. "Why? Don't you like me? You called my name when you rode me yesterday.""Enough!" George flung her hand away. "She'll calm down in a few days, so stop making that kind of joke." It was the first time he felt that Wendy was annoying. He thought, 'She doesn't even have an ounce of Tiffany's gentleness.'Wendy did not expect this total refusal. She fell to the ground and was stunned for a moment, then she laughed. "You think this is a joke? Wait, are you stupid? Only you're still delusional about Tiffany com

Once the troublemakers had been thrown out, the reunion banquet proceeded smoothly. It was also the perfect opportunity for me to establish myself within Imperia's elite circle. Henry and my biological parents personally introduced me to the guests."This is Mrs. Zimmerson. Her daughter's the same age as you."Mrs. Zimmerson happily held my hands. "Tiffany, right? Oh, you're lovely.""And this is Mr. Fawkes. His family are loyal friends, and our partnership has always gone swimmingly.""I think Tiffany has the makings of a great woman!"George called me a lot and bombarded my phone with texts, but I ignored them all. Once the elders were introduced, Henry and my parents took me to another table."This is your peer, David Dresfang, second son of the Dresfangs. He's young, but he's successful.""You flatter me. Your granddaughter is equally brilliant."Henry showed me to nearly everyone, save for those who mocked me. He wanted to get back at them, so they scurried off. He lovingl

"You're here, sir." George quickly recovered from his shock and lowered his head respectfully. The crowd shrank to the sides and made a path. Henry Quinton walked through the hall. His hair was completely white, but his stride was steady and commanding, his presence alone enough to silence the room. "If I hadn't come," he said coldly, "you might have turned my family's banquet into one of your own."George's face nearly fell, but he would not show his displeasure to the richest man in Imperia. My foster parents were humble farmers who had never seen anything like this, and they were stunned.Wendy did not recognize the head of the Quintons, and she said arrogantly, "And who are you supposed to be, old man? Get out! George is the eldest son of the Foster family. Who do you think you are?"The stage was set. I wiped my tears away and watched coldly. Leslie and John quickly pulled her back, but Wendy was used to getting spoiled, she thought the world revolved around her.She appr

A few hours later, I finally cleaned all the grease off me. Right after I came out of the bathroom, I heard John speaking outside the door. "You worked well together for the couple's event."Leslie teased, "Wendy's the better girl for you, George. You guys grew up together and slept in the same bed lots of times. Can't you get married for real?""Enough," George said casually. "We only ever slept beside each other. Nothing happened."Wendy said bashfully, "Nonsense. We kissed."That was it. I pushed the door open and demanded an answer from George. "You said you'd love me forever. This is how you love people?"I scrolled through my phone right in front of him, showing him all the intimate photos in the group. He was holding Wendy while they were touring around in a car, and they were seated close to each other. There were photos where they shared a cotton candy, and their lips nearly touched. I sneered. "If you liked her, you could've just told me. You didn't have to keep pre
