Chapter 2

Author: Make maney
The only people I told about leaving were my parents.

I expected a lecture. Instead, they both supported me.

"Nova, go do whatever you want to do. And remember, you can always count on us."

After that call, I felt calm.

I looked around the place, then went to the bedroom and started packing.

The house wasn't mine. Charles had bought it after he made captain.

He said he wanted to give me a real home.

I was so happy I spent every dollar I had furnishing it.

He didn't like anything I picked. He replaced it all with Mediterranean-style decor and even had our bedroom walls painted pink.

I asked him why he'd chosen that color. He lay on the bed with a somber look in his eyes.

"I want you to stay a young girl forever."

It wasn't until I saw what Vivian was wearing in those photos that I understood.

Pink was her favorite. The Mediterranean decor was about the two of them, too.

I was packing my suitcase when I looked up and saw our wedding photo on the wall.

I'd been beaming that day, but Charles's expression had been tense and unsmiling.

The photographer had to remind him several times, "Sir, you have to smile. You can't look this serious in a wedding photo."

Charles tried to cooperate, but the best he could manage was a stiff smile.

I covered for him.

"He's a captain. This is just how he is."

Only after I found those other photos did I understand. A job doesn't change who someone is.

He hadn't been able to smile that day. Maybe the problem was who stood next to him.

I took the photo off the wall and cut my half out of it.

I used to believe the Moon Goddess had destined us for each other, that ours was the deepest bond.

Now I finally understood. She had given us a mate bond, not love.

My phone chimed with a WhatsApp message from Charles.

"Made it to the hotel. About to turn in. Did you eat?"

I sent back a single word. "Yeah."

The old me would have asked for photos of the hotel and descriptions of the city and scenery around him. I'd wanted to know everything about his life. Even if I couldn't go with him, I'd wanted to feel as though we'd seen those places together.

Ten minutes later, another message came in, this one about the hotel.

"This place is nice. Dinner's a buffet. They have that cod you like."

I didn't answer. He sent another one.

"It's pretty cold here. Did you pack any extra clothes for me?"

Again, I answered with one word.

"No."

It hit me then. When you stop caring about someone, your replies really do get that short. Just like his replies to me had always been.

The funny part was that today he had plenty to say.

I had a new notification on Instagram.

I opened it. Vivian had posted.

Her nighttime photo of the water showed a brightly lit hotel nearby. It was the same hotel Charles had just messaged me about.

The caption said:

"Moonlight on the harbor, me in your arms. This moment is ours, my darling captain."

People had liked the post.

Then I saw her reply.

"Thank you all for the love."

I could feel how happy she was right through the screen.

It just wasn't my happiness.

I locked the screen and closed my eyes. A wave of happiness washed over me.

It wasn't mine. It was his, flowing through the mate bond.

I used to be so stupid about it. Every time I felt that, I told myself he just loved his work, loved the ocean.

I was actually thrilled that I got to feel what he felt.

It never occurred to me that I only ever felt it when he was away from me, out on the water.

Or that another woman was the one making him happy.

A few mornings later, Charles pushed open the bedroom door, bringing the cold in with him.

I opened my eyes. He pressed a quick, half-hearted kiss to my forehead and handed me a fancy gift bag.

"A present for you."

The old me would have been moved to tears. Now I just glanced at it without interest.

"How much did it cost?"

He rubbed his nose, looking guilty.

"Not much. I'm no good at picking these things. I don't know if you'll even like the pin."

I pushed the bag a little farther away.

"I don't want the freebie that came with Vivian's necklace."

Charles's expression turned cold.

"What do you know?"

I picked up my phone and waved it at him.

"I saw her post."

His expression relaxed.

"I thought the pin would suit you, so I asked her for it. And now it's not good enough for you?"

I looked him straight in the eye.

"It was a free gift with someone else's purchase. Why should I want it? Or do you think I only deserve things other people don't want?"

"That's enough, Nova!"

Charles's voice rose.

"What are you throwing a fit about?

"You used to complain that I never brought you anything. Now I bring you something and you're still unhappy. What do you actually want from me?

"I'm exhausted. I don't have the energy to sweet-talk you right now!"

I nodded.

"Then go sweet-talk someone else. I don't need it."

I pointed at the door.

"I'm going to sleep. Please get out."

My father poured me a glass of red wine."It's over now. You're yourself again. It's time to go out and clear your head."If you don't want to go alone, I can send the finest wolf we have with you."I turned him down. "Dad, I want to see the Alps, the shores of Lake Baikal, and the Coral Sea. I want to go alone and experience the world's most beautiful landscapes."And that's what I did.I saw the most beautiful clouds from a plane window, felt the warmest sea breeze on a ship's deck, and climbed to the tops of the highest peaks.I shifted and ran through the jungle, surrounded by the humid heat of the rainforest. It felt as if I'd returned to the earliest days of our kind. The last I ever heard about Charles came from my father. He'd suffered several times more than I had. Maybe it hurt me less because I'd let go earlier. His sight came back, but he still shifted without warning. He frightened a human child on board, and somebody filed a complaint.Vivian had already found herself ano

I turned my back on him."This is my home, and I'm not going anywhere. You're the one who's leaving. Go far away, and don't come back. I never want to see you again."I went inside and shut the door. Charles stood outside it the entire night. It was chilly when I went out the next morning. Charles was shivering but still refused to leave."Nova, we can't just separate like this."Severing a mate bond would put us both through terrible pain. We could lose our wolves. It's dangerous."He tried to move toward me on stiff legs, but one disgusted look from me stopped him in his tracks."Instead of putting us both through that, give me the chance to make up for what I did."Nova, I know I was wrong. I promise we'll be happy from now on!"I scoffed."Could it possibly hurt more than staying with you?"I'll endure any amount of pain if it means I'm free of you."Charles stared at me as if my words had struck him. Then my father came out."You have Alpha blood. You know that with the Alpha King

(Nova’s POV)When my father finished playing the footage of Charles, I was perfectly calm. It was like watching a movie about people I didn't know."Tell me what you're thinking, Nova."My father watched me, his face serious."Do you still want to be with him?"I shook my head."I haven't wanted that for a long time. If you hadn't shown me any of this, I'd have almost forgotten he existed. I left to cut every last tie between us."I looked out at the water and smiled."Because I've realized I can do all of this without him. I can enjoy the ocean as much as I want without seeing it through his eyes."My father nodded and pointed toward the door."Then you have my consent to end the bond. Would you like me to throw him out for you?"I looked outside. Charles stood there with the wind tugging at his coat, making him look even more worn down.He was crying and laughing at the same time."Nova, I came to take you home."I didn't even know how to respond. Just listening to him was exhausting

The realization hit Charles like a blow.He remembered. When the smart lock was installed, the skin on Nova's fingers had been peeling because of the change in seasons. The scanner couldn't read her fingerprint. He'd told her to use a key until her fingers healed. They could register her fingerprint then. He hadn't given her the code, either. Then he'd forgotten all about it.For years, Nova had carried that heavy ring of keys, while he'd handed Vivian the code without a second thought. He pounded his fist against the floor and roared, "Get out! Get out of here, get out of my house!"Vivian jumped back."Charles, what's gotten into you?""I said get out. This is not your home, and I don't want to see you here again!"Tears spilled down her face. He'd never spoken to her like that. He had always been gentle with her."Charles, why are you yelling at me?"You're the one who insisted on registering my fingerprint. Nova was standing right there. You laughed at her for not taking care of he

When he stopped howling, Charles hauled Daniel off his feet."My wife leaves, and you don't tell me!"Daniel went pale and managed to speak. "You're the one who said I didn't need to report anything about Mrs. Hale to you anymore..."Charles's face froze. It was true. After Nova refused to apologize to Vivian, he had been furious. On his way out, he'd given Daniel an order. "That woman is impossible. She can't keep sulking forever. From now on, don't tell me anything about her. I don't want to know!"That was how he'd been able to take Vivian to the Caribbean without a care. How he'd brought her aboard a ship he'd never once taken Nova on.Charles let go. Daniel coughed several times, then spoke carefully. "I thought Mrs. Hale had gone to meet you. Didn't you say you were taking her on the Caribbean run?"The words cut straight through him.Right. Except the offer had only ever been a way to make Nova give in to Vivian. The spot beside him on that deck had never been meant for Nova.No

  • I Left My Cheating Mate, He Begged for Forgiveness   Chapter 6

(Third person’s POV)The day Nova left, Charles and Vivian checked into the most luxurious hotel in Mexico. He took a photo of the room, opened his WhatsApp chat with Nova, and tapped send.Only one gray check mark appeared. The photo hadn't been delivered. Nova had blocked him."Huh?"Charles frowned at the screen and figured the signal was bad.He walked around the room and tried sending the photo again and again. Each attempt showed the same single check mark.Vivian came over in a bathrobe, towel-drying her hair."Charles, why are you still on your phone? You promised we'd go out and enjoy the sea breeze tonight."Charles set his phone facedown and murmured a distracted yes.He wasn't especially worried. He assumed Nova had blocked him because she was still angry.Still, something about it didn't sit right with him. After all, in ten years, no matter how bad their fights got, Nova had always been the first to apologize. She had never cut him off before. He thought all it took to ma
